Well, I was going to finish this one yesterday, but then I noticed the date, so I put it off. From exactly 17 years ago, March 14, 2002, we have Claire Williams vs. Mary Mansfield vs. Hanley Baxter. From my own tape even! A random game that just managed to survive being taped over somehow.

I was rooting for Mary in the WHO'S THE MRS.? category. She had the rare "sweep playing up the board" going from the $2000 clue. Alas, Claire got in with the $400 clue, breaking up the shutout.

Alex made a big deal about the players all missing FJ, saying they needed to keep up with films if they were going to win at Jeopardy. But you could have seen the film, and easily not gotten the clue right. It has nothing to do with the movie!

I might have gotten it with a hint that it was animated. As written I couldn't get my brain to budge from live action movies.

Is there any way to "tackle" a clue like this?

I think one can reasonably expect it to be a title character, although I admit that's 20/20 hindsight and you'd have to be pretty brave to make such an assumption on the spot. I imagine it would have been easier to come up with a movie title that was just one weird word. (I'll spare you the "sounds like [language]" assessment since you don't like those.) It is a tough clue. I got it off Myron's post only because I'd previously heard that the name was from Yiddish; I probably didn't know that when this clue was current.

•I had thought that this clue was mentioned in Harry Eisenberg's book, but 15 minutes of browsing couldn't find it. I thought he said that he called CIA headquarters to confirm the clue, and then waited what he assumed was the length of time for a background check before they called back. Maybe it was The Jeopardy Book instead.

And the next game was actually an easy choice, Jeff Richmond game 4 to finish his run, December 28, 1988, vs Carol Bunch and Tom Leckey.

Interesting note. These last two games have included the slate at the beginning of the tape, so I know that in addition to being absolutely sure of the airdate and show number, this is also game G 5087 (Yesterday's game was G 5086.) What that means is, it's the 87th game assembled for use in season 5, and that's the material that standards and practices picked for this taping. I learned that while flipping through "Inside Jeopardy" yesterday, trying to find that CIA anecdote.

FAMOUS QUOTES for $800 gave Alex an entire clue to do his "Robby Burns" voice.

FJ was hard, congrats to Tom and Jeff for getting it. Tom had a pretty good run at the end there, finding both DJ DDs. Slightly more aggressive wagering and Jeff's Jeopardy! career might have looked a whole lot different.

Oops, good point. 2nd did not bet to keep 3rd locked out, so the "Shoretegic" wager from first would indeed have lost her the game on a triple get. That is pretty much the omnipresent danger of a wager like that, making the assumption that 2nd will bet strategically is fraught with peril!
