New old games in the J! Archive

I was able to get that 11/8/96 episode a few years back by finding Sasha Volokh on Facebook and writing him about it. Unfortunately on the tape I got from him, the intro and first nine clues were missing. It also had the introduced and first round of that nights Wheel of Fortune so probably someone must have set a timer to record it but the time was probably off 2 or 3 minutes. Anyways, I'm glad Mark uploaded the intro to that episode so I can see what Alex said since my copy is missing it.

I put in a few games from S20 last week if anyone wants to see them. I got in the first two games of 2004 along with Christmas 2003. I think I also have all the QF games from the College Tournament. I'll copy and paste more as time allows.

S13 is closing in on 200 games archived.

I have at least one other (alas, partial) unarchived game from April 12, 1988. Returning champ Bob Beers loses his Game 4 to Ron Kerr/Carr. I've got from the second half of SJ on. The source for this is a torrent I downloaded a while back called Jeopardy Megapack Yellow. It's got lots of junk that I'm just now sifting through. If you guys are familiar with the torrent and have everything from it, I won't mention anything else I find.

Well that is an interesting little file, isn't it? Based on the file names, it's a collection of games that are or were uploaded to YouTube. And I've found reference to similarly named "White" and "Indigo" files, as well as one with no color in the name at all.

Best guesses on the names. I went with Craig and Carr. You got better guesses or reasons, let me know. The names are too common to get a good Google on.

The Yellow pack is the only one I ever succeeded in getting downloads from. I also have the White, Indigo, and Green. There's been no action on the Green and Indigo and I've had them for years. I must've got a nibble on the White at some point because six of the files are partially downloaded. (The most complete one is only at 23.4%, so they're not much use.) I wasn't aware of the pack with no color.

The Yellow pack isn't the goldmine one might have hoped. I've gone through the whole thing now. That partial episode with Bob Beers is the best find. There's also, as I mentioned, the "minisode" of Keith Williams' game 2 final on November 21, 2003. You said you could get the whole thing from Ronnie's archive. But does her archive include images? The FJ for that episode relies on two images and can't be responded to (intelligently) without them.

Was he really described as a card counter?

He almost certainly wasn't introduced that way, but that's what we know about him. The video starts at the interview portion. When it's Ron's turn, Alex says, "You earned a living for a little while, I understand, at the casinos. Tell me about that."

Ron responds by saying, "That's right. I was a card counter. I was a professional blackjack player." And that's the only part of his life we learn about. Alex asks if he ever got caught and he says yes. He also says he used disguises. So unless he's a very foolish man, card counting is not his occupation at that point, nor does he plan to return to it.

As much as I hope to see the rest of these games filled into the Archive, it just now came to my mind that although the games from Ronnie's site had the scores at the first break, it doesn't show after what clue # the show took the break. Even though it's almost always after clue #15 that the show takes it's break, sometimes it can be give-or-take two of clue #15. That and the possibility that the last clue could've been a triple stumper when no one rang in. So that part of filling in the games is gonna be a bit tricky for those episodes that ended that way before the show's first break.

When I put in the 1/1/2004 game and checked the scores after clue #15, Micah had $600n less than Ronnie gave him credit for. The 16th clue was worth $600 and Micah got it right. I checked with Mark and he didn't have that game in his collection. So I went ahead and made the break after the 16th clue to make it work out.

There were also a couple other incidents where the scores were off by one clue and I had to check with Mark to see what was right.

Ronnie also doesn't have exactly what the players wrote down in FJ. One of the game I put in asked for one of a list of three and again I had to consult a higher power to see what they wrote.

So Ronnie's archive isn't exactly what we are used to. Anyone putting in games from that source needs to pay close attention. Luckily nobody did the Forest bounce in any of the ones I've done so far.

My tape did not have the FJ! round. I had my first opportunity to use the recently collected FJ! clues and took the category and wording from there. My scoresheet had the player wagers and results, so everything is accurate other than exactly how the players wrote the FJ! responses.

For S20 and the number of clues at the first break I'll look into listing that number (and while doing that checking the first break scores as well) for the games from that season not in the Archive yet. I have no way of knowing for the games that are already in there which ones come from video sources (so likely accurate) and which ones were lifted directed from Ronnie's archive other than the few Bamaman had me check.
