I finally took the science quiz. My score was 32/50. Not very impressive, but not totally terrible for an English major.

Re: Reretaken Down Political Parody

I came across this parody and really enjoyed it. It uses the song "One Day More" from Les Miserables, one of my favorite musicals. Depending on your politics, you'll either love it or hate it. But I found it very clever.

Enjoy.

If I saw something like that, any picture I snapped of it (after my basic panic instincts took over) would've been much, much flatter.

I used "guy" facetiously. From what I read about them, it was almost certainly a female since the male is much smaller. And they have the ability to change color from white to yellow and back again depending what type of plant they are on. I'm surprised people are commenting on the quality of the picture; it was just my Droid phone camera. Finally, I left her be and we each went our own merry ways.

My comment wasn't on the picture as a whole, but on the quality of the spider.

So I took that science quiz now. Meh. Scored 49/50, missing a ridiculous "what Greek letter is used as a symbol for bla bla bla" question. But I didn't like the quiz overall, as only about half of it has to do with scientific literacy. The rest is trivia that doesn't make any difference in understanding the natural world. And you could answer 10 questions purely based on knowledge of Latin and Greek, without having any idea about the science in the question.

OTOH, I like that you get the recap of the entire quiz at the end, with full questions and answers. Too many online quizzes omit that part.

I second this. I love spiders. I've never intentionally killed one in my life. I even feel bad destroying their webs while cleaning the house.

Don't know if I'd consider a meteorologist a "government official"...

A lot of the NHC makes cracks like that. Dr. Avila and Dr. Franklin are quite well known for doing such.

Yeah, I agree with you both. The vast majority of spiders are not just harmless, but beneficial. I get annoyed running into webs all the time (I live in the country) but basically I find them beautiful and interesting.

Unless the definition of "government official" includes everyone on the government payroll, even the chefs at the Capitol, then I'm stickin with my initial remark.
