Brittany was shut out in the first segment and it only got worse from there.
Without a Disneyland hint there was no way I solve that FJ! clue as it was not for me.
Amy's numbers were fantastic today.
Amy's homework for the ToC? If a clue gives you a year when only one person was president then you should know the name.

Today's FJ!, linking the 1890s with the disappearance of the correct response region, seemed more than a little familiar to me. I don't know whether it was just the FJ! from show #4634, aired 2004-10-28 (HISTORIC AREAS: In 1893, as it was disappearing, F.J. Turner wrote a famous essay on "The Significance of" it "in American History"), in which Ken appeared, or something else more specifically mentioning the 1890 Census, but the "I've seen almost that exact same clue before" alarm bell went off. It wasn't something from Tuesday Trivia--I checked.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 1:39 pm Without a Disneyland hint there was no way I solve that FJ! clue as it was not for me.

What a beat down. Feel bad for Brittany. I also wonder how many have given up even before the game started. Yesterday Dimitri was right up there in buzzer attempts. I doubt that will be the case today.
NO chance on FJ. Put down Native just to have something.

Re: Thursday, January 20, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I'm not thrilled with the sameness of Ken's opening statements these past few weeks. Almost every intro is about how remarkable Amy is. They're quick to mention when Amy has achieved a new personal best, like she did at the end of today's game, but they're so focused on the positive that they won't mention an obvious change in Amy's stats, which is her declining FJ! record.
She has solved three out of the past nine FJ!s. If a returning champion's FJ! skills weren't so good, Alex would not shy away from mentioning that. Alex wanted to give hope to the new challengers before the game started, but it also built interest for the viewers at home by making them aware of the returning champion's vulnerabilities. Not every stat that's mentioned has to flatter Amy.
Also, it seems like the main purpose of the new stats department is to track the achievements of long-running, force-of-nature players specifically like Amy and Matt Amodio. But what will they do with it once Amy loses?

The first clue in ALSO KNOWN AS made me think it would be fun to have a whole category called DON'T SAY IT! where the host explains "These are things you're not supposed to say, but if you want to get the clue right you'll have to say them."
$200 In the Harry Potter universe, the prudent and skittish refer to this individual as he-who-must-not-be-named
$400 Theater performers prefer to say "break a leg" instead of this unlucky phrase
$600 In Ancient Greece, you should refer to the kindly ones, not to these
$800 Some ancient Romans wrote the number 4 as IIII so they wouldn't start spelling this god's name without finishing the job
$1000 An episode of the X-Files had some girls saying this name repeatedly into mirror with unfortunate results

Re: Thursday, January 20, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
With Holzhauer wagering, this game probably breaks the single day winnings mark.
First DD, (Amy: 4400+2000) she leaves 2400 on the table.
Second DD, (Amy: 20400+5000) she would have 22800 here to 2nd's 3400. 10k here is a very safe wager, especially on a 3rd row DD. Now she has 32800 compared to 25400 for a difference of 7400.
Third DD, (Amy: 29400+5000) she would have 36800 here to 2nd's 3400. Like above, 25k is a very safe wager, especially on a 2nd row DD. Now she has 61800.
She picked off 12k the rest of the way, now it's 73800 going into FJ to 2nd's 3000. She can wager 67799 and still maintain her lock. That's 141599, half of what she did win.
Now, do I blame her for not wagering more? No. Her DD wagers, especially in the DJ round, guaranteed victory. The above proposed wagers probably only show a 99% chance at a win. Some people just aren't wired for doing what James did, and more than once James definitely lowered his game winning chances with aggressive wagering. But winning over 141k in one game would have been pretty cool.

Re: Thursday, January 20, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Maybe if Amy surpasses Matt Amodio's winning streak next week, she will feel more inclined to start swinging for the bleachers and risking a loss in exchange for showing up in the "Single-Game Winnings" column at the Jeopardy.com Hall of Fame. Certainly, if she lasts for another seven weeks after that and passes Ken Jennings, I think there'll be a lot of disappointment if by then she hasn't at least once played a game that puts her in better than 11th place for single-game winnings. She's capable of it, as today's game demonstrates; she just doesn't seem to like the risk-reward balance involved in the attempt. Then again, James H. is a professional gambler; Amy is an engineering manager. It could be dangerous to be an engineering manager with a gambler's appetite for risk. So maybe her somewhat cautious approach is pretty well baked-in.

Re: Thursday, January 20, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
If the powers want Amy's streak to go longer it's easy enough to increase the odds through casting choices. If the powers want Amy's streak to end before she threatens Ken then it should not be difficult to bring in players who will be attempting to ring in on more clues than has been showing to happen since the box scores began.
With ratings up the suits may be quite happy with how things are going.
Amy is quite good on the buzzer and knowledge through 60 clues with hardly any real weaknesses. She's a tough out. Watch the show and wait to see how Amy does not win. Whenever it happens.
Ken, James and Matt all lost through different routes that were hard to see coming after their spectacular streaks.
Enjoy the show for the clues; ignore the games being routs as long as the opponents are not you or someone you know. Easier for some viewers and harder for others, yes.
Another way to make the show more enjoyable when the game is over early is to root for a close contest for 2nd & 3rd. Not as exciting, but it is something.

Re: Thursday, January 20, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
And if such a tipping of the scales were ever found to have been attempted in any conscious manner, the FCC could very easily sic an army of lawyers on Jeopardy! and its producers, with the resulting legal costs and bad publicity surely costing the show a lot more than whatever it costs to simply let Jeopardamy's streak run its natural course.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 7:19 pm If the powers want Amy's streak to go longer it's easy enough to increase the odds through casting choices. If indeed there were a desire to shorten Jeopardamy's run, the place to do it would be at the buzzer. Instead of keeping the same person in charge of buzzer timing for all 37+ of her games, split the buzzer duties among five J! staffers on each five-episode taping day. That wouldn't unduly punish the champ, but could reduce the incumbent's current advantage of familiarity with buzzer timing.

No need to pile on, unless you think you could have done better. Each of them is the best player they know; they have waited years for this chance only to run into a buzzsaw. No one wishes they could have put up more of a fight than they do, especially Brittany. Give them a break.

Re: Thursday, January 20, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
She may have been gunshy on FJ wagering with her recent slump, but it would have been neat to see her bet to top Ken’s personal best.
It must be nice to be able to write down $40,399 as your FJ wager and still know you will get to come back tomorrow. Is that a record maximum possible FJ safe bet for people not named James? When Ken won $75,000, he could have only safely wagered $40,199.
Yes, Amy better study up on presidents when she gets to the TOC.
Today made me 4/4 this week in FJ. Which means tomorrow will be a category from Hell for me tomorrow.
