Grubstake I got, but the FJ was just awful. Just answered Smithsonian, I don't keep track of their submuseums and I doubt most people do.
Numerical titles was a disaster. Misunderstood the first clue, thought they wanted 5 digits, so went with the obvious 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. OTOH, I liked what little of the Pig Latin category I saw and probably would've been some easy trash.

Tough game to watch. 7/8 clues went unrevealed. I got FJ but I did think the Met first but then I thought DC might have more museum visitors. As for the silly story about going to Ireland & not liking potatoes, I'll refrain from comment..

This, for me,... almost.
The only significant thing happening the last couple years I could think of that people may want to "touch" was the demise of NASA's Shuttle/Orbiter program, so my guess was... "NASA's Space Museum."? Just totally blanked on the Smithsonian National Air and Space because after all, why should I remember that? It's not like it has anything cool, like the Enterprise or anything.
Gotta tell you though, even had I thought of it? I'd've assumed it was a ridiculously long shot.

I got to Air & Space Museum pretty quickly by figuring that it's the Smithsonian museum with the most unique, yet universal appeal -- international tourists may not be as interested in American history, and there are natural history museums everywhere. I also thought that the visitors to Udvar-Hazy out at Dulles would be included, since it's officially a part of the museum.

Of course, I grew up in the DC area and that one always seemed to be the most crowded. I remember it being so packed my first time that I could barely see anything even in the gift shop.

Austin Powers wrote:The reason why FJ is so terrible is actually pretty simple. First of all, the National Air and Space Museum is USUALLY the most visited museum in the country. I did a little Google search afterward and that seems to confirm it. However, it's not always the most visited - some times the Museum of Natural History will slip ahead. But, still, usually. Maybe even in 2008 and 2009, too.
In that case I don't feel too bad about my response of "Museum of Natural History."

Rotten FJ clue. It really was pure trivia - no TOM and not common knowledge or any good way to reason it out.

In addition to the problems others have mentioned, the judges could have had a mess on their hands if someone had given an irregular answer. There are all kinds of museums and no standard definition of what counts as a museum or a visitor. And lots of attractions don't even record the number of visitors - people just freely walk up and view the exhibits. In all likelihood the museum that gets the most visitors is a small or informal one located in a busy place that a lot of people pass through, like an airport. For example, the Phoenix airport has a museum and the exhibits are spread throughout the terminals and other facilities. There are also museums in the San Francisco Airport, and O'Hare. Just to give a few examples. To avoid vagueness, the clue should have included some kind of qualifier that made clear they were talking about a highly-rated museum or a museum in the Smithsonian, or an American Association of Museums member or something like that.

I'm annoyed at the contestants for avoiding Pig Latin Latin...sounded like fun, and couldn't have been harder than the clues we saw...I'm annoyed at Alex for his "It's the Space Age!" as if the clue was self-evident. (Didn't the Space Age just end?) I'm annoyed at the writers for not just a TOMless FJ! ("Holocaust Museum", I said, not so likely, but it was the most recently opened major museum I could think of...my second choice would have been Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.) but "grubstake" - I said just 'stake" - and that Carl Sagan clue...I'm annoyed at the judges for not caring that Patti Smith played at CBGB, not CBGB's. The name stands for Country Bluegrass Blues...
I'm not usually so annoyed!

I sure hope Jeopardy! hasn't jumped the shark.

I actually knew final based on something I read off the cap from a Snapple bottle or something. I'm sure the writers were just randomly skipping to pages of the World Almanac and grabbing facts. Perhaps the expectation is that everything in there is fair game?

Reminds me of all the people around here who say they're going to Kmart's, Walmart's or (further south) Kroger's.

Despite every single diesel pump I've seen being yellow (I've filled up in the US before, but not nearly as many times as I've filled up here, so I may just have forgotten the colour of American diesel pump handles) I blurted out "diesel" too, then said "no, stupid, they're yellow, "green" is probably "biofuel" of some kind, but since diesel was the first thing out of my mouth I have to take it." Pleasantly surprised on reveal.

To hell with YouTube, we need to find a way to add that to the Archive of that game somehow!
ACW wrote:How can you hate potatoes??? :o
Mary, if you're reading this, there is someone else out there. Potatoes of all kinds upset my stomach, if I have any, it's usually just a nibble. (Up until watching today's program, I thought I was the only one in the world who *can* eat "just one Lays"!) This doesn't mean I *hate* them, though, I love perogies and scalloped potatoes especially, I just pay the price for it later (I made the mistake of mentioning the potato thing to my wife early in our relationship, so she usually keeps me from eating enough (ie more than 1 or 2 perogies or slices of scalloped potatoes) to get sick. To others (including our kids), I just use the shorthand in saying I'm "allergic" to potatoes to save me having to recap the long story, it works in a pinch.

Nit, it's either Göring or Goering (the latter is preferred in English), Goring is what you don't want Pamplona bulls to do to you.

(And I've always considered the #2 man in the Third Reich as Goebbels, but I know that he committed suicide the day after Hitler did (he was technically Chancellor of Germany for that day, but I don't think he knew) so anything having to do with post WWII excludes him.
TenPoundHammer wrote:As I said, the clue might as well have been "Name a museum". Only some factoid about said museum that apparently isn't even that good a gauge of its notability and literally nothing else to go on.
I agree, essentially no TOM there, and that is the essence of what makes a bad clue.

By "She could've been Mrs. Whomever twice", I thought it meant she married someone else whose last name was the same as Burton's real name.
Despite knowing her being married to Burton twice, with the way the clue was worded that's what I thought it was going for too!

(Agreeing with TPH twice in one post? That's gotta be a record!)

Glad someone shared my confusion on diesel. Not sure either why electricity would prompt a parade.

Is a coil the same as a spring?

I've put both clips on my blog, if that helps.
I too said "20000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Holocaust Museum." I got "electricity" because of the "Main Street Electrical Parade" at Disneyland.

And if you're only going to one one of the Air & Space buildings, go to that one! For me it was an instaget FJ and I was surprised about all the grousing. Granted, I was just there in 2010 (both the one on the Mall and the Udvar-Hazy .. did I mention the Udvar-Hazy is sooooo much better? :) ).

For the Jules Verne clue, I said What is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, thinking 5 referred to the number of words in the title. Judges?

Also, I heard Evan mutter something midway through the DJ round. It sounded something like, "God, we're terrible.", but I'd be curious to find out what it was.

I didn't get that "parade" ref either. I also think that submarine clue was kind of odd, since the diesels acctually make electricity, which then powers the sub.

If the Udvar Hazy (spelling right this time?) Center counts, then why not just call the Smithsonian one big museum (the "nation's attic" and all)? I mean at least those museums are next door to each other. Heck at least the question last week had information that uniquely required the answer being the Peace Prize.

This is feeling more and more like one of those pub trivia questions that everyone goes up to the host to complain about. Usually the host resorts to saying "well that's not on my answer sheet so sorry."

An FJ with no TOM, a clue ("parade") with a very obscure TOM, and a category ("numerical") with no explanation to what the clues mean - the trifecta as to what makes bad writing.

To be perfectly honest, I was watching the whole "the clues lately have been written so badly!" comments with bemusement, but I think these things right here have turned me into a believer, something's different, lately. (How long has it been since Alex was participating in the Writer's Table, like I've seen him do in various "Behind the Scenes at Jeopardy!" videos?)
