I'm impressed with how people on this board reacted to the news. Most decided this wasn't the place to discuss it. The ones registering disappointment were respectful. Some pointed out interesting trivia factoids. Suffice to say everyone behaved just slightly better than a certain former super-champion who has posted on here before;

I'm just curious; does this mean he was playing under tremendous duress when he was competing against those horrible white people Julia Collins and Ben Ingram in the ToC, all hosted by that despicable white man Alex Trebek? Poor soul! Maybe that's why he lost?

Is Jeopardy going to ask about Arthur Chu's Twitter posts?
[Edit: this was a comment on the relevance of the discussion to the 2016 current events thread, from which it has since been moved.]

One thing that's becoming evident is that liberals made the mistake of conflating the economic anxiety of lagging Rust Belt communities as the American economy shifts toward a technocratic and highly-skilled workforce with the racial resentment present among working-class whites. They certainly not mutually exclusive, but treating them as one and the same alienated Democrats in those areas, which may have proved decisive.

Chu's from Ohio, so it was a worse night for him than most. I say give him a chance to apologize now that the pain and anger are not so fresh.

Don't hold your breath awaiting an apology from Arthur. But this should be in Reretaken Down (if anywhere on the board).

Yeah, that's what "Reretaken Down" is for.

Our grandkids will never believe us when we try to explain 2016 to them.

Not sure how familiar you are with Chu and his Twitter, but he has written even worse things than those two Tweets above. (As in, advocating violence and murder) Not to mention done things like call in bomb threats to disrupt right-wing speeches at a university. All of which he is immensely proud of, and never apologized for.

This isn't new, either. I remember when there were news articles about his initial Jeopardy run, he gave interviews expressing a lot of anger and bitterness towards whites, who he viewed as the great nemesis of his life. This even included some gratuitous insults towards Ken Jennings of all people, who wrote a fine article praising and defending Chu.

Vanya, is that you?
(I realize I'm not the only person who's thought that.)

The thought crossed my mind as well. But Vanya never mentioned an interest in chess nor did he seem to be big into wagering from what I recall. Iron Neck didn't comment on Dylan's Nobel Prize and Vanya was a big Dylan fan.

So unless he created an entire new online personality, I would say they are not the same person.

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long-stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah, give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah, when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

Wait. I always assumed "Vanya" was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the titular protagonist of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. I was especially confused by the (irrelevant) reference above, but ignored it.

Apparently, it's a reference to on older member of this forum instead? Can anyone summarize this particular curious character?

You shouldn't have any difficulty searching for and reading his posts.

Can't say I'm nearly interested enough to look up a random member of this forum and read through dozens of his posts to gain a personality profile. All because one or two people made a reference.

However, I'm interested just enough to read someone's short summary of said personality. Especially if they're the ones that made the reference to begin with. :)

We are not talking about some random member. We are talking of the notorious Vanya.

Two posts would probably be sufficient.

A pugnacious, contrarian, politically conservative Russian.

He bought off the cops by offering them a tie.

With a not-so-subtle streak of misogyny. But I don't think he was Russian, just a Russophile.

All of the above.

I'm also pretty sure Woof is correct. Aside from the board Vanya has a very American sounding name.... though, of course, it could be an Anglicized version of a Russian name. My guess was always that he has Russian heritage.
