He was, IMHO, the best writer on baseball ever ("The Summer Game", e.g.), and he wrote two superb memoirs: "This Old Man" and "Let Me Finish". Highly recommended. Not too likely to show up on J! but he might, and the obit is very well done (I'm sure it's been in the can for a long time).

Angell was an artist with words, and his love for baseball was boundless.
Was he the one who wrote the annual Christmas poem in the New Yorker?
Yes, he did it for many years (originated it, I think) and only gave it up a few years ago when he was in his 90s. I'll be shocked if the New Yorker doesn't do some kind of a retrospective soon.

When I saw he had died, I knew someone would post it on this thread, and I had to come here and look.

Just like when I heard the bulletin that John Paul II had died, I had to look at Wikipedia, and someone had already made the edit.

So JBoard is where Wikipedia was 17 years ago.

Does that mean that Wikipedia is where Wikipedia was 17 years ago?

Music chart indexer Joel Whitburn, 82

https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-b ... 235087319/

He had one of the largest private record collections in the country. Nearly everyone who studies popular music uses his books one way or another. I lost interest after one of his books was exposed as an academic fraud.

R.I.P.

My Whitburns have been indispensable possessions for decades.

But odd that I always had trouble remembering his name, and would invariably come up with "Halliwell"...... Halliwell actually being the long time author of film guides.

Now I'm curious: which books were exposed as frauds?

I've owned three consecutive printings of his Hot Country Songs books and actually noticed him correcting errors between editions. In fact, a few of them were errors I personally contacted Record Research and asked that they correct in future editions.

He used questionable methodology for the listings and charts in “Pop Memories”: https://timbrooks.net/wp/review-whitbur ... ries-1987/

As far as I can tell, most of his other books are fine (that is, the ones that include data from after the Billboard charts got a lot more straightforward circa the mid-1950s).

Yes, that is the one I meant. Also, the way he handled his charts from 1955 to 1958 adulterates the charts as published. And it has the effect of inflating the ranking of records of that era.

Hall of Fame NFL running back Hugh McElhenny died recently of natural causes at his home in Nevada. He was 93.

Nicknamed “The King,” McElhenny spent 13 years in the league, including nine seasons with the 49ers. McElhenny landed in six Pro Bowls — five with the Niners and one with the Vikings. He was part of the “Million Dollar Backfield” in the mid-1950s with quarterback Y.A. Tittle and running backs Joe “The Jet” Perry and John Henry Johnson.

He also played one season each with the Lions and the Giants.

And another former NFL player death: defensive tackle Tony "Goose" Siragusa, age 55, who played for the Colts and the Ravens from 1990 to 2001, then went on to a broadcasting career.
