CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Derek Schuld is a chef from Wisconsin. Traveling can be a problem sometimes. I understand you were once on safari in Kenya, and you and a friend decided to do something... not so smart.
Derek: That's right. There--there was--our class was divided up into, like, small groups on buses, and we came across a male lion just resting in the savanna, and my friend decided that wasn't good enough and wanted an action photo, so he started throwing pebbles. And the lion swatted 'em away, swatted 'em away--eventually had enough, I guess, and got up and started charging the bus.
Alex: Aha.
Derek: And the driver and all of us were not too thrilled with that, so...
Alex: Leave them alone. It's a good thing that you were still on the bus. If you had gotten out on foot, it might have had--
Derek: They wouldn't let us out.
Alex: --dire consequences.
Alex: Kathleen Schultz from Portland, Oregon... I would like you--I'm a big fan of tiramisu, and I understand you have a special recipe, so...
Kathleen: I do.
Alex: Tell--tell me about that.
Kathleen Well, it's very simple, but it requires Kahlua.
Alex: Thank you!
Kathleen: And one year, um, I had my 21-year-old son do that part of it, the coffee and Kahlua...
Alex: Mm-hmm.
Kathleen: And he used a little too much Kahlua, and we got the donors very tipsy.
Alex: And, uh, did they contribute, uh, a little more than usual?
Kathleen: No, 'cause they'd already paid. We just had to pour lots of espresso down 'em to get 'em home.
Alex: Oh, okay.
Alex: Jason Keller is a tutor. He is our champion, and he--one of his claims to fame, folks, is something you would never guess. You have been mistaken for which semi-famous person?
Jason: Zulu, Queen of the Dwarf People.
[Laughter]
Alex: Who is Zulu, Queen of the Dwarf People?
Jason: Uh, at least as I understand, I'm a fan of the Golden Girls, and it was a name that Sophia used on one episode, uh, when she was checking in to a hospital, and, uh... and, uh, Rose was taking her name, and she sarcastically said, "Zulu, Queen of the Dwarf People," and it ended up on her bracelet.
Alex: Okay. Good.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Kathleen found the Daily Double on the 23rd clue. Jason had $7,400, Kathleen had $4,400, and Derek was at $800. Kathleen wagered $2,000.
DOCTOR, LAWYER, NATIVE AMERICAN LEADER $600: In 2009 she became Solicitor General of the U.S., arguing cases before the Supreme Court
(Kathleen: Who is... uh... Sotomayor?)
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jason: $9,200
Kathleen: $4,400
Derek: $1,800

Derek: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

Seriously? New York City + circle + "named for an Italian explorer" for $2000, let alone a Daily Double at that level????

People can't do math. Jason overbid by $200 (and, interestingly, offered the tie), and Kathleen overbid by $300. It was very strange indeed. You could tell Jason realized his mistake and thought he had lost.Samer wrote: ETA: OK . . . what the heck happened there in FJ!?
I got the point of the FJ! clue but couldn't come up with the building.

Hey, (anything in the US) + "named for an Italian explorer" ... I did not know there was a Columbus circle in New York, but what else could it be?Samer wrote:Seriously? New York City + circle + "named for an Italian explorer" for $2000, let alone a Daily Double at that level????
I didn't get the point of (lots of sides) = (looks like a circle). (Once again, how does that math degree help my life?) Once Alex mentioned the circle part I almost got to Globe before he said it. Somehow I was thinking there must be a building they called the dodecagon or something but then they found some extra walls (I know, this makes no sense at all...)lisa0012 wrote:I got the point of the FJ! clue but couldn't come up with the building.

$10800 would have been offering the tie from Jason's perspective.lisa0012 wrote:People can't do math. Jason overbid by $200 (and, interestingly, offered the tie), and Kathleen overbid by $300. I don't think it's that Kathleen can't do math. Rather, I think she wasn't thinking and just decided to make a wager that would still guarantee she finished ahead of Derek if he doubled up, instead of thinking about where Jason would end up if he missed. Funny to think that if that theory is true, and Derek had had $200 more, she would have won.
A fascinating FJ. Plenty of extra information - almost round, no longer exists, 1599 - but I couldn't pull it out. Props to anyone who did! I'm really keen to see the stats on this one at week's end.

Re: Monday, December 19, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I realize that, that's why I'm not sure why he bid $200 over, I meant that he didn't do the extra dollar. So maybe he meant to go over and therefore didn't need the extra dollar, and wasn't offering? I'd love to hear from either one of them on what happened.goforthetie wrote:$10800 would have been offering the tie from Jason's perspective.lisa0012 wrote:People can't do math. Re: Monday, December 19, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I'm going to presume that he wasn't trying to offer a tie, and figured that an extra 1 dollar vs an extra 200 would make no difference. $11000 was nice and round. Good thing he wasn't tempted to go $11111!lisa0012 wrote:I realize that, that's why I'm not sure why he bid $200 over, I meant that he didn't do the extra dollar. Re: Monday, December 19, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
FJ had me stumped for a good 20 seconds, before a second hard look at the date (Shakespearean era) + imagining an icosagon (almost-round) got me to the right answer with time to sapre.
Those were very strange wagers. I was just about ready to congratulate Kathleen on not suicidally betting it all, and she STILL managed to overwager, by concentrating on locking out Derek instead of staying ahead of Jason. :sigh: Someday...
I couldn't contain my disgust when I saw that. I blurted out a few curse words and spent the next few seconds staring daggers at the screen. I often complain about overvalued clues, sometimes to the point of nitpicking, but WTF J! writers!?Samer wrote:Seriously? The Parthenon certainly pre-dates 1599. Seemed as though this game would be a lock when he had $23K with less than half the DJ! round over with.

Between the country names and New York, I'd have been tempted to Roger those DD's if I hit 'em and go true on both of them (both of which were instagets). I had to back this one up to see what the scores were before the bets. I knew something was really, really strange there.

I can't believe everyone's reaction to this FJ clue- it's epidemic! We're all seeing it about the same.
Never has a clue presented itself to me like this, an "insta-know" but a "barely get." "It's a theatre, Shakespeare was performed there, nearly roundish, you KNOW this what's its damned name??" I was able to come up with it moments before the think music stopped.

If ever there were a time for a Hunker Bet (i.e. second-place player bets to guarantee a win in the case the leader makes a cover bet and misses the clue), this were it.lisa0012 wrote:... Kathleen overbid by $300. It was very strange indeed. You could tell Jason realized his mistake and thought he had lost.
QFT. I floundered and the best I could come up with was Dome of the Rock. That's off by a few centuries, but the structure surrounding the dome is octagonal. So I like to think that guess was at least in the ballpark. (Like maybe the left field bleachers.)lisa0012 wrote:I got the point of the FJ! clue but couldn't come up with the building.

Not quite a "liederkrantz" clue, the cheese is one that very few people have heard of at all, whereas the Globe Theatre is common, the clue just wasn't leading you to it. (Personally, I think that if "England" was added in there somewhere, myself and a bunch of other boardies, as well as at least one of the contestants, would have got it. Maybe that's why it was omitted, dunno.)thenextofken wrote:Had no clue on the final---I'll think about it tonight over a plate of liederkrantz.
Love the term. I'll sign your petition to get it added to board lexicon.Budphrey wrote:If ever there were a time for a Hunker Bet (i.e. second-place player bets to guarantee a win in the case the leader makes a cover bet and misses the clue), this were it.

I would have loved to see Jason and Kathleen duke it out again. I was impressed that she scrambled back into contention, but so disappointed by a triple stumper FJ. Nice to see players attack the board like that, devouring the clues.

Okay, I'll share what I did on the Columbus DD just to give a non-traveling west coast perspective. Italian explorer? Vespucci? If I had been a show player I would like to think I would have taken my time to get Columbus. I have never heard of Vespucci Circle and even here have at least heard of Columbus Circle. The visual portion was not going to do anything for me. I need to pay more attention when watching Celebrity Apprentice?
The Greece DD was more for me since I precalled Hellas.
Nice run by Jason to open the match, but Kathleen played him fairly evenly discounting the DDs. I have them each at 21200 Coryat (how rare must it be for two players over 20K?) and the combined was an impressive 50,600.
The FJ clue had me struggling to find something that fit. I wrote Pantheon to have something on the paper, but 1599 was of course an eliminating fact. The year had me out of the U.S. and Europe seemed like a good place to go. The Colosseum and Tower of Pisa were no gos. I'm not sure I would have figured out The Globe with 30 hours time. Anything 1564-1616 might be a good rule of thumb to check on Shakespeare in the future.
Even Alex's extra remarks before revealing the correct response had me just as confused. This clue has to be in the teens for solve percentage on the poll is my instinct.
