Game Recap for Show #7062, 2015-05-05

CONTESTANTS
Dan Green, an administrative specialist from Orland, California
Jen Stoy, a technical writer from Hyattsville, Maryland
Scott Ylinen, a draftsman and college student from Morgantown, West Virginia (whose 1-day cash winnings total $22,505)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny Gilbert. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. If you want to do well on Jeopardy!, it helps if you have a certain level of self-confidence. At the end of yesterday's program, as I was saying goodbye to our seven-day champion, Greg Seroka, I said, "I'll look forward to seeing you again on our program in our Tournament of Champions," and Scott, our champion now who defeated Greg, said, "I look forward to seeing you then, also." So let's see if that confidence that he enjoys pays off in this game against Jen and Dan. Good luck, players. Here we go. What are the categories today? Show us...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
WE MEAN BUSINESS (4/5)
U.S. HOLIDAYS & OBSERVANCES (5/5)
WRITERS BY MIDDLE NAMES (5/5) (Alex: We'll give you the middle name.)
WORLD CAPITALS (4/5, including 1 missed Daily Double)
PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS (5/5)
"GOOD" PEOPLE (4/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Scott: 12 R, 1 W
Jen: 9 R (including 1 rebound), 1 W (including 1 DD)
Dan: 6 R, 0 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 2
Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $1,400

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jen found the Daily Double on the 4th clue. Scott had $600, Jen had $600, and Dan had nothing in the bank. Jen wagered $500.

WORLD CAPITALS $800: Found in North Africa, it gets its name from an ancient district that included 3 cities
(Jen: Um, what is Marrakesh?)

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Scott: $2,200
Dan: $1,800
Jen: $1,700

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: There are very few places in the United States where there are no speed limits on our highways or freeways, but that's not the case in Europe, and Dan Green had an experience in Germany that I want to hear about.

Dan: I did, Alex. I, uh, took a rental car up to 160 miles an hour on the German Autobahn.

Alex: Wait a minute. You're sure it was 160 miles per hour and not kilometers?

Dan: I double checked to make sure. I don't even know how many kilometers it was. And the strangest thing was, uh, I got passed like I was standing still by a Porsche 959.

[Laughter]

Alex: Did it scare you?

Dan: A little bit.

Alex: A little bit, yeah, I bet.

Alex: Jen Stoy is a technical writer from Maryland who spent a year teaching in South Korea?

Jen: Yeah, that's right, South Korea. I was teaching English at an elementary school in Ansan, which is about an hour outside of Seoul, and I got to travel to Tokyo, I got to go to Australia, I got to go to Singapore. It was just a wonderful experience.

Alex: Good for you, and good for us in South Korea.

Alex: Scott Ylinen is our champion, ladies and gentlemen, and he is not only a bright young man who works with his brain, but he works with his hands. You're a woodworker.

Scott: That's right. I, uh, took up carpentry back--probably back when I was about 12 years old with my grandfather's old tools.

Alex: Are we talking about hand tools, now, or power tools?

Scott: You know, I started off with the power tools, but lately, I've been working a lot more with the hand tools, getting the old Stanley planes out and chisels and whackin' away at it.

Alex: It's fun, isn't it?

Scott: Oh, yeah.

Alex: Yeah.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
WE MEAN BUSINESS $1000: Many families send the mortgage check to this loans company once part of Intuit

"GOOD" PEOPLE $400: This advertising icon closed up shop in 2011 when GM sent him into retirement

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Scott: $6,000
Jen: $5,300
Dan: $3,600

Interestingly, at the start of this novel, Prince Oblonsky, the title character's brother, has been unfaithful.

One clue left on the board and if Dan gets it right, he breaks the lock and has a chance in FJ. Granted, it is ballet, but who knows. Then the answer is "Blah blah blah blah 19th century French author blah blah blah blah". No ballet knowledge needed!!!! Just guess a French author. So of course he clams.

I have never read that book and could not name more than one character in it. But it sounded Russian so I'll go with Anna Karenina.

All but $1,000 in Business, Middle Names, and Stops, havig NHO Quicken Loans, Zora Hurston, or blockade.

Lach Trash: Mr. Goodwrench.

I thought Parliament was completely impenetrable. How do three Yanks know all this super minutiae about Parliament like white paper? That'd be like a Brit knowing about who's fifth in line to presidential succession.

WLT Corvette on 1950s America for $400? Chevy has made a lot of sports cars.

Fourth 4/5 of the night, with all but "distaff" in "Dis".

Bobby Fischer was severely overvalued at $2,000.

No guess on FJ! Can't say that I've heard of the correct response.

That was about my thought process, too (although I did think that Oblonsky sounded a lot like Vronsky, so ...).

No clue why it was "Interestingly", though.

Congratulations, Scott, on your second win. I had 38 correct responses including three triple stumpers: Quicken, Mr. Goodwrench, and Tchaikovsky. I also got the missed DD's of Tripoli and Church of England. Instaget FJ.

Yes, there's really no excuse for standing there like the proverbial bump on a log when ringing in is the only chance you have to win. Which, presumably, is one's purpose for going there.

Ouch.

Unless you can't think of a French author. If you pressed me right now, I doubt I could think of one...

I think another clue was that it mentioned "title character", so how many famous Russian novels have a person's name in the title?

Because Anna is in a cold unhappy marriage and has an affair-- so she becomes an adulteress, which is forbidden in society, but her brother being an adulterer is a non-issue. Tolstoy's point about all happy families being the same, but each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way-- that's the opening of Anna Karenina.

Well, with the way they avoioded it like the plague, I'd have to say Dan flat out didn't have a clue what to even guess. Just Sayin'.
And Jen wasn't in a hurry to get in contention when there was one category left and she procedes from the top of the board for the first three clues.

Yes, Dan should've rung in, but the game goes by so fast in the heat of the moment that you don't always realize that sort of thing.

I got Final. The name sounded Russian and I knew Anna Karenina had an affair. I've never read the book, but I have seen portions of it performed at a Forensics tournament.

Well, I think it's clear that he didn't have an idea but he probably felt silly when it was revealed. But you ring in and guess - and it's not like asking about a French author is all that exotic - because you literally have absolutely no chance of winning otherwise. It's been noted here about 8 million times that the only thing worse than a bad guess on Final Jeopardy (and that was a mini-FJ situation) is no guess at all. Why even bother to show up if you won't make a guess when you're Jeopardy life literally depends on it? He even had time to think about it because no one else bothered to ring in either.

I'm guessing Dan took a lot of ribbing for that when he got home.

Same here. It's a Russian book and it has to have a title character. So Crime and Punishment, for example, is out. It's pretty much down to Anna Karenina or Warren Peace.

Couldn't think of AK for Russian Title Character  For some weird reason, the only title character I could think of was 'Ivan Denisovich'.

Surprised by lady's play - weak DD bet in J round, but then goes for high value clues? Also didn't know that Marrakesh become a capital.
Good enough to lose on Jeopardy!
