If I remember the cards right, this was the full house one? It would probably be negged, since a full house would be "twos full of queens." "Twos over queens" refers to two pair.
How on earth could twos be "over" queens in two pair?
"Twos full of queens" works too, but that's just another way of saying the same thing. ("full of" = "over") We've always declared a full house by saying what 3 of a kind is ruling over the pair, because the 3 of a kind breaks ties. (In wild card games, or community-cards games, obviously it's possible for exact same full houses to present, as well as both twos over queens and queens over twos in the same hand, whereas the latter would win.)

In two pair, you don't have to say "over" anything. The higher valued card is "over."
"Aces and eights" is two pair. "Aces over eights" is a full house with aces as the triplet.
Anyway- that's how we always declared them, but we were picky at how we declared our hands because we played you get what you declare. If you have a better hand than that, TFB! (If you have a worse one than you declared... TFB for you again, but for an entirely different reason!!)
You're completely right. I have no idea what I was thinking with that one. Carry on...

Arrrgggg...

I was the contestant sitting next to Case when two of my dream categories showed up: Furniture and Wars. This just goes to show how much of this is just sheer dumb luck. In my game, I got absolutely none of my dream categories and in FJ, the category was at the top of my nightmares list. Wait till you see how that plays out on Friday...

I missed the Duncan Fife question with an after-the-fact "of course". And, yes, Veneer is even more correct than "laminate" as the individual layers of plywood are known as veneers. BTW, I'm a long-time woodworker so the furniture category was right up my alley. I ran the wars category.

in my 3rd game, alex smugly pointed out that salsa dancing is his specialty while negging me on "rumba" (crucially overturned during commercial break, giving me the lead going into FJ).

In college I took an English Lit survey course with some 200 students. One of the professors used the word "aficionado" at least a half-dozen times in one lecture on Hemingway, each time pronouncing it uh-fik'-ee-uh-nah'-doe. Some of those people probably mispronounce it still.

Good luck explaining anything at all to that crowd.

What a bright, personable champion to start the season. Great interview story too. I'll be glad to see more of him.

Awful start with several dumb misses in the first round, but 21-0 in the second round gave me $33K+ Coryat plus 2 monster DDs and a correct FJ. Nice start to the new season. Now to get on the show before even more of my brain cells atrophy.

Hooray for another season of J! - glad to have my daily fix back!

Alex Trebek looks great (as usual!); glad to hear he feels great as well. And Johnny Gilbert sounds great, and the new intro's great, and the lakes are all "Great" - everything's just great :D !

Some tough categories on the boards to start the season off. I loved the pun in the "MY SO CAL LIFE" category title, although despite living here I only managed to go 2/5 (missing Vin Scully [sports blind spot], San Fernando [news to me], and Route 66 [surprisingly, stayed CLAM because I thought it too easy to finish such a tough category]). Also missed Ahab because I momentarily forgot the category :o (a little rusty after summer vacation, I guess!).

In DJ!, I went 2/5 in FURNITURE and was disappointed that one of the few furniture designers I could name (Stickley) didn't make an appearance. Missed my first DD of the season (what, already??) with Henry V instead of Julius Caesar. Was really hoping to keep those new season stats up a little longer :( .

A hypothesis is what you're testing, so by definition, hypotheses are unproven.
So you're saying that a hypothesis is sort of like a proposition that forms the basis for a theory?

Wouldn't that be a "premise"?

A strong finish, at least, with a geography (yay!) clue for FJ! Precalled the five largest islands in order (only 'cause I had previously made a flash card for them after missing some earlier FJ!), then precalled another 11 islands (though not Hispaniola) just to fill the rest of the commercial break time. BTW, the names in order sort of make a pattern: GNBMB, if you see N and M as similar (but you have to remember they are not in alpha order).

Congratz to Vamsi on the win and looking forward to tomorrow's (well, technically today's) game.

Oh, no doubt. But this was all of them (again, perhaps excepting the Brit). Sep-TOO-uh-jint may have been considered a mispronunciation at some point in the past, but by 1990 at least, I'm thinking it was standard. I would bet their pronunciation traces back to Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia in the early 20th century and from there back to old Princeton of the 19th.

Unfortunately, I can't find any extant poetry from old Princeton that uses the word. Otherwise I'd examine the meter and offer something more definitive.

I would have loved that lakes category. I actually arrived in LA and told my dad I hadn't studied bodies of water yet and that he needed to get me an atlas. Spent my insomnia studying rivers and lakes and even made the mental note "Yellowknife is on Great Slave Lake". Those Oscar Winners and Furniture Makers would have cancelled it out anyways I suppose. Studying the right things is just impossible :)

And CWE wasn't even the "hit" from the album. That would be "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", followed closely by "Bang and Blame" (minus outro).

Of course, my personal favorite from that album is the closing song, "You". But only diehards would know of that song.

Interesting, and I'm disappointed that this post seems to have been lost in the shuffle. Does anyone else have anything to add here? Not that it would affect the final outcome, but it might have made things more interesting!
Does veneer work as a "layered wood product"? I suppose an argument can be made. Laminate definitely has layers (as does plywood, the presumed intended response). It depends how you parse "layered". A veneer doesn't have layers, but it is "layered" in the same way that cold cuts are layered on a sandwich.

Alison Parakh: $6,000-$5,500=$500
If Dianne and Vamsi both make the MSB, there scores, if wrong, are......

Dianne $5,199
Vamsi $5,599 (would have had $4,800 if he had missed FJ with his actual bet)

So Alliison could win on a TS if she bets $400 or less. Yet she took her chances Dianne and Vamsi would both bet zero. Vamsi also erred in his wagering, falling below what Dianne would have if she makes the MSB and is wrong. But she overbet, so he would have won on the TS when logical betting would have sent him home in third place on a TS.

Laminate is a broad term. Formica and the like (which are not plywood) are made of layers of resin-impregnated paper. Whereas plywood is also a laminate that is made of veneers.

I've gone back and looked at the question again:

"Both Alvar Aalto and Charles Eames designed furniture using this layered wood product"

Plywood appears to be the expected answer. I've now changed my mind. Alison's answer was not correct because they were looking for the end product, not its components. Dianne's answer of laminate is too broad, I would argue that she should have been asked to be more specific.

But then again, if you know how Eames actually made his chairs, he didn't start with plywood, as he made it himself from veneers that he glued and pressed into shape in a form. I've done this myself. I start with solid wood and cut it into thin slices of veneer so it's easy to bend. So, actually, they didn't USE plywood at all. They MADE it. Out of veneers.

Boy this is a real tricky one...

Now I really think I should have questioned my answer being ruled incorrect (the infamous veneer one). However, I stank up the room on FJ so probably wouldn't have mattered in the long run, except perhaps i might have come in 2nd not 3rd. Yes, I blew it on a lot of other categories as well-and by the time the war category came up I was too shell-shocked (pun intended) to try to guess on Ypres and Inchon. However, Vamsi and Diane played well, and deserved what they earned.

I stress "Septuagint" on the first syllable, with secondary stress on the last. SEP-tu-a-gint.

Final Jeopardy was an instaget for me. One of my wrong answers on a January 2009 online test which I scored 34 on involved a failure to say New Guinea on a question about the world's second-largest island (despite having thought of it). Between that and knowing it's divided between Papua N.G. and Indonesia , it was simple. Hooray Vamsi!

Neither. Monday marked the 28th anniversary of the Alex Trebek version (really, a week late, but close enough).

Vin Scully is probably worth knowing because he may come up for non-sports-related reasons, given that he is a broadcasting legend -- yes, even more so than Alex Trebek. (And he was a game show host once upon a time -- relatively briefly.)

The game show he hosted was It Takes Two on NBC in 1969-70, he hosted a short-lived daytime talk show for CBS in 1973 called The Vin Scully Show.

Well, not so much the existence as the name (since everyone just calls it "The Valley"). (Probably would have negged with San Bernardino if a DD.)

But point definitely taken on Vin Scully - with 63 seasons for the Dodgers, I guess I can no longer write him off as just another flash in the pan. ;)

But he didn't tell us what term they were really looking for. I said "laminate" as well, so I know I get the Coryat points. But what's the more correct response?

I was surprised to see a clue vectoring the legend of the Septuagint so uncritically. They said "this early version of the Old Testament was translated by 70 writers". *It's actually 72 according to the most popular versions of the story. But some sources say 70, so that's not the reason I'm raising my eyebrows.) According to the story, the translators were placed in 72 separate rooms and told to translate the Torah into Greek. All 72 produced identical Greek translations, thus establishing the authority of the Septuagint as coming from God.

There's a chance that the story may not be entirely historically accurate. All I'm sayin'.
The correct answer should have simply been "plywood" for the Eames and Aalto chairs. Plywood is a type of laminate - but technically they would have been entitled to have asked a BMS on that one since there are laminates made of materials other than wood.
