Re: Thursday, March 19, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Coryat: $36,000
41 R/1 W
DD: 2/3; I couldn't quite pull Self-Reliance out of the recesses of my brain and ended up going with Self-Determination
FJ:
LT: garble, time-lapse, Death Cab For Cutie, Christopher Marlowe (DD)
C: volcano, dressing, India, kettle, shamrock
This was a bit of a weird FJ! category for me, as it combines a wheelhouse area (wordplay) with a weak one (literature). I couldn't come up with anything for 20+ seconds and then finally pieced together Nabokov. I couldn't remember his first name and didn't have time to tease it out, but, hey, it's J! First names not required unless specified, Mr. Troublemaker Mark Barrett.
Dat DD wager doe. Martin, I'll let you take it from here...

Anyone else care to give a whack at it? The K and the V had me thinking Kurt Vonnegut, before I realized that was plainly wrong. Couldn't get anything after that.

Nice, lively three-way game.
Thought of Death Cab for Cutie just as time ran out and just before AT revealed. Sometimes the little hints slide right by me; in this case I didn't give adequate attention to the "Taxi!" at the start of the clue.
Only other literary use of anagrams I can think of is the Harry Potter one: TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE/ I AM LORD VOLDEMORT

I saw the Vs, L and B and immediately came up with Vladimir Nabakov. Wish they were all that easy.

Hmmm.... Would they neg that for misspelling Nabokov? It doesn't fit the stipulation that the response be an anagram.Judy5cents wrote:I saw the Vs, L and B and immediately came up with Vladimir Nabakov. Wish they were all that easy.
It took me a few seconds and I did it by running through authors from 1955 that might get asked about on J! On another day I might have whiffed entirely. If I don't get an anagram almost immediately, I start to panic and my mental wheels spin uselessly.
Mrs Penguin is the same way. Hence, the following conversation took place in our living room.
[Alex finishes reading the clue. Two and a half seconds elapse.]
Me: Got it!
Mrs P: Good for you. Shut up.
But it was too late. Her mental wheels were already coming off the mental bus. They spun uselessly until time ran out. Sorry Mrs P. I'll keep me mouth shut next time.
Spoiler
I probably won't.

That's tough. I think if you wrote out the whole name, then yeah, they'd neg it, because "Vivian Darkwood" cannot anagram into "Vladimir Nabakov". However, you can get "Nabakov" alone from those letters. Still, I don't know.opusthepenguin wrote:Hmmm.... Would they neg that for misspelling Nabokov? I finished with 38R/1W, $32000 Coryat, one of my better games.
For final, I initially thought of Dr. Zhivago, but Pasternak didn't work.
"Lolita guy" popped into my head with about 5 seconds left, but I would not have been able to write it down even if Nabokov had come to me instantly.
Back to Pavlov study for me...
For Year-Book Pavlovs, 1818 for Frankenstein is etched in my mind.

Would they have simply accepted Nabokov or would his first name be necessary?

I think she's adorable. Of course, I was also a Colby fan. That dude rocks. And Gina... skas? I hated to root against her when she made her bad DD wager. But if we don't stick to our principles, what are we?This Is Kirk! wrote:Gina's smirk could give Colby Burnett's a run for its money!

I disagree. The clue is built around a full-name anagram, but there is nothing in the clue, and there was no guidance from Alex, that suggests that normal J! response rules are not in effect.econgator wrote:I'm thinking full name only.ihavejeoprosy wrote:Would they have simply accepted Nabokov or would his first name be necessary?

I agree with Kirk and Matty WRT "Nabokov" only.
Not that I am the judges, of course, but there it is.
