Alan Ladd Jr., Who Greenlit 'Star Wars' and Produced 'Braveheart,' Dies at 84

As far as I can tell from the archive, Alan Ladd Jr has never been mentioned on J!. However, his father makes twenty appearances in the archive, having starred in Shane, This Gun for Hire, and dozens of other films from the Golden Age of Hollywood. On the other hand, the son won an Oscar, an achievement that eluded his more famous father.

I almost posted the exact same post earlier, but refrained because Laddie (as he was known) had no Archive hits. He deserves J! recognition, though, not only for being the only executive to buy and subsequently greenlight Star wars, when other studios had passed, but to be the one to defend the production from threatened studio shutdown on repeated occasions. In one oft-related story, he angrily stood up at a table of 20th Century Fox execs who wanted to cut off money to Lucas's movie, announced that Star Wars was going to be the best movie the studio had ever made, and ended discussion.

He left the show in a dispute with the producers and the character was never seen or mentioned again. Didn’t even come to his brothers or father’s weddings.

The show switched from black and white to color when he left and the early episodes (which also had William Frawley) weren’t shown much in syndication.
