Matt tried MattA' strategy and got burned badly. Saved himself with FJ get.

After that God awful billboard category, I was not expecting to finish DJ. Those were lloooong.

Charley's proudest get seemed like Darcy.

Daniel crushed it.

I went Ken mode for occupation or fruit pie = Tart

Spain for FJ. I couldn't remember the major event of 1901.

Aloud, I said, "As if" for the contestants being able to solve the Rosalind Russell stumper when the clue appeared. The $1000 stumper was a little more surprising although in a game with so many TS clues it was par for the course.

Daniel could have been forced to bet and made more money perhaps if Charly had found DD3. Converting it is a different story of course.

The FJ! clue had me match Charly as I never thought of the place the gentlemen had. I should have known better what "royal" likely means in the FJ! round.

Daniel was 2/4 on wagering clues to go with 1/2 yesterday. He might need to improve on .500 to keep playing long.

Thought of Thailand for the longest time before switching to correct response at last second, because I was sure it had states and not so about Thailand.

Thoughts on senior instead of principal on Occupational Homonyms $400?

Growing up my Mom listened to Camelot on both 8-track and cassette. It's burned into my memory whether I want it there or not.

Coryat: $31,800
46 R/3 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Death Valley National Park, Hot Springs National Park, punctuation, Kit Carson, Tallchief Sisters, salmonella, Vietnam War, Mexico City (DD), Auntie Mame, Aunt Polly, Sir Thomas More (DD)

I couldn't think of any other countries that prominently feature both states and a monarch, so I wrote down Australia with ~75% confidence. On reflection, the "approval of at least 4 states" bit is a gigantic clue since Australia only has six states total.

Mayim beat me to the punch on the Utah-root beer connection. (Many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints eschew caffeine, so root beer has long been the state's soda pop of choice.)

That Kit Carson clue was a mess, especially throwing in "Cheyenne" in the middle of asking about the namesake of a different Western state capital.

It works as a homonym, but I don't know about the occupational part.

Started in Hawaii for some reason but wound up down under in time. I was hoping we’d have a competitive FJ but it didn’t matter.

Like Senior Vice President or the like?

I think that's the best argument, but the word itself isn't occupational in nature. The other correct responses in the category were all actual occupations (driver, cobbler, marine, contractor) rather than modifiers that could be part of a job title.

I was thinking senior in high school/college for satisfying the occupational part of the clue. Student is an option when filling out taxes or similar under occupation.

Not a slam dunk no, but perhaps pushing the envelope. Just curious.

Um, is there any reason astrophysics won't work over cosmology?

I suppose Matt had an edge in FJ as a Canadian. Surely the Commonwealth nations learn something about their cohorts while our citizenry doesn't know New Mexico is in the US, or if they need a passport to go to Hawaii. I have nothing but a black hole in my education about Commonwealth nations, but 1901 felt about right for either Australia or Canada. Canada has provinces, Australia has kangaroos, so Australia it is.

Glad to see Daniel lay down a strong game. Mayim sure blew off Matt's interview and his 20 sport fantasy league. I'd like to know what else besides Sumo wrestling is on tap. I caught myself watching Snooker videos a couple of nights ago. It's pretty watchable if you watch the highlights. I wouldn't want to see it for a 3 hour grind.

Those music clips -groan. This isn't a Boomer rant, I would rather be exposed to newer music if I must be aurally molested. I was hoping they'd limit to the 7 second rule for free commercial use, but they seemed much longer. It didn't help to have a full length clue to read before the video. Big surprise the whole board got played, so everybody wins.

eta - The Utah = root beer stereotype was a little awkward. FWIW, I think 7-Up was the mainstream drink for LDS adults in the 70's, but it might have just been the people I knew. But I came back to root for root beer: way too much information, must be the root beer talking:
Spoiler
I'm a (diet) soda addict but always had to go to decaf cola after 6 PM for sleep hygiene. The sweeteners have improved to being almost interchangeable with sugared (or HFCS) drinks. But the decaf colas vary in drinkability, and none of them are good. It finally occurred to me to try diet root beer, since it doesn't have to be decaffeinated. Bingo. It was my secret for a while, but now it's caught on because it's normal to see 200 linear feet of soda shelves with one 18" gap where the diet root beers are.

“Royal” in the FJ clue made me think of the Commonwealth and states led me to Australia.

Always enjoy getting the old people triple stumpers like Mame, Camelot, Tallchief (making up for not getting most of the Billboard Music clues)

I had the same response. I figured it wasn't what they would be looking for, but didn't come up with "cosmology" in time.

Cosmology and astrophysics.are closely related, so I wasn't happy with the clue. Since they had both astronomy and physics in the clue that suggested to me that they didn't want astrophysicists simply echoed back in the response but that's a bad way to pin a clue.
