Game Recap for Show #6944, 2014-11-20

2014 Tournament of Champions final game 1.

CONTESTANTS
Julia Collins, a 20-time Jeopardy! champion from Kenilworth, Illinois
Arthur Chu, a compliance analyst, voiceover artist, and blogger from Broadview Heights, Ohio
Ben Ingram, an IT consultant originally from Florence, South Carolina

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Ben was not mouthing, "I love you" to me. That was for someone else. Let me begin today's program with a little bit of background information for all of you. In their original appearances on Jeopardy!, Julia, Arthur, and Ben won a total of 39 games and about $700,000 in prize money, which means they're good. And at the end of tomorrow's program, one of them will win an additional $250,000. So good luck. Let's have fun. Here we go--the Jeopardy! Round. One Daily Double coming up in one of these categories...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
TODAY'S MUSIC (5/5)
WEBSITES FOR WOMEN (5/5)
BOOKS & ARTHURS (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
HOMOPHONIC PAIRS (4/5)
COUNTRY BY STATE (5/5) (Alex: We'll give you the state.)
-GRAMS (5/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS

Ben: 12 R, 1 W
Julia: 4 R, 0 W

Clues revealed: 30

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Arthur found the Daily Double on the 11th clue. Ben had $2,600, Arthur had $2,400, and Julia was at $2,000. Arthur made it a True Daily Double, wagering $2,400.

BOOKS & ARTHURS $800: Chapter 1 of this 1889 novel begins "'Camelot--Camelot...I don't seem to remember hearing of it before.'"

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Ben: $4,600
Arthur: $4,000
Julia: $2,000

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Last week on the program, one of our quarterfinalists, Rani, mentioned that with her winnings, she managed to knock a few items off her bucket list. Travel is also a subject that comes up a lot in terms of bucket lists, but you want a little further than most, Julia. Tell us about that.

Julia: I did. Well, as we talked about when I was on the show before, I wasn't working when I was originally on, and then I had this incredible cash windfall, and I thought, "I should do something that I would never, ever do otherwise," and so I rented an apartment in Paris and stayed there for a month. And it was fantastic. Who doesn't love Paris?

Alex: Oh, yes, indeed.

Alex: All right, Arthur Chu. Ken Jennings--he interviewed you.

Arthur: Yeah, for Slate.

Alex: When and what were the circumstances?

Arthur: He did an e-mail interview with me for Slate, and this was when a lot of people were talking about, you know, my appearances on the show and comparing me to him, and so we sort of bonded over the fact that we both attracted some negative attention when we were on the show. He said that people called him a hall monitor, and so that's why his LLC is Hall Monitor Productions.

Alex: I see, and what do they call you?

Arthur: Oh, I can't repeat that on the air.

[Laughter]

Alex: Okay. All right.

Alex: Ben Ingram was an eight-time champion. You bought a piece of furniture for your home, but a special one.

Ben: Bought a bed.

Alex: You did not have a bed before?

Ben: I had a bed, but it was a little, single one, and my goal was to get second place the first time out so that I could have enough to just buy a run-of-the-mill mattress--a new one. But instead, I won as much as I did somehow, and I just went to the mattress store, I just said, "Look, I don't want to bargain, I don't want to dicker, just give me the most expensive thing you have."

[Laughter]

Alex: And they did?

Ben: They did.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
HOMOPHONIC PAIRS $1000: A timely, up-to-date small dried fruit
(Arthur: What is...a date date?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Arthur: $8,400
Ben: $6,400
Julia: $2,400

DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
PAINT BY YEARS (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
SUBATOMIC (5/5)
YOU MUST BE CONFUSED (5/5)
1940s TELEVISION (5/5)
INITIALS TO ROMAN NUMERALS TO NUMBERS II (4/5, including 1 correct Daily Double) (Alex: Now, a bit of an explanation. The players all, obviously, know what that category's all about. I'll give you an example. If we said, "French bag maker", that would be Louis Vuitton. We take the letters LV, and that translates to what number? 55.)
THE RECKONING (5/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Arthur: 16 R, 0 W
Julia: 9 R (including 2 DDs), 1 W
Ben: 4 R (including 1 rebound), 0 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 1
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $2,000

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Julia snagged the next Daily Double on the 6th clue. Ben had $6,400, Arthur had $11,200, and Julia was at $4,400. Julia made it a True Daily Double, wagering $4,400.

INITIALS TO ROMAN NUMERALS TO NUMBERS II $1600: For the judge best known for the 1994 O.J. Simpson case

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Julia who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 13th clue. Ben had $7,200, Arthur had $14,800, and Julia was at $10,800. Julia wagered $5,000.

PAINT BY YEARS $1600: 1577:
Shortly after his arrival in Spain, this foreign-born man paints his "Assumption of the Virgin"

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
INITIALS TO ROMAN NUMERALS TO NUMBERS II $2000: For the American who in 1964 founded Muslim Mosque, Inc.

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Arthur: $25,600
Julia: $18,200
Ben: $12,800

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
20th CENTURY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Arthur: Wager $10,801 to cover Julia.
Julia: You ought to wager to cover Ben, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings by betting all $18,200. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $7,400 (to shut out Ben) or less than $3,400 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Ben). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Arthur.
Ben: Seeing as you don't have enough money to win on a Triple Stumper (you will lose by at least $2,000), you might try betting $5,401, playing for a win if Julia tries to two-thirds Arthur (though, from this position, a wager of all $12,800 is acceptable and perhaps preferred as it forces Julia to cover you).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
In this year, there were no presidents or vice presidents running, but 3 of the 4 men on the 2 major party ballots would become president

FINAL SCORES
Ben: $12,800 + $12,800 = $25,600 (What is 1920?)
Julia: $18,200 - $11,800 = $6,400 (What is 1952?)
Arthur: $25,600 - $10,000 = $15,600 (What is 1936?1932)
(Alex: This was a tough one. James Middleton Cox was the only one of the four who never became a president.)
...
(Alex: [after revealing Ben's response] That year, the other three were Harding, Coolidge, and FDR. You are right.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $3,000

GAME DYNAMICS

If I have to fight, I can never play somebody else's game... -- Barry Gibb

All three contestants are doing well playing Jeopardy! their own way. I'm cheering for Jackhammer Julia, so I was elated when her TDD was an easy question.

FJ was tough. It required concentration and eliminating an alternate year which was partially correct (1960) but I came up with 1920 in time. Here's hoping Julia can recover tomorrow from her big bet.

I'm probably going to have to miss the last two games of the ToC. I allowed my wife and son to talk me in to switching our phone TV internet from Verizon/DirecTV to Comcast. They partially hooked us up Tuesday, when they came today to finish, they told my wife a bunch of stuff that they hadn't before (and frankly their customer disservice lived up to its reputation when I called yesterday) she told them to cancel.

So now we've got no TV or internet at home, not sure about the home phone. Last time I let my wife talk me into anything.

That was crazy. It was like watching Ken/Brad/Roger all over again.

1952 actually was not the worst guess in the world since President Truman didn't run, nor did Vice President Barkley, but then as I was sorting it out, I came up with 1920 relatively quickly, though 1952 was the first to pop into my head.

After Julia's FJ was wrong and they revealed her wager, Ben was shaking his head and talking to himself. With my admittedly poor lip reading skills, it seemed he said "bad job, bad job" as if he was expressing disapproval of her.

Damn, just what a ballsy FJ bet by Ben.

Can't remember the last time the CC before the first break was like >$10,000. All three of them were on fire.

If memory serves, Michael Falk coming back to beat Vik Vaz in the 2006 ToC finals is either the biggest comeback or close to it. The archive confirms that he was down by 13,400 on day 1, so Arthur still has a shot

There's no real spot for general ToC discussion, so I'm going to leave this here: if you have not been reading out #fakeToC2014 tweets on Twitter, you're missing out.

I had a long choir practice and we went out for pizza afterward, so I saw DJ! first. I'll post about the J! round when I see it.

No matter how hard I try, my mind refuses to remember what L and D are in Roman numerals. I could've gotten David Cameron's name in time, and I knew Lance Ito's name right away, but I wasn't going to be able to convert either to numbers.

I should've run that 1940's TV category, but Madison Square seemed too easy at $1,200, and I was blanking on Berle and Funt.

Subatomic was a category that I marked as an 0/5 as soon as it came up. Felt Reckoning would be the same, but I at least knew Rasputin even if I couldn't pull it in time.

3/4 became president? Gotta be when Nixon was on the ballot as a veep? That was... um, I dunno, 1952? 1920 wasn't coming, as I get incredibly rusty on any president before FDR.

Full points for trying, though (and the only reason 1952 is wrong is because only 2 of the 4 became President).

All three players did well (before FJ), with Ben having an impressive sole get of FJ. I got 27 clues correct, but guessed 1960 for FJ.

26 right.

Music- 2; Women- 2; Books- 4; Pairs- 2; State- 2; Grams- 1
Paint- 2; Atom- 0; Confuse- 1; 1940's- 3; Roman- 3; Reckon- 4

No Lach trash.

I did not get FJ in the time allotted, but when Alex said James Cox I knew it was 1920. Still 0-for in this TOC's FJs and Ben's still perfect overall in FJ's.
