CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Jen Fiero is from Jackson, Michigan and in her spare time has what I would consider to be a great job.
Jen: Oh, yeah, I work at a winery, a small local winery in Jackson. So, uh, I started working in their tasting room about four years ago. So I get to taste all kinds of awesome wines and I serve --
Alex: Now what kind of wines is Michigan known for?
Jen: Um, primarily Rieslings, and other sort of, uh, sweeter wines, But the German grapes grow really well in Michigan.
Alex: Okay, good, the cold weather helps, doesn't it?
Jen: Mm-hmm.
Alex: Pete Gittens, bad news for you. I erred a little while ago in accepting a more specific or asking you for a more specific on the rock lobster because "rock" was in the category...
Pete: Sure.
Alex: ...and had to come up. So we gotta take away money from you.
You're at $800 now, not $2,000. Now you're a pinball junkie.
Pete: I am.
Alex: Are there still pinball machines out there?
Pete: They are few and far between, but if you keep your eye out you can find a few places that still have 'em. They don't really make any
new ones anymore. So you kinda gotta really look hard to find the ones.
Alex: Yeah, do you push it a little and bounce against the table --
Pete: Well, that's --that's the name of the game.
Alex: Yeah?
Pete: You gotta --you gotta give it a little --so --there's --the tilt is built in there for a reason.
Alex: Uh-huh, okay. It brings back a lot of memories for me.
Alex: Campbell Warner is a military attorney who's about to be
transferred where?
Campbell: Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Alex: Now does this mean you're a defense attorney or a prosecuting attorney or do you get any say in that?
Campbell: You do get some say. The army asks you where you would like to go and they tell you if the job's available. And the senior defense attorney, called a senior defense council job, was available at Fort Jackson, so I took that. And it's been good so far, but it's coming after four years as a prosecutor so I've had to go to the other side of the aisle so it's been a --
Alex: You had to go after four years as a prosecutor?
Campbell: Didn't have to but it means going from the prosecution side
to the defense side so it's a completely different way of thinking but it's been fun so far.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Pete found the Daily Double on the 21st clue. Campbell had $2,600, Pete had $2,400, and Jen was at $3,800. Pete made it a True Daily Double, wagering $2,400.
GEOGRAPHICAL HISTORY $600: In the late 1800s Boers in the Dorsland Trek crossed this desert from the Transvaal to Angola

[Initially ruled correct but reversed during commercial break. Alex should not have asked for more specific information. The word "rock" was in the category name.]
GEOGRAPHICAL HISTORY $400: This persecuted group fled England in 1609 & lived in the Netherlands for 11 years before crossing the Atlantic
(Pete: Who are the Puritans?)
(Alex: Be more specific.)

Campbell: Wager $11,801 to cover Pete.
Pete: You're faced with a legitimate choice in strategy. Jen: You ought to try wagering between $3,001 and $4,600. This will top a $0 wager by Pete while still beating Campbell and Pete on the Triple Stumper (should Campbell wager to cover Pete's doubled score and Pete wager to cover your doubled score).

All three players played well (two of them up until FJ), with a very good get by Jen in FJ. Congrats to Jen on her win.
Picked up Lach trash: "Pilgrims", "salmonella", "The Doctor Is In", "Evita"
Didn't get FJ. Guessed "sweet" instead.

Wasn't there a relatively recent Jeopardy clue to do with ether and its formula? I think that was the way I puzzled out the answer.

Re: Thursday, July 10, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I missed "Rock Lobster" because I didn't know it was an actual lobster! I just thought it was a song.
I had a very good game, especially the DJ round (11 out of 12 in the bottom two rows there), so naturally I missed FJ.
Sometimes these clues are frustrating when they don't click. I knew it was going to be a word I had heard of, but nothing was coming to me.
I wrote down "saccharine" just to have something. I suppose it's an adjective that can be used in chemical and non-chemical contexts, but otherwise it didn't really fit and I wasn't expecting it to be right.
When "ethereal" was revealed, I instantly knew it was right. (I don't think I was ever consciously aware that "ethereal" was related to "ether", but it makes sense.)
Thirty seconds isn't a lot of time. And when there are three hints, it's hard to know which one to pay more attention to. Maybe if I had concentrated just on "heavenly", I might have got there.

Didn't know what the formula for ether was, so I went to organic chemistry: meth-,eth-, prop-, but- ... ummmm ... beautific? bucolic? Yeah, I got nothing.

Holy potatoes this was a good game! Congrats to Campbell on the run!
This was an enjoyable board, but not one that played to my strengths.
I would have bet all but a few dollars on the "Captain Morgan" DD. Luckily I was able to tease that one out.
I had no idea on FJ. I don't recall a FJ clue on ether, but I may have already forgotten. All I could think of were "fragile"and "divine," and I went with the former knowing full well that both were wrong.

FJ got me too, good one by Jen. Picked up Lachlan Trash: rock lobster, pilgrims (on the BMS), Captain Kidd & British Virgin Islands.

Frustrating. I had FJ but couldn't quite come up with the exact word. I kept repeating "Etheral" to myself and responding, "that doesn't sound right!". Off by one letter is still wrong.

I thought Pilgrims was pretty obvious also.
'Jack Daniels' seemed over valued at $1000.
Better than average board for me tonight. I did not get FJ though.
Nice work by the lady to come up with it for the win.
And an unusual tie for 2nd place. When was the last time that happened?
Second day in a row we had a bartender as a contestant.

Thanks! Organic chemistry gets me one more time. Now everybody knows why I went from pre-med to pre-law.econgator wrote:Good game, Campbell, but it just wasn't to be today.
Didn't know what the formula for ether was, so I went to organic chemistry: meth-,eth-, prop-, but- ... ummmm ... beautific? bucolic? Yeah, I got nothing.
Congrats to Jen for crushing it on FJ!

For some reason I managed to come up with "etheric" but not "ethereal" on FJ. Any guesses on whether this would have been accepted?

I believe that "Pilgrims" was wrong and "Puritans" should have been accepted. The clue referred to the group that was persecuted. The persecuted group were Puritans. They didn't become "pilgrims" until they left on their "pilgrimage."NoName84 wrote:Separatists instead of Pilgrims; judges?
What do you all think? I don't think it would have affected the final outcome, as it was.

There was a clue late in DJ that Jen and the bartender both guessed wrong and I was saying, "Stay clam Cambell, stay clam"
Good job staying clam on that one.

If Jen had missed, there would have been a 3-way tie at 3,600.

Instaget FJ - I didn't know the formula, but thought "delicate...heavenly...something chemical...must be ethereal."

Interesting. I hadn't jotted the wagers down as I do most of the time. (no DVR)BuzzerBattleBill wrote:If Jen had missed, there would have been a 3-way tie at 3,600.
Both challengers must have used some intellegent strategy. That's a pleasant change from what's been going on in the last month.
