Pretty good Coryat score overall (22,800) but am I the only one that said "Sunset Boulevard" for FJ?

Did anyone else get hit with the negbait about the Mississippi state toy named for a President? I said Lincoln Logs instead of Teddy Bear. In hindsight, Lincoln is not popular in Mississippi and the Teddy Bear incident took place in Mississippi.

Lincoln Logs -- yes (and also "Wicked" for FJ) -- there were a few clues that could have led you down the primrose path today.
And far as I know, not mentioned here yet, but J! racked up Emmy No. 31 (Best Game Show) at the somewhat-raucous Daytime Emmys broadcast (banished to online-only this year) on Sunday night.

I seem to be known around here for using a lot of parentheses and forgetting to close one or two; so I did a Google image search for a lot of parentheses, and added a caption "use as required", for when I miss one again. We'll see how long I keep that avatar.xxaaaxx wrote: DH, what is that image? My eyes start doing barrel rolls whenever I look at it

I got "Spamalot" in my head for FJ and knew it couldn't have made $1B, but I couldn't get it out of my head long enough to come up with "The Lion King". Lots of musicals were swirling around in my head, but not that one. Alison impressed me with that correct wager. With that kind of saavy she might might around for a while. James was a very smart contestant, but the constant uptalk on choosing categories was bugging me so much I couldn't root for him.
What, no love for the Gillian Anderson, the beautiful redhead from the X-files? I also picked up Trash with Cornelius Vanderbilt. I've been to Biltmore House in Asheville, NC many times, and have absorbed some of Vanderbilt history while there.

Good close game today. For those commenting on wagering, I believe that it had been noted last week that the episodes that are now airing had been taped during or after Arthur's run, so the topic of FJ wagering strategy, particularly wagering for the tie, must've been a popular one with the contestants at the time.
I had one of those games where everything was getting stuck on the tip of my tongue, just couldn't get several of them out quickly enough. I am off work today, so I watched this episode at 8am instead of my usual 6-7pm--wonder if that is the reason my brain felt slower. Anyone else have the experience of being more/less functional at different times of day? For me, if I haven't watched by about 9pm, I usually won't try to watch any later than that because I know I won't be focusing as intently. Thought I'd be better in the morning.
A couple of examples of brain disconnect: I said "avioli" (is that some sort of new pasta?) instead of "alveoli"; Budapest instead of Bucharest. Felt completely frozen on Alphabetically Last, except picked up LT September. Pre-called "Laos". Also pre-called "lees", knowing it now from several hundred games of Scramble with Friends, but didn't know the definition and clammed when it came up.
I'm another who said "The Producers" for FJ, and was really pleased that I was even able to come up with a recent Broadway show that had been based on a movie, since Broadway is definitely not one of my strongest categories. Guess maybe my morning caffeine had kicked in by the end of the show. Yeah, "The Lion King" makes more sense for $1B.

Gillian Anderson graduated from my high school. I was going to say her, since she was the only person on the X-Files I knew of, but clammed instead. Sigh.

I started out with The Producers because it was the first (successful) one I could think of made out of a movie. (And if anyone wants to be a [jerk] and claim PTO is based on a movie, I'll fight you over it!). But then I figured it wasn't that successful, and I started thinking of other long-running plays, and went immediately to The Lion King.Leander wrote:Not an instaget FJ, but I couldn't come up with any other show currently running that was based on a movie. Plus, knowing how popular Lion King is and the use of super premium pricing for preferred seats, hitting a billion seemed not unreasonable.
BTW, I saw the touring version of that a couple of years ago. The only thing I find more amazing than how the play is staged is the fact they can actually take the dang thing on the road!
I don't know about the "Teddy Bear incident," but Lincoln was definitely not popular among the majority in Mississippi, which is why it was a one-party (southern) Democratic state until the early 1970s, because the Republicans were "The Party of Lincoln." This flipped when the Democrats became "The Party of the Civil Rights Act" among other things.silverscreentest wrote:Did anyone else get hit with the negbait about the Mississippi state toy named for a President? She had some mentions in previous posts in the thread. NBC liked her using her not only in Hannibal, but also in Crisis. Hannibal is not a show made for binge watching, xxaaaxx, although you are lucky that a 2-season catch-up for you is "only" 26 episodes and you have until next spring to do it. The show is not for everyone and I was quite surprised it was renewed for a third season. It must do well overseas?jeopardyhopeful wrote:

The truth is right here! This "X-Files" star played Hannibal Lecter's psychiatrist
I can see how the clue could have stumped the players. One of the movies or the NBC show? Gillian Anderson or Annabeth Gish? Oh, wait the clue did not even narrow it down to the women. We could have had a David Duchovny or Robert Patrick.

It doesn't even seem to use the proper tense. As best I can tell, she still plays the role.MarkBarrett wrote:The truth is right here! This "X-Files" star played Hannibal Lecter's psychiatrist

Surprised anyone said Spider-man when that was a pretty high-profile flop. I remember reading it could run for years and years and still never turn a profit based on its ridiculously troubled production. Is that true?

I assumed that she said Spiderman as a joke after not coming up with anything reasonable. For myself, I had just seen a community theater production of Shrek so it was the first movie turned into musical that came to mind, then I wondered if Wicked fit the stipulation, and then I locked onto The Lion King as it's well known for being long running.

It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a parallel novel of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum's 1900 classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Re: Monday, June 23, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Wicked (the musical) is based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995), which is itself based upon the L. Frank Baum book series (now in public domain), as was last year's movie Oz: The Great and Powerful. Since the Judy Garland movie is still under copyright, that isn't (officially) the source.dhkendall wrote:Ummm, Wizard of Oz????This Is Kirk! wrote:It was mine, too, then I thought "hold on, Wicked isn't based on a movie" but it was too late. Re: Monday, June 23, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Wicked (the play) was based on the book of the same title. The book was based on the world of Oz that L. Frank Baum created, which is markably different from the world of any of the Oz movies. Maguire did extensive research into the books. The play was in no way based on a movie.dhkendall wrote:Ummm, Wizard of Oz????This Is Kirk! wrote:It was mine, too, then I thought "hold on, Wicked isn't based on a movie" but it was too late. P.S. knowing a little bit about the Oz books might just help you out in a future game on this board...

I did the same thing. Had no idea what state the "teddy bear" incident took place in.silverscreentest wrote:Did anyone else get hit with the negbait about the Mississippi state toy named for a President? This is exactly why I WAGged Duchovny. (No, I haven't seen a second of the X-Files in my life.)MarkBarrett wrote:I can see how the clue could have stumped the players. I have about 50 of those per week, on average. At least mine are mostly relegated to Jeopardy! — my mom has a frustrating tendency to stop mid-sentence because her mind and mouth have gone off in totally separate directions, and I have to keep prodding her to finish her #@!*$ sentence. Seriously, how can you blank out on a word like "keys"?TheyCallMeMrKid wrote:I had one of those games where everything was getting stuck on the tip of my tongue, just couldn't get several of them out quickly enough.
