Great wagering by our new champ! I'm guessing she precalled it to be a TS. (I'll bet it polls pretty low here too)

Literary Anagrams
Vivian Darkbloom, a minor character in a 1955 novel by this foreign-born author, is an anagram of his name.
Brandon Bidlack: $13,000-$9,801=$3,199
Andrea Keleher: $11,400-$10,000=$1,400
Gina Shaddox: $11,200-$200=$11,000...now a 1-day champion with $11,000

Spoiler
Who is Vladimir Nabokov? Gina and Andrea had no guess; Brandon had an indecipherable scrawl.

Her pathetic wager on the last DD sadly turned out to work in her favor.dhkendall wrote:Great wagering by our new champ!
Took about 5 to 7 seconds to shuffle the letters around for Nabokov.

I was just gonna say ... can we talk about that last DD bet as well? It seemed like she was aiming to fall to 3rd. I know it was a difficult scenario under tight timing, but really ... I was expecting a $100 wager.
Re: Thursday, March 19, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
NHO Dante's Peak and honestly never would've guessed volcano. Also NHO Children of Men. Not a fan of dystopia, which is why I never gave a rat's butt about Hunger Games.
Also never would've guessed on "top dressing" but it made sense in hindsight. Just overthought it. Got the next three in Lawn Care, then missed Loam.
Ran "G"ology, with Lach Trash on "goad" and "garble".
Michael Bay + script had me thinking something that could go wrong in a movie script.
Rats of NIMH? Woo, love that book. And movie. NHO "Lad: A Dog" or "Island of the Blue Dolphins". And still no Wainscott Weasel.
Can't say I've heard of an aftershock, at least not in the geological sense.
Lach Trash on "time-lapse" too. Got all but the DD in Hyphenated.
What led to "India" on Update for $400?
Loved the "cleavage" clue even though I didn't know it.
I didn't know what "dote on" meant so I was lost on Peas for $1600. Also clammed on the clover/shamrock coinflip under it since I knew I'd get it wrong. And for some reason I keep getting Mendel and Linneaus mixed up.
Pearl Jam was my only get in Group of Death. Metallica was the only other one of those bands that I recognized.
0/5 in 16th Century and Geology.
The name sounded vaguely familiar, but "Vivian Darkbloom" is just way too long to try to poke around with anagramming in 30 seconds. Anything longer than 10 letters is a metric buttload of work to try and anagram or find "Words contained within", IMO. I don't blame them for the TS here.

Pretty much an instaget FJ, but spent some time counting letters to make sure I was right.

It was not a difficult scenario, just bet so not to fall out of the lead. Or bet for the lock! But since she was not properly prepared, she defaulted to the standard useless round number.MitchO wrote:I was just gonna say ... can we talk about that last DD bet as well? As far as her FJ wager goes, since she's already in 3rd in a very tight game, she should have wagered enough to pass the leader should he wager $0. There is no downside to this. And at real speed I didn't think the returning champ wagered enough to cover a double up from 3rd, I could be wrong.
I'd bet tons of money she didn't have a clue about her FJ wager, just that she had zero confidence in the category.
No shame in not ciphering out that FJ in 30 seconds. With a scrabble background, I focused on the two V's which immediately leads to Russian authors.

Re: Thursday, March 19, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
This game was well-played by all three contestants up until FJ. Gina was ahead by $200 at the last clue in the second round, a DD, and I expected her to wager $199 or less, but her DD wager didn't prevent her from becoming the new champion. I had 39 correct responses including two triple stumpers: goad and time-lapse. I didn't get FJ; I couldn't think of any author's name that's an anagram of Vivian Darkbloom.

Re: Thursday, March 19, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Had I been in her situation at the DD, I would have bet
1.) Bet $100 and then correctly gotten Marlowe. (16th century isn't my strong suit but i happened to know that name)
2.) Wagered a shut out bet
3.) Stared blankly at the FJ question, coming in 3rd place.
But I would have wagered the same as her if I had been in 3rd place going into FJ, so... its a weird game.
I ran "G"-ology and the disaster movie category, and only clammed on Lad: A dog. The Jeopardy round was good to me

Re: Thursday, March 19, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I'd like to say I skillfully jumbled the letters around to come up with the right response, but I've been pretty lousy at anagrams lately. It just popped into my mind out of nowhere, with about 5 seconds to go. I'll take it.
I don't know how to feel about the outcome. I believe that contestants must be punished for wagering out of the lead on a last-clue DD for no good reason...yet she wagerd properly in FJ. That terrible DD wager put her in 3rd, which ended up helping her win the TS, instead of being in the lead and probably wagering to cover. Grumble grumble.

As opposed to this remake.

(Anyone have any idea why Pride & Prejudice seems to be such a popular target for niche audience remakes?)

I've noticed that when Jeopardy mentions a book written in 1955, it's always Lolita, and when it mentions a book written in 1897, it's always Dracula. Re: Thursday, March 19, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Joanna Newsom came up in a game that aried a few weeks ago, and tonight we saw a clue on Death Cab for Cutie. I can get used to this.
I think that I would have wagered all but a few dollars on that last DD. It was a wheelhouse category, and since I do better on DDs than FJs I think that I would have just tried to win it right there. It would have worked out for me, too.
I got FJ off the category, thanks to a certain former ToC participant

Made sense that the player from the Pacific Northwest in the plaid shirt would get the Pearl Jam clue.
Instaget FJ due to the year and the Russian name. To use another Russian name, it was a Pavlov response.
