Fourth Podium Poll for Monday, May 9, 2022

Post by opusthepenguin »

Lots of trash and a triple stumper FJ make this game eminently winnable from podium 4. The included DDs were called right after a TS clue and are thus hypothetically available to those who picked up the preceding trash and feel they would have called for the DD clue next. Purists may regard this as a speculative bridge too far, but I include the DDs for those who like to consider that possibility.

Scores going into FJ:

Danielle Maurer: 14600
Karim Oliver: 1400
Emily Levant: 8400
CORRECT RESPONSES
JEOPARDY ROUND

SJ13 $600 MENACE TO SOBRIETY: brandy (Mmmmmm.... Frozen Brandy Alexander)
SJ23 $400 INTERNATIONAL RHYME TIME: Nile isle
SJ25 $1000 ALL ABOUT AMPHIBIANS: mud puppy

DOUBLE JEOPARDY ROUND

DJ1 $2000 AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL MOVIES: Terrence Malick
DJ6 $2000 U.S. GEOGRAPHY: The Great Basin Desert
DJ12 $1600 MAKE IT SINGULAR: erratum
DJ19 $1600 THE NUREMBERG TRIALS: Hermann Göring
DJ20 $1200 LET'S GET NAUTICAL: the HMS Victory
DJ22 $1600 LET'S GET NAUTICAL: Jimmy Carter

:(

DDs aside, I picked up $10,400 in trash which leaves me well-positioned to win with a savvy bet from second. (I got FJ at the 34-second mark). WITH the DDs, both of which I got, I almost certainly enter FJ in first place. But would I be far enough ahead of Danielle to win against an optimal wager? Probably not. I'd have $10,000 going into DD3. If I bet it all, I go into FJ with $22,000. That's just barely enough. If I claw back even $51 in my DD3 wager, Danielle can win from second when we both miss FJ. Not a lot of room for "caution" in this scenario. On the other hand, I've still got a good chance on sneaking to victory when Danielle overwagers. :D

(Yes, I also forgot about the aircraft carrier...)

10,005 + FJ. Woo!
Spoiler
$5 on DD1. Pop music? Me? Surely you jest...

$1400 before the first DD which I then missed. Bad category for me, so I might not have wagered much, but I'm going with worst case and starting over at zero.

Would have then had $6800 for the second DD which was correct. Assuming a minimum wager, would have had $7805 going into a correct FJ. Could have snuck out a win.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

By my count, that’s $12k + DD1 + FJ for a theoretical total of $12600 going into FJ. So I’d be trailing Danielle, but win on a sole get.

Only three gets here (GYBR, Göring, and Farragut), totaling $4,400, plus both DDs, but only the first one is after a clue where I get LT, so I max out at $5,400, but only if I don't neg. I did neg, $3,800 worth. I got FJ right, so I feel I would have won this game if I played, but that's not what LT is about.

Anyone who's including the last DD in their total should consider Danielle's pre-FJ score to have been $12,600, since she gained $2,000 from it.

Have heard of Terrence Malick, but would not have gotten the clue.

Did not expect HMS Victory or Great Basin to poll that low.

Andes candies, In the Heat of the Night, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (needed rebound), brandy, mud puppies (needed rebound), erratum, Göring, Farragut.

Plus "Blue Christmas" and batten down the hatches DDs.

Missed Final (settled on For Whom the Bell Tolls as a desperation guess; not only is FWtBT set during the Spanish Civil War which [checks notes] hadn't started in 1929, I was trying to get away from Hemingway... who was the right author... eesh.)

That's $9000, possibly more with the first daily double. $9000 isn't enough to pass Danielle from behind; best case with the Daily Double, I land in Stratton's Dilemma and bet to lock out Emily and still don't win.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

$14,000 going into FJ!, and a correct answer there gets me...absolutely nothing.

I am more than a little offended that the Elton John album and Elvis song went TS.

Perhaps it’s best to recall that 1972 was 50 years ago and 1955 was so long ago that fewer than 1 in 10 Americans were alive then. And it’s only from my biased perspective that Elton John is any more canonical in the trivia world than Lady Gaga.

Also, Elvis didn't go TS, it was a DD so it was just a SS.
