3. Name an ancient Greek for whom some object, theorem, or concept in modern mathematics is named.
****************************
Dozens of answers available here, especially if you know a little more geometry than usually gets taught in American schools. You all came up with an impressive spread; Vanya's answer was a new one to me.
Question for the Archimedes answerers: did you know of a specific term named for him, or did you just go off my note and figure that there must be something? He was the one I was most worried about (hence the note), since all the "Archimedean" objects are kind of obscure; it would have been a shame for the greatest of all Greek mathematicians to have gone unanswered.

I wonder if you would have accepted Aristotle, for logic?

Had to look it up to make sure - his writings don't qualify him, but yes, the term "non-Aristotelian logic" is sometimes used by mathematicians. ("Aristotelian logic", by contrast, seems to be more of the domain of philosophers these days.)Vanya wrote:I wonder if you would have accepted Aristotle, for logic?

I wasn't at all sure that you'd accept Zeno, either, since Zeno's paradox is usually considered more of a philosophical concept than a mathematical one (though it does presuppose infinite series).goforthetie wrote:Had to look it up to make sure - his writings don't qualify him, but yes, the term "non-Aristotelian logic" is sometimes used by mathematicians. I was ready to argue that Archimedes' Principle should count as mathematics. Never heard of his property. I was hoping being from Sicily would throw a few people off him, and I figured Socrates would have been a sheep. Oh well At least all the Passover seders I went to with my ex paid off for question 1.

Did you add that note to number four in the original post regarding the word "bootstrapped" after I submitted my answers, or am I really that lazy of a reader?

That was there from the beginning. Maybe you saw it out of the corner of your eye and thus were subliminally influenced...Le Master wrote:Did you add that note to number four in the original post regarding the word "bootstrapped" after I submitted my answers, or am I really that lazy of a reader?
