Fourth Podium Poll for Tuesday, May 17, 2022

Post by opusthepenguin »

Lot of high octane clues to help you catch Ryan. And he underwagers, a fact that you, being savvy, have noticed and taken into account. So if you can get up to $13,501, I think you can award yourself a fourth podium win with an asterisk. Not counting the DD, there's $15,600 in trash on the board. So it's going to be tight and you couldn't beat a shutout wager by Ryan. WITH the DD (which you have the option to include if you got the milquetoast clue) there's a potential for $24,400. AND that DD was where Ryan picked up an extra $8k. So you can fantasize that you're knocking him down to $12,000 pre-FJ. But what if having less paradoxically spurs him to bet more? I'm predicting not too many clear fourth podium wins but a lot of arguable ones.

Scores going into FJ:

Ryan Long: 20000+7000=27000
Jason Smith: 16000-3500=12500
Justinne Lake-Jedzinak: 6200
CORRECT RESPONSES
JEOPARDY ROUND

SJ22 $1000 TOOL TIME: PAIRS EDITION: mortise
SJ29 $1000 POETS: The Faerie Queene

DOUBLE JEOPARDY ROUND

DJ1 $2000 COUNTRIES IN THE U.S.: Lebanon
DJ3 $1200 COUNTRIES IN THE U.S.: China Grove
DJ5 $2000 MILITARY HISTORY: John Bunyan
DJ13 $2000 MOVIE TITLE BEFORE & AFTER: The Great Escape TO Witch Mountain
DJ19 $800 SCORING A "T--D": timid
DJ20 DD2 SCORING A "T--D": tenfold
DJ22 $2000 SCORING A "T--D": tabard
DJ23 $1200 REMEMBERING THE LADIES: the white mouse
DJ24 $2000 WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE: Kepler
DJ29 $400 REMEMBERING THE LADIES: plant or grow trees

FINAL JEOPARDY

LITERATURE: Jack Kerouac

$9400. If I'd picked up "timid" and with it DD2, I'd have the win. But I got caught not remembering the category and thus not being able to narrow down the words that could describe a milquetoast.

I guessed "White Rose" for the resistance heroine, though they were a whole group and, alas, not many eluded the Nazis.

I knew "to" Witch Mountain thanks to floridagator's recent post, a rare example of my remembering something useful from here.

Whoops! Thanks for the catch. I somehow copied the clue from one column over. Fortunately, changing it to the correct clue didn't wipe out everyone's votes. But it might change a vote or two if people want to go back and check whether they got the real DJ29 rather than the one about Up in the Air Force One.

I clammed on the two COUNTRIES IN THE U.S. clues, but got all the other clues up to and including the DD; then I was all clam on the remainder, except on the $400 REMEMBERING THE LADIES clue where I said farming instead of planting trees. Assuming I go down to the next one after picking up the T--D trash, and double up, I end up leading $13,200 to Ryan's $12,000 for FJ, which I got right, so I'm among the arguable wins.

I took several years of French in my past, and of course knew "white", but not the other word. I guessed "rose".

16000 going into FJ assuming I double up on the DD, but no joy as no FJ.

$8400 + DD2 means that I have $14400 going into FJ. Given Ryan’s underwagering, I might go all in from 2nd, giving me the win from the fourth podium.

Faerie Queene, Bunyan, timid, tabard

$5800 there. Also got the tenfold DD, which could have raised my score to $9600. If you take $8000 away from Ryan's pre-FJ score...

Ryan $12000
Jason $16000
Justinne $6200
Me $9600

I don't think I go all-in and hope Ryan bets small. A bet between $2901 and $3399 puts me in good position to win if I'm right and Ryan and Jason are both wrong, and makes Justinne be right to pass me.

I did get FJ right, but I'm not claiming a victory.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?
