As most televised awards shows continue to suffer ratings declines, the Golden Globes has a secret weapon: For the second year in a row, it will air behind an NFL Wild Card game on NBC.

The Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles will face off at 4:40 p.m. ET on Sunday for a chance to move on in this year’s playoffs, giving the Globes a tremendous lead-in. But the timing is tight: Should the game go long, that might bump up against the Globes’ 8 p.m. ET start time.

According to insiders, NBC has a simple plan in case that happens: If the football game goes long, the Globes telecast won’t start until it ends, and will still run in its entirety.

Last year was the first time NBC ran the late Sunday afternoon game during Wild Card weekend, and the timing was tight: The matchup, between the Eagles and the Chicago Bears, ended at around 7:54 p.m. — giving NBC six minutes to vamp before turning things over to the Globes.

I have no reference for how long an NFL playoff game takes, except that most regular season Sunday 1 PM games are done around 4:30, no? It does seem like they're scheduling it a little bit tight if they started at 4:30 like my DVR says - game ends around 8 PM, when the Golden Globes start.

Sometime within the last 2-3 years, I seem to recall the NHL on NBC had an "marquee" outdoor game on Saturday night 8 PM ET, and SNL had a new episode at 11:35 PM. They cut away from hockey and went to SNL, putting the last 5-10 minutes of hockey on NBCSN, their national sports network. Regular season hockey games almost always are done within 2:45 like clockwork: game delays are few with the exception of serious injury, and the game is exactly 3 20-minute periods, plus 5 minutes of sudden death 3v3 overtime, plus a three round shootout followed by a sudden death shootout. But something about the outdoor game probably caused a delay - power or bad ice or weather, none of which is typically an issue indoors.

The reverse happened in 2001 with the XFL on NBC. An XFL game that was already delayed by injury and a power outage went into X-treme OT (I can only assume that's what they called it), and JLo's show, which was supposed to be a ratings blockbuster, was broadcast on delay - they didn't even tell JLo she was not "live from New York". Ratings spiked around 11:30, but bombed a few minutes later once people saw the XFL was on. Lorne Michaels was FURIOUS, and I'm sure she now has a solid, protected 11:35 PM start for SNL.

So, my guess would be that the Globes go on NBC, and football on NBCSN (or available streaming). Maybe NFL Network too? They could delay it for 10, 15 minutes - football OTs usually aren't that long, even in post-season. One game in the 256-game NFL season ended up in a "tie", meaning more than 1 15-minute OT period would be needed in the playoffs.

Yeah I had seen that so there was an official word that delaying the Globes was the plan in place, I just am curious if there is a limit on that. A 10-15 minute delay, sure no problem, but say the game is already running long with reviews or injury delays, and THEN begins overtime. Are the Hollywood types going to sit there for an hour? Still hoping to find out!

Don't they say the Golden Globes provides free booze? It'll take a little longer to get to the party, that's all...Though I'm not sure why broadcasting on tape delay would be a big deal, either. I'm sure SNL has been delayed by football more than once in the last few years.

It's 11:30 -- for whatever reason (probably Lorne Michaels-related), "SNL" didn't have its start time moved to 11:35 the way "The Tonight Show" did in 1991.

Big difference here is the NFL gets waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy bigger ratings than the XFL or hockey or the Golden Globes

That was a different Middle Eastern situation, and a different network. The ABC News broadcasts that eventually became "Nightline" were the result of the Iran hostage crisis (1979-1981), and what they were pushing back on ABC's schedule was a lineup of various drama reruns. (In the film "Argo," you get to see an ABC broadcast announcement that "The Love Boat" is being delayed.)
