Re: FJs for the 5/16/22 week
Did the unnecessary mental coin flip on Monday and settled on St. Louis. Been there in the 1970s. Rode to the top. Still recall that my dad referred to the odor in the rotating elevator cars as "rancid armpit." Probably why I remember them so well. The worst part is once you're at the top, you have no choice but to experience the smell again to get down.
No chance on Lit. Off a couple years on my Oscars. Tried to force "The Sound of Music" on the clue, even though I knew that was a Rogers & Hammerstein work. Thought maybe Mercer snuck in on one of the songs.
Archimedes screw? The invention used to lift water? And something that needed water to maintain it? That only describes one ancient wonder. But a really nice clue combining two pieces of the ancient world.
Bit of a lucky guess on Friday. Didn't know all of the details, but knew it was a lake that was likely at least some degree of blue. And I was pretty sure it was in Siberia. Guess or not, I'll take it.

Colossus of Rhodes on Thursday (dismissed the Hanging Gardens because there's no good proof they actually existed).
Gateway Arch. Been to the park but didn't go inside the arch.
I would prefer not to.

Exactly. It's like new research suggesting what kind of wax Icarus used.

What about new research suggesting they've been digging in the wrong place?opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 11:31 amExactly. It's like new research suggesting what kind of wax Icarus used.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Obviously if we'd known about that, this clue would have been easier. As it was, I got this FJ because Hanging Gardens just seemed to fit too well to be wrong. It seems kind of cruel to float an FJ like that and expect people to know that the Hanging Gardens aren't real and therefore they had to be using water screws for some inscrutable reason on a lighthouse or a colossus or something. (I'd just like to point out that "inscrutable" is the mot juste for that particular sentence.)Volante wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 4:09 pmWhat about new research suggesting they've been digging in the wrong place?opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 11:31 amExactly. You probably would've just gotten the same response.

Sigh. I may have to fire Chrome browser. It displayed 4 stacked posts, but I see by the post number that is impossible because it would have filled the first page. And, as cited earlier, Chrome induces double posts by me. Nothing to see here.Rackme32 wrote: ↑Sun May 22, 2022 10:02 pmWhat quadruple post? It's not a Chrome thing and the four posts were there for a time until a mod cleaned it up. Your explanation of how you handle the board glitch was instructive as it happens to everyone on occasion.twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 10:53 pmSigh. I may have to fire Chrome browser. Click submit once and wait. One bit of insurance I do is copy my post so I can paste it later if needed. The usual pattern is for the post to appear and the board is working again. It's usually in less than two minutes.
