Excellent shoutout for the Archive in Russ' interview!
Great result too, Chuck was well within reach of winning the game, he was just one "What is FedEx?" away from playing for a million!
After a bit of thinking, Final came relatively easy - I also read something about the phrase "white man's burden" not that long ago too (can't remember where), so that might have helped.

No chance on FJ. I thought the phrase was associated with slavery.
Re: Monday, May 12, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I'm a total retail nut, and I had no idea that Toys "Я" Us bought out the remains of K-B Toys. I thought K-B just went out of business outright.
DeLorean and Beatrix Potter were both brain farts for me. I knew them, but couldn't for the life of me remember the name.
Overvalued: Puerto Rico, aerate.
Stupid moment: "Um. quintessence? No, that's not an adjective. What could they possibly want?!" Adjective, stupid.
Where did all our time go in DJ!? No game with a speed demon like Ken should have clues left on the board.
Not that I expectd to own the game, but 5 right and $1,200 isn't my lowest in a normal game, much less BOTD. Remember that I had a total goose-egg on February 3.
NHO White Man's Burden.

I actually fist-pumped when Ken's answer was revealed there. It got a little hairy there. I thought it was a pretty cupcake FJ for this tournament, but others may disagree.
Hooray Ken! And maybe you'll be replacing Trebek after all...

I basically answered the same thing as Russ. Never heard of the phrase.

After the last time they used it, I was hoping they'd burn that @!@#ing Spy Novel category and never speak of it again...and it rises from the ashes for the BotD. WTF.
Got FJ...about 10 seconds after time was up. Oh well.
One third of my dream final is in place. Great game!

His bet left him below Ken's MSBIW score if he is wrong on FJ.econgator wrote:Which was?cf1140 wrote:Surprise Surprise. Chuck Forrest made a dumb bet.

I remember hearing the phrase in various high school history classes but could not come up with it for the life of me.
I was also very surprised to see that they didn't get to all the clues. I thought they always did in tournament play (especially with how good this bunch is), but I'm probably making that up.

Re: Monday, May 12, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Ken had $15,000 after the J! round. At that rate, I thought he'd have at least $30,000 by the end of the DJ! round, but he ended up with only $18,600 going into FJ. But Ken won the game anyway, so congrats to him!
Picked up Lach trash: "camellia", "jasmine", "arbitrary"
Didn't get FJ. I wrote down "your arms" just to have something.

After Ken got the true Daily Double in the J! round, I said, "well, this game's over." Little did I know... thought Chuck did a marvelous job after that just to make a game out of it.
I've read quite a lot of Kipling, so FJ! was an instaget.

Pretty cool game from start to finish, didn't think the material was super difficult today.
Certainly have no problem with KJ winning, but it would have been cool had Chuck pulled the upset after all these years. He's still probably my favorite Jeopardy champion with his initial skill and strategy. And his book has been and always will be my trivia bible and what propelled me to trivia geekdom.

There were a couple of in between remarks by Ken and Chuck that took up some time.TenPoundHammer wrote:

Hydrothermal "vents" was overvalued at $1,000 in the first round.
Picked up K-B.
No clue on FJ!

Re: Monday, May 12, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Today's game shows why it isn't over 'til it's over, as they say.
I imagine it honestly could have gone either way between the two main contenders (I feel bad for Russ because he did show flashes of brilliance in this game), 'cause it seems like Chuck knew a lot of the ones that Ken got right. I also think Ken may be lucky Chuck didn't get the second daily double, 'cause I feel he would have gone aggressive, and my hunch is got it right. Very well done to Ken, hopefully you get to rest slightly easier before facing your two opponents.

Re: Monday, May 12, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I did poorly on this board. (Compared to non-tournament boards, anyway.)
I did get the DD Ken missed about the polar explorer who wrote to J.M. Barrie. I was just making a guess, but my thought process was something like this: "It's either Amundsen (Norwegian), Peary (American), or Scott (British). But Barrie was British, so maybe he was friends with the British explorer."
I also got this FJ fairly quickly. I already knew that the expression "the white man's burden" was credited to Kipling, so even though I've never known which specific Kipling work it came from, it still clicked right away.
