CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Carly Shevinsky is a lab tech from Southern California. And while camping in Sequoia National Park, you experienced something that a lot of people who go to our national parks in the West experience. Tell us about that.

Carly: I hope not exactly. Uh, when I was younger, I went, uh, camping up there with my parents. We drove up there. We got there really late, and so we didn't know--first thing you're supposed to do is put all your food in the bear boxes.

Alex: Yes.

Carly: So, we went, we set up our tent. We get back to the car, and there's a bear inside of our car. It had peeled back the driver's-side door and crawled in and got all the way to the back. And, we tried to open--it noticed, and it crawled back out.

Alex: No harm, no foul, though?

Carly: It got a bag of marshmallows, and it wrecked our car door, but...

Alex: Did it try to drive away?

[Chuckles]

Carly: No, thank goodness.

Alex: Okay.

Alex: Bert Ifill--semiretired educator. Met his wife at what?

Bert: Well, actually, my wife is a choral conductor--cantate chamber singers. And I had met her as a baritone sitting on the front row. Uh, we were probably friends first, obviously, and I really loved the way she conducted, and she was a brilliant musician, and we became fiancés a little bit later, and we've been married now for five years.

Alex: All right.

Alex: And Allison Fraser is our champion. She is from Alexandria, Virginia. And in college, you got a little adventurous. You went to Scotland all by yourself...

Allison: I did, yes.

Alex: ...and climbed Scotland's highest peak.

Allison: I did, which--it's not actually--it's nothing compared to Mt. Everest--

Alex: I know.

Allison: --but it's very rugged. The top is shrouded in clouds, and there's actually a memorial up there for all the people who died on the mountain, so that was a little intimidating seeing that.

Alex: And the name of it, so that people will know what to avoid?

Allison: Yes. Ben Nevis.

Alex: Ben Nevis. Yes, indeed.

Allison: Beautiful, though.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Carly found the Daily Double on the 24th clue. Allison had $3,600, Bert had $5,400, and Carly was at $2,000. Carly made it a True Daily Double, wagering $2,000.

THE OLD WEST $800: He was appointed sherrif of Lincoln County, New Mexico in 1880 & spent the next 20 years in & out of law enforcement
(Carly: Uh... who is Bean?)
(Alex: Mm. No, no. Not Judge Roy Bean. Who was [*]? [*]. Less than a minute to go now, Carly.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
PAGING ALL PRIMATES $1000: A gorilla kept at a mall narrates "The One and Only" him

TIME FOR A MAJOR PRO CHAMPIONSHIP! $400: May:
Open-wheel racing

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Bert: $7,000
Allison: $3,600
Carly: $1,000

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Allison snagged the next Daily Double on the 8th clue. Allison had $4,000, Bert had $12,600, and Carly was at $1,000. Allison made it a True Daily Double, wagering $4,000.

MYTHOLOGY $800: During Odysseus' absence, she wove a never-finished shroud

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Bert who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 26th clue. Allison had $11,600, Bert had $13,800, and Carly was at $200. Bert wagered $2,000.

SANTA $2000: In the early 1980s an offensive by the FMLN severely damaged Santa Ana in this Central American country
(Bert: What is Guatemala?)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
SENATORS $800: In 1987 he took over Barry Goldwater's seat

ORIGINATOR OF THE ROLE $1200: Buffy from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"
(Bert: Who is Alicia Silverstone?)

MYTHOLOGY $1600: In Greek, here's the name of this gal, the personification of the dawn
(Bert: Who is Aurora?)

CLAUSE $800: (Jimmy of the Clue Crew shows a sentence on the monitor.) In this sentence, "'I'm home,' he said", "he said" is a reporting clause, meaning it identifies this
(Carly: What is the, um, pronoun?)

KEEP ON TRUCKIN' $800: To a trucker "hammer" & "granny" refer to these 2 types of highway lanes
(Bert: What is the right-hand lane?)

CLAUSE $1600: The simple sentence "I heard it through the grapevine." is also a main clause or this 4-syllable type of clause

(Bert: What is a jackknife?)
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Allison: $11,600
Bert: $10,200
Carly: $200

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
AMERICAN AUTHORS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
Allison: Wager $8,801 to cover Bert, but no more than $11,199 so as not to fall behind Carly's doubled score. If you're a fan of shoretegic wagering, you might risk $8,401.
Bert: Since you're within 4/5ths of Allison's score, you should wager between $2,801 (venusian) and $7,400 (martian), beating Allison's maximum safe bet of the difference between your scores.
Carly: Too bad for you, Carly, your score is less than Allison's score minus Bert's score. Unless they both commit an egregious wagering error, you've no hope of moving into first place. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Celebrated in April, National Robotics Week honors this man who coined the word "robotics" in a 1941 short story

FINAL SCORES
Carly: $200 + $0 = $200 (Who is Asimov?) (3rd place)
Bert: $10,200 + $5,500 = $15,700 (Who was Isaac Asimov) (2nd place)
Allison: $11,600 + $8,801 = $20,401 (Who was Isaac Asimov) (20501-day champion: $20,401)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $9,800

GAME DYNAMICS

Don't read the Sony description of the Hometown HOwdies at PLay Jeopardy's Youtube page if you don't what to know what I glean as a spoiler.
Spoiler
Fifteen lines with the names and hometowns are printed in the description of the video, with some repeated names. THis would indicate a spoiler as to what contestants play on what day and who wins the MOn-Thu episodes

Ran eBay, got all but Holbein in "Ho Ho Ho".

DJ! screwed me up severely. Took a lot of negs: Gellar for Swanson, dependent for subordinate, and jackknife for rollover.

I thought Hydra was by far the easiest in Mythology.

Truckin' for $400 flummoxed me because I was thinking pickup, not 18-wheeler.

NHO: About a Boy, and I don't recognize the name Hugh Grant either for that matter.

Hmm. Orwell or Clarke? Screw it, they're probably both wrong, I'm leaving this blank. Hey, look at that, they were both wrong, what a big freaking surprise. Asimov wouldn't have come to me in 30 hours, and I'm floored that this was a triple get.

Is there a reason why I should have heard of that first clue in They Originated the Role?

Also, the Indy 500 is not a championship. It's one race in the Indy Car season. I'm also accepting my alternate response of the Monaco Grand Prix. :)

This was a great competition between Allison and Bert. The three contestants' first-name initials were "A B C" from left to right. I got 27 clues correct including Indianapolis 500, speaker, fast lane/slow lane, rollover, and FJ.

To be pedantic, Isaac Asimov was not born in the United States, but in what was then the USSR and is now Russia. But he never learned Russian and came to the US at age 3.

I had no idea that Asimov was American. His Russian name scared me away and I went with Bradbury for FJ.

After LTAM, Alex said "four clues on the board still in play" which maybe wasted enough time to take one of them out of play. Boo!

Bert lost the game on jackknife. That was essentially a physics clue: speed, high center of gravity and centrifugal force equal roll over. Suprised at no rebound but Allison could not risk giving it back to Bert. Allison did remember Steiger in time for a big rebound earlier.

Speaker being TS was also key. Admittedly I was guessing but pretty obvious.

Pre-called Sante Fe and instagot FJ from the word robotics, neither too hard.

I was never aware of a second film version of In the Heat of the Night. Oh, now I realize Alex didn't explain that category quite clearly enough.

Seems like the educator could have been credited with " the left lane and the right lane" if Alex would have given him a BMS.

+1

Enjoyed this game and liked all three contestants. Even aside from FJ, I felt off my game--got a few negs and clams on things I should have known. Though I have no connection to the school, I always enjoy references to the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.

Was "championship" in the clue?
I don't consider it incorrect to say "Tom Sneva was the Indy 500 champion in 1983". Or "Al Unser Sr. was a four time Indy 500 champion".

I was reading about Čapek just earlier today, and also thought of him because I too forgot the category, but I realized that 1948 was far too late for him (I thought that RUR was from the 1930s, but even that was a little late) and "Robotics" (as in "The Four Laws of") got me to Asimov in enough time.
