"August 1914" is good for "Guns of August."
BTW, look for the new game around 1:00 CDT each weekday, except for Friday. Day 5 will go up in the morning, and Day 6 later in the afternoon.

Mozilla no longer supports Firefox 2, and there are security issues whose patches will not be backported to Firefox 2 (see http://www.mozilla.org/security/known-v ... fox20.html). If you have the ability/permission, you should get an up-to-date browser.mujason wrote:None of the scores are showing up on my browser (Firefox 2.0).
I am looking through the JavaScript code to see if there is a function that is used that Firefox 2 does not support.

Looks nice indeed! Woulda been nicer had it one more perfecto! I totally missed the "Avila" in the 15 pointer.OrangeSAM wrote:Yes, yes, yes. My late sister was named for St Theresa of Avila, so I knew that name well. But that's all I knew about her, her name. I got so hung up on the book titles that meant nothing to me, I skipped over the "Avila."

Isn't Mozilla already on Firefox 10 or some equally obnoxious iteration? For a while it felt like they were issuing updates every two weeks. I gave up and switched to Chrome.rjaguar3 wrote:Mozilla no longer supports Firefox 2, and there are security issues whose patches will not be backported to Firefox 2 (see http://www.mozilla.org/security/known-v ... fox20.html). Excellent, thanks.A rickshaw is more properly known as a jinriksha, which is derived from the Japanese jinrikisha, coming from jin (person) + riki (strength) + sha (vehicle).

I thought of Theresa, but then I decided Bernini was 100 years earlier than he actually is . . Day 2: Thanks for making the saints the lower value clues! I "gained" 12 points by clamming on 6-8-10 as opposed to 9-12-15.

Why...why would you switch to Chrome if that is behavior you're trying to move away from?alamble wrote: Isn't Mozilla already on Firefox 10 or some equally obnoxious iteration? For a while it felt like they were issuing updates every two weeks. I gave up and switched to Chrome.
Mozilla took that update philosophy from Chrome! (To compare, Chrome is at version 20.)
Also, my horrific SHC streak is still going strong...

Because Chrome has largely abandoned it, while Firefox hasn't. At least, I'm not getting prompts every two weeks to update to the newest version of the browser.Volante wrote:Why...why would you switch to Chrome if that is behavior you're trying to move away from?alamble wrote: Isn't Mozilla already on Firefox 10 or some equally obnoxious iteration? Both now automatically update unless you explicitly tell it otherwise. Chrome's always done that (they've also always suppressed the version number. You were never using "Chrome 15" it was always "Chrome". You had to dig around for the specific number.)alamble wrote:Because Chrome has largely abandoned it, while Firefox hasn't. Firefox didn't start doing that until v5 or 6. More critically, though, it was NOT a graceful transition between upgrade methods. But to say you moved to Chrome to ditch the rapid fire updates overlooks, well, Chrome's rapid fire updates. You've just never been exposed to them. Out of sight, out of mind!

Not really a quibble, but day 2's "15" question turned out to be something of a coin flip, unless you knew the teen movie in question. The plot description more closely matched than it did
In other words, kind of a tough TOM there.

I was torn between the two, and went with "As you like it" for that reason. Of course, if we'd been told that Amanda Bynes's character was named Viola . . .

If you have seen the movies or even the previews, most of the character names are identical or similar to the ones in the play, enough so that it stands out. The school names also match the place names in the play.Magna wrote:Not really a quibble, but day 2's "15" question turned out to be something of a coin flip, unless you knew the teen movie in question. Re: 2012 Summer Hiatus Challenge -- Round 1 Instant Replay Thread
A few questions from me based on the answers I've seen so far (R1D2 spoilers ahead):
Spoiler
For the 8-pointer, I'm not sure whether the clue has one correct response. It seems that Nathanael was the intended answer (John 1:46), but the Armenian church was founded by Thaddeus and Bartholemew. (EDIT: My World Book Encyclopedia says that Nathanael is sometimes associated with Bartholemew, and Nathanael's entry is "See Bartholemew, Saint.") (EDIT 2: Ignatius Catholic Study Bible says that Nathanael and Bartholemew are the same person [notes to Mark 3].)
For the 10-pointer, I ruled "James" wrong. Although I know there are at least two apostles named James, I can't find anything about either James having a twin.

are there official answers posted anywhere? or are we just supposed to wait until austin powers posts his answers?
i agree with magna about she's the man. luckily, i saw the first 15 minutes of that movie on an airplane, which includes the crucial information that. so that made it easy.
did anybody else guess the armenian patron saint through?
there's an interesting expected-value game due to the scoring system. the 6-point question gives you luke and asks you to name one of the other 3 gospel writers. even with no other information, if you know all four, you have a 1/3 chance of guessing the right one, which gives you an EV of 0, the same as clamming: 1/3 chance of +6, and 2/3 chance of -3) so if you even have an inkling that maybe you should eliminate, you should expect to come out ahead by guessing one of the other two.

Yes, that's what I meant by knowing the teen movie in question. If you knew the movie, and had a passing knowledge of Shakespeare, it would be an easy question (imo). It was the TOM (the plot description) that was the negbait.TreehugginCowgirl wrote:If you have seen the movies or even the previews, most of the character names are identical or similar to the ones in the play, enough so that it stands out.
