There was Andy's sports category and a solve would have given him the win. Another 3xer goes down. With 2 seconds left I scribbled ping pong just to have a response even though I knew all the reasons it was wrong. When Doug's trampoline was shown I knew immediately that was it.

My precall off the category was rugby sevens, women's boxing and golf.

Doug was outplayed for a lot of the game, but the sole solve in FJ can always come in handy.

Strange game when I can run Arabic and 6-Pack, but can't get a sports-related FJ clue. I did get Gaslight thanks to the movie portion of the clue.

As sports categories go, this FJ wasn't an ideal example of the genre for some of us (or for Andy, obviously. He really needed something more along the lines of the FJ from Roger Craig game 7 . . .). I had absolutely no chance; this wasn't one that any viewer could reason out without having prior knowledge of the trampoline being an Olympic event. My first thought was beach volleyball, but the stated dimensions seemed too small. So then, based on that and the "raised area of play" part of the clue, I went to ping pong -- but that was problematic too, because that ping pong table would have to be awfully big to fit the clue. Still, I went down swinging with table tennis. So I'll have to wait till Season 29 for my next shot at checking the "I got all 5 right" box on the weekly poll (not counting Kids Week, of course).

I was definitely in the "gaslight is a verb???" column. What was disappointing was that I even got to the name of the Ingrid Bergman movie -- but I couldn't pull the trigger, and stayed clam for the clue. I maintain that at the very least, that was an undervalued clue.

"Gaslighting" — wow, you know you've hit on an obscurity when even Alex says he's never heard of it.

He'd have probably gotten the clue from the "Gas" in quotation marks and the Bergman/Boyer TOM, he's no doubt heard of the film. Steely Dan referenced the term in their 2000 song Gaslighting Abbie, as per Fikklefame.com

When the category was revealed, all I could precall was trampolining. (I think they would have credited me for the gerund.) I spent the thirty seconds after the clue reveal wondering (fruitlessly) if it could possibly be anything else.

So Andy didn't cost himself the game negging at the end of DJ (it looked to me like he went the wrong way on a 50/50), but the third place sole solve still makes it possible for him (and me) to play the "what if" game. Too bad.

I only got trampoline because I thought of it before I heard the question. I had a bar trivia question where an answer was trampoline. I remember impressing my friends by knowing that trampoline is actually an olympic sport. The other sports include synchronized diving (who else had a good time watching that at the last olympics?) and the triathlon. Are there any other new sports to think of?

In addition to not knowing things, and forgetting things, I sometimes visualize one answer, but think of another. Tonight, I did just that with the buttresses response, thought of the Gothic flying buttresses, but said, what are buffers?

Then again, my darn mind got in the way for gaslight; I first said "Gaslight" as a gut reaction, then had to check myself - that makes no sense. I guess some "Gaslight" movie research I did a while ago made an impression on my subconscious, haha. Maybe I'm a good test case, for how to suck at trivia? Lol.

Cedars of Lebanon was a nice get. It sounded like she knew "strangler figs" from personal experience, so that was also some excellent knowledge.

Again, I got the bottom level clue, with the Followil brothers. Has Jeopardy changed the format of music categories? Now, they put the newest bands on the bottom, and the famous bands on top? I thought it was the other way around - the academically pleasing answers on bottom, and the trashy answers on top.

This is the first of 15 FJs that I've missed. Aw, not exactly the best way to phrase it but anyway, my streak is over. As is Andy's. I kind of liked the guy; in fact, he resembles me in appearance. Gaslight, Isle of Man, others had me flummoxed when missed but overall, a return to smarts after yesterday's disaster!

I'm pretty much with you on that one. Trampoline? Really? Not if I had a month to come up with responses.

FJ was a mystery to me - I wasn't aware that trampoline was an Olympic sport. My guess was rhythmic gymnastics, which at least was in the same "family". I got "gaslight" and was surprised when Alex said he didn't know it. Didn't do well in the "bass & drums" category either.

I didn't say criticize, I said critique. I don't know if I know what the difference is, but I don't like being misquoted. The item I was referring to was you pointing out that the plural of Lord Protector is Lords Protector, not Lord Protectors, which was used by another poster referring to Oliver and Richard Cromwell. Perhaps that doesn't really qualify as "critiquing the grammar", but it seems likes it at least in the neighborhood.

In case the "yesterday" part was confusing, it was a Tuesday post in Monday's game thread, and I wrote my post Wednesday night, therefore I said that it was mentioned yesterday.

Golf is returning to the program in 2016 in addition to rugby sevens. Neither of which are particularly "new" but they're new-ish, at least to the Games. Golf hasn't been competed at the Olympic level since 1904.

Golf? Brilliant idea, combining the fast-paced excitement of golf with the low-key pensiveness of the Olympics. It's a natural fit, like chess boxing.

This was a horribly-worded final. Trampoline isn't a sport in of itself. It's a discipline within the sport of gymnastics.

The Olympics operate under a 3-tiered system of "sport-discipline-event".
Sport: Gymnastics
Discipline: Artistic Gymnastics, Trampoline, Rhythmic Gymnastics
Event: Artistic Gymnastics, Women's Individual All-Around.

In fact, it was worded to the point where the correct response isn't actually correct - there is no correct response to the clue, and I believe we need to see a returning contestant or two here!
