Wildcard Cutoffs redux

Post by Bamaman »

The originator of this topic, KellyJ!, did a great job compiling the data for wild card cutoffs for all the tournaments in the Trebek era. Unfortunately, he has not posted or even logged on here since November 2011, so I don't know if he has any intention of returning or updating his information.

With this season's Teen Tournament coming up soon, I have decided to revive this topic with updated averages for the cutoffs for all the tournaments through the Battle of the Decades and will update them again when the next tournament is held.

I have a separate post for each type of tournament.

TOC
Seniors
College
Teen
Teachers
Super-TOCs
Professors

A Super-TOC is one like the Million Dollar Masters or the BOTD and will add any future tournaments of this type when and if they occur.

I have copied a lot of the data from the original thread but I have gone through to verify the information that he provided. A number of the early tournaments are unarchived and he has gotten the data from Mark Barrett. (I apologize if the data came from someone else, but I do think that is the case).

I have created placeholders where I will be inputting the data over the next several posts.

Seniors Tournament

1987 Seniors Tournament (Season 3)-Held in May-Won by Zeke Zevilla, Jr.
$6,000 (Lee Saunders)-FJ right, players 2/3
$5,800 (Jane Weaver)-FJ right, players 2/3

Lee and Jane played in the same game. Jane led Lee going into FJ.

1988 Seniors Tournament (Season 4)-Held in May-Won by Peggy Kennedy
$7.900 (DJ Smith) FJ right, players 2/3
$7,800 (Tom Wickham) FJ right players 2/3

D.J. Smith qualified as a wild card but was disqualified due to having appeared on another game show too recently and Tom was granted the final wild card spot with a score of $7,800. He got FJ on a 2/3 clue. Bob Winthrop also had $7,800. He missed FJ on a 1/3 FJ clue. For statistical purposes I am treating DJ's score as the last qualifying score.

1989 Seniors Tournament (Season 5)-Held in July-Won by Ouida Rellstab
$5,000 (Freda Mammina)-FJ wrong, players 1/3
$4,800 (Ruth Boyd)-FJ wrong, players 1/3

QF% is unarchived, Assumption Ruth was the highest scoring non-wild card is based on a newspaper article courtesy of Seaborgium. Stats will be changed if QF5 is discovered.

1990 Seniors Tournament (Season 6)-Held in July-Won by George Souls
$2,700 (Arnold Yellin)
$2,600 (Cole Andersen)

1991 Seniors tournament (Season 7)-Held in July-Won by Lou Pryor
A fifth wildcard spot was added in this tournament due to the triple-zero finish in QF2. Malcolm Post got the fourth wildcard with $6,000, and Kay Paul picked up the extra spot with $3,000. All of the quarterfinalists in this tournament who did not go on to the semifinals finished with $0; Florence Cannizzo and Pat Van Melle were tied for the highest pre-FJ! score with $5,900 each (and both were contestants in the triple-zero game).

1992 Seniors Tournament (Season 8)-Held in July-Won by Leonard Schmidt
$2,000 (Lois Rosenfeld)
$1,599 (Mag Birge)

1993 Seniors Tournament (Season 9)-Held in July-Won by Marilyn Kneeland
$10,010 (Hugh Murphy)-FJ correct, players 3/3
$10,000 (Helen Druva)-FJ correct, players 3/3

1994 Seniors Tournament (Season 10)-Held in July-Won by Bart Thomas
$400 (Frances Taliaferro)
$300 (Dodge Crockett)

1995A Seniors Tournament (Season 11)-Held in July-Won by Aaron Klein
$7,000 (Steve Paquette)
$5,200 (Fran Rothman)

1995B Seniors Tournament (Season 12)-Held in December-Won by David Cuneo
$8,400 (Darryl Adams)
$8,100 (Diane Lilly)

Averages (10 tournaments):
Average lowest score to get a wild card: $5,541
Average highest score not to get a wild card: $4,920

For averaging purposes, I counted the tournament with the extra wild card as only having four wild cards, with the fourth place person being the lowest qualifier and the fifth place person being the first person out. This differs from KellyJ!'s method.

I'd been editing my post at the end of KellyJ!'s thread to add new cutoffs as they occurred. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26&p=41821#p41821

You've got Max Levaren's first name as Mark, and have given erroneously identical pre-FJ scores to the tied #4 and #5 non-winners in the 1996 Teen Tournament.

Fixed, thanks for the catch. Hopefully some of the unarchived games will pop up and the holes can be filled in.

Actually I'm still here - but under a different identity due to login errors (I didn't re-register until I got ready to present an April Fool's joke to the board this year). I still maintain and update the files on my computer and my backup flash drive (so if something happens to this board I've got the info).

The scores that I mentioned but you can't find sources to back them up with came from a couple of now-defunct fan sites (one of which was an AOL-based archive of Season 20 games by 2002 1-time champion Ronnie O'Rourke).

If you have the extra time, Bamaman, I'd love to see these lists updated to note whether the listed players got final right or wrong, and also whether the Final round in the QF game was 0/3, 1/3, 2/3, or 3/3. I have a suspicion that in any given tournament the quarterfinal Final clues are not exactly calibrated to be of equal difficulty, but rather, lie along a more binomial distribution, and thus, that making it to the quarterfinals on a wildcard has more to do with being in one of the lucky games with an easy Final. (Or if you don't mind I can just start editing the posts with that data, by the power vested in me.)

Has a wildcard player ever won the TOC?
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Michael Falk did in 2006, and it has probably happened a few other times. Given that the wagering situation is different from regular games in quarterfinal tournament games, when there are wild card spots up for grabs, it really isn't a huge thing when someone wins a J! tournament as a wild card.
