The J! round Daily Double, THE '50s for $400, is a TV theme song that is very obscure in 2017. If you rip the archive to make flashcards, you can probably skip that one. Well done if you know it. I did not.
Not quite an instant recognition, but got it within the think music time. Didn't remember the exact words, but the rhyme scheme and scansion gave me the melody which gave me the show.

"...., brave, courageous and bold.
Long live his fame, and long live his glory,
and long may his story be told."

Of course, at the time it was on I had a cap gun in black holster with a chess knight on it (Paladin was one of my many heroes), and wore a Roy Rogers vest with it when playing in the back yard. Would have been happy to grow up to be Hugh O'Brien. "1950s and '60s TV Western Themes" would be a wheelhouse category for me.

Courtesy of Pannoni, we have the October 25, 1985 game. Al Lusher vs. Faye Ringel vs. Mark Leinwand. As he puts it, it's the Back to the Future episode.

http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5604

Now this, my friends, is an interesting game. It's game 2 for ToCer Mark Leinwand, but he might be the 3rd most interesting player in the game. At podium 3 we have Al (Alan) Lusher, the all-time winner on the '70s Alex Trebek game show Double Dare. (No mention is made of that fact) But it's player 2 I'm most interested in. I had to Google to try to figure out her name, and it turns out that Coast Guard Academy professor Faye Ringel was a semi-finalist in the 1974 Art Fleming Jeopardy Tournament of Champions! They didn't mention that either, but I wish they had. I can confirm it's the same person thank to an Instagram pic I can't link to at work. (Thanks, Matthew Heim, whoever you are!)

So, quick rundown.

Daily Double hunting strategy would be a lot different today if they still had an Audio Daily Double in every game. The players stayed away from DANCE SONGS for way too long.

Gonna give the Clues of the Game award to HATS for $400 and $500:
$400: Unlike the haberdasher, this person makes women's hats

$500: Lacy headgear worn by the ladies of Spain
Spoiler
$400: What is a milliner?
$500: What is the mantilla?
Those are both Things Worth Knowing.

2 consecutive games I've entered with THE '50s as a category. I'm pretty sure they used the same category title slide both times. It's got a weird-looking "s" on it.

LABOR UNIONS for $200 (DJ!) is no longer accurate. The number is now closer to 11%.

I was sure that SOUTH CAROLINA for $1000 was going to be a stumper, but congrats to Faye for getting it.
For over 25 years he published a unique newspaper, "The Carolina Israelite" in Charlotte
Spoiler
Who is Harry Golden?
I'm guessing fewer than 5 contestants this whole season could get that one right today. I'd never heard of him, but he sounds interesting.

In the previous game I entered, Paula Tupper failed to spell out the acronym ASCAP for a Daily Double, but this time around Mark Leinwand managed to get AFTRA for a DD. I always mix those 2 up.

In Inside Jeopardy, Harry Eisenberg notes that the quiz show scandals were a verboten topic under Merv Griffin's watch, but THE '50s for $400 (DJ!) was apparently written before that rule went into effect.

And poor Al muffed it in FJ, forgetting to phrase his (correct) response as a question. Fortunately it did not effect the outcome of the game on a triple get with big wagers. In the J! round, he also responded without ringing in, so Faye got the points.

This was a well-played game with some good, tough clues. Worth tracking down on Daily Motion if you have 20 minutes to kill. Have a good night all.

Between J!'s tendency at the time to activate the Go lights a little bit after the ends of clues, the players' demonstrative buzzing techniques, and their shared strength on the material, there are a lot of buzzer races to see in that game. It's pretty cool to watch, actually.

It's not every regular play episode of J! that has all three players all sporting previous game show success on their resume. The third place prize was Arthur Murray dance lessons. :)

Thanks for getting the game in the Archive.

Ivoryface86 wrote: Thu Mar 30, 2017 7:08 pm Hey Mark, I nearly wondering, that since shaving off his trademark mustache, the runner-up prizes became runner-up trips, for instance, a trip to Boston that was once a 2nd place prize became a trip for a 3rd place finisher while the 2nd place finisher got a trip outside of North America, such as a trip to Jamaica or a Costa Rica trip. I wonder if you can include the actual runner-up trips for the January 18 and 29, 2002 shows and do you have the January 31, 2002 episode in your collection that included the runner-up trips from the original or previous season broadcast or is your copy from GSN(which you don't know what the trips were until they're listed in the credits)? Oh yeah, can somebody also list the runner-up trips from the April 18 and 25, 2002 episodes while we're in the subject? Thanks.
My source for 1/18 and 1/29 was not my collection and the recording had no commercials including the spot for announcing the trips. I cannot help with those missing. For the Archive I marked 2nd and 3rd place slots "unknown" since I knew leaving it blank would cause the prize patrol to lose their minds.

I checked and I have my own copy of 1/31/02 complete with the prizes, so I can input that game in April sometime.

I'll check another time to see about 4/18 and 4/25.
I have filled in 1/31/02 and the links are good: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=1388

Of course it had to be a game with over 10W. Let me know what else to capitalize in the FJ! clue and I'll change it.
**************

4/18 & 4/25 trips (whatever that proves with the games not even filled in yet)

4/18 2nd: Zermont, Switzerland stay at Schweitzerhoff by Collette Vacations (I don't care enough to look up proper spellings)
3rd: Dallas, TX Wyndham Anatole Hotel

4/25 2nd: Palm Island in Grenadines
3rd: San Francisco by Yahoo! Travel

I'll try to get one more S18 game done this week sometime.

Since I had the tape cued up to it anyway I filled in 4/18/02: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=1746

More fancy food for you, Hammer.

CLICHES IN OTHER WORDS needed to be escorted to the rear of the farm building and fired upon.

Very strange stat line with 52R and 10W.

It's been 13 years and Ben may still think about the multiple ways he lost a chance to make the TOC.

For a game entry in May I call dibs on 4/25/02 since I have that one cued up as well.

The FJ wagers were Amy risked $2,000, Ben risked $6,801 and Kevin risked $9,401.

They didn't bet $0, though, according to the Archive (before Mark changed it all), they bet $.

From February 14, 1986, it's Dan Green's 4th game, against Ben Harris and an entertainment lawyer named Jared. From Panonni, the audio on this game is, unfortunately, very low. If any of you eagle ears want to make out what you can of the two challengers, please be my guest.

And it really is too bad the audio is low, because this is, I'd say, a quintessential season 2 Jeopardy game. From TRIVIA as a round 1 category, to the goofing over MILLARD FILLMORE in round 2, this is as entertaining as Jeopardy gets. The game material's got the quirks of those early games too; just about every clue in the game feels like it's straight out of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader. This is the show I loved as a kid. And it's an exciting game to boot.

To save correction suggesters' time, yes ROARING '20S was spelled with a capital "S", and "light saber" in LIGHT for $200 (DJ!) was 2 words. Additionally, I took transcribing the clues exactly to its logical conclusion, and left out the space in LIGHT for $800, just like the game board had it.

If I hadn't read Prisoner of Trebekistan, I might have taken the neg-bait in MILLARD FILLMORE for $200.

How mad would you as a sports fan be to hit that bizarre SPORTS HISTORY category in DJ!?

Game show nerds, note the Bob Barker shout-out in AWARDS for $200 (DJ!).

Harry Eisenberg mentioned in Inside Jeopardy that sometimes they'd track down older, out-of-copyright music for Audio Daily Doubles, which I expect explains the instrumental track used for ROARING '20S for $400. Even quoting a lyric in the clue didn't help Dan get that one.

One Daily Double in MONTANA went unplayed.

Hit the video at about 18 minutes to watch the video toaster onscreen effect malfunction going into Final Jeopardy.

And clue of the game is MOVIE ANIMALS for $500:
In 1973, James Franciscus was the voice of this animal
Spoiler
Who is Jonathan Livingston Seagull?
My hat's off to you if you knew that. And like last time, you can probably leave that one out of your flashcards.

More later, maybe? We'll see.

I hear Jared Gross or Groce.

There is a practicing lawyer named Jared Gross in California; it says he was admitted to the bar at the end of 1986. Johnny's intro says something before "entertainment lawyer," and I think it could be "aspiring," which would make sense for him at the beginning of 1986. The only other question is whether the guy with a mustache and without glasses looks like the guy without the mustache and with glasses.

So even with the dating issues we have, I went ahead and entered Frank Hughes game 4, vs. Dan Schaffer vs. Pat Rounds, from some time in December of 1986.

Not much to say about this one, I guess. Pat was having a hard time of it, and an unfortunate guess at NORTH DAKOTA for $1000 put her in the negative for good. Had she not done that, she could still have pulled out the win with a correct Final Jeopardy.

That North Dakota clue is a Thing Worth Knowing, by the way:
U. of N.D. alumnus & Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "What Price Glory" & "Winterset"
Spoiler
Who is Maxwell Anderson? Winterset is a play based on Sacco and Vanzetti; you should know that too.
Funny ending to the Jeopardy! round that looked a bit like a mercy killing. I'm guessing Standards and Practices wouldn't have allowed them to actually end it like that, though.

Check out the correct response to FAMOUS PAIRS for $400 (J!). That's exactly how Alex read it. Bravo if you knew his first name was
Spoiler
John.
Typo alert: the display had "1930's" in the FASHION HISTORY for $200 (DJ!) clue, with the apostrophe. That's how I prefer to write it, but I guess it's not technically "correct".

Clue of the game will be MAGAZINE COVERS for $500. No spoilers here in the thread, please, because it's time for another Does Mark Barrett Remember the '80s? Challenge! Can he work out the correct response to this DD clue? (For that matter, can you?):
In July 1986, "she" was on the front of Time & Newsweek, but TV Guide only gave her its backside
Click through the game link above to see if you got it right. (Again, no spoilers here.) And if you got it in the 15 seconds or so of DD thinking time, so much the better.

Have a good night everyone.
