The Declaration of Independence
The first official use of this 4-word term is at the Declaration's beginning, immediately after "The Thirteen".
Shloka Ananthanarayanan: $20,400-$20,000=$400
Howard Ray: $19,600+$10,600...now a 1-day champion with $30,200
Jill Rowley: $8,800-$2,000=$6,800

Spoiler
What is "United States of America"? Jill said "to be s"; Shloka said "The Bill of Rights".

Please tell me I'm not the only one who got the reference on the last two categories in J!
How the heck did I put Charleston in the wrong Carolina?! Oh well, Howard put Raleigh in the wrong state.
Anyone else disappointed that "Auto-Tune" was not a self-demonstrating clue?
Scalawag was my only miss in "Wag", and I didn't have to WAG on the other four.
Herstory was my only 0/5 in J! What led to India on $200, and how should I know that what's-her-face was the mom of Mary Shelley?
I didn't get the joke in Canyucks for $1600. Explain?
Poll was my only miss in Beastly. Couldn't wrap my head around what "recording opinions" meant.
Almost instaget. Colonies is only one word, but all thirteen of those are now states… United States of America. Easy, but I can see how one could overthink it.

Instaget FJ. I don't remember the exact wording of the DoI (guess I'll brush up on that), but it's the only thing that made any sense to me. No idea why it was a single get.

Pandit is a South Asian name, which should have at least led you in the right direction. I suspect the second one is "know it or don't."TenPoundHammer wrote:

Canucks = Canadians. Yuks=laughs. Jeopardy humor!I didn't get the joke in Canyucks for $1600. Explain?
Great game today. The champ looks exactly like my high school history teacher - though it was him for a moment.
Lach trash: Scalawag, Isaac Bashevis Singer. Read all his stories for children when I was a kid.
Got FJ after a few seconds. "Ok, so it's not United States...oh right, duh?"

No, I meant the "jury's out on science" line on the $1600 clue specifically. The category name itself I got.zakharov wrote:Canucks = Canadians. Yuks=laughs. Jeopardy humor!

Perhaps they over thought it? I came up with United States of America almost instantly and spent the next 25 seconds second-guessing myself because I thought it seemed too easy.econgator wrote:That was Kids Week. How did 2 of 3 miss it?

When Alex shows the category as the Dec of Ind, he says something to the effect of "how appropriate for this day", when today is not 7/4, it's 7/1. Alex forgot the show would air on Canada Day Howard probably should have wagered less than $2K in FJ! to keep Jill out of contention, with the scores 8800-20400-19600 going into FJ!. But he wagered $10600 and won on a sole get.

Oh sorry, I can't read. I think it's just that Alex and the contestant are fans of Arrested Development.TenPoundHammer wrote:No, I meant the "jury's out on science" line on the $1600 clue specifically. The category name itself I got.zakharov wrote:Canucks = Canadians. Yuks=laughs. Jeopardy humor!

I was rooting for Jill again. Sad to see her go. I think she only missed one of her responses in the first two rounds, like yesterday. But it was a $2000 and cost her being locked out of first place at the end of DJ. I knew it was Mike Meyer, and not Dana Carvey.
In the end she got FJ wrong and would have lost if she had had enough and bet to pass 1st place.

I came up with it after spending 5-10 seconds trying to think of something more challenging.CrunchyTaco wrote:I came up with United States of America almost instantly and spent the next 25 seconds second-guessing myself because I thought it seemed too easy.

I thought (wrongly) that you didn't identifiy yourselves as the United States of America until the Constitution. So I said "a more perfect union", which is from the Constitution. Blast!

Seemed like an easy board to me today, probably just good categories for me, but beat my previous best Coryat by 5000, and basically instaget in FJ. Don't know the DoI by heart, but felt pretty sure when it came to mind.
Precalled TS scalawag.

I was unaware the term was in the Declaration of Independence but could not think of anything else.DHicton wrote:I thought (wrongly) that you didn't identifiy yourselves as the United States of America until the Constitution. So I said "a more perfect union", which is from the Constitution. Blast!
Actually, when Alex said the category was appropriate for today, I said I was amazed to learn Canada had a Declaration of Independence.

Once again a horrible wager by 2nd that comes up smelling roses.
Could have easily bet to pass 1st while still keeping 3rd locked out.
(FJ easy, just visited Independence Hall on Sunday.)
