CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Many years ago, I got to meet one of my favorite stars--Frank Sinatra. I was very excited. Now, Louis Virtel, you got to interview one of your all-time favorite stars this year.

Louis: Yes.

Alex: First of all, who was it?

Louis: My favorite movie star of all time--Jane Fonda.

Alex: Ooh, hello.

Louis: Mm-hmm.

Alex: Good person to cheer for.

Louis: Yes, she was very commanding and austere, and she looks like a stone bust of Aphrodite with, like, newswoman hair. She looks amazing.

Alex: Mm-hmm. Yes.

Alex: Mary Green, college instructor from Milton, Georgia.

Mary: That's right.

Alex: Biker girl?

Mary: Yes, my husband and I rode motorcycles for many years, and you wouldn't expect that school administrators are bikers, also. But in our secret lives, we were bikers.

Alex: And you wear the leather?

Mary: Oh, yes.

Alex: Good.

Alex: Andrew Haringer from Squamish, British Columbia, recently taught a course about the history of which musical instrument?

Andrew: Uh, the piano, Alex, which is my instrument. And... yeah.

Alex: Okay. Where did it start?

Andrew: Oh, all the way around 1700 with Cristofori inventing the instrument in Florence, uh, all the way up to the present day.

Alex: And--but it didn't sound then the way it sounds today.

Andrew: No, quite different in its infancy, yeah.

Alex: Yeah. That's a fine subject to, uh, study--

Andrew: Absolutely.

Alex: --because there's a great deal of history involved there.

Andrew: Yep.

THE SETTING, SON $800: This Robert E. Howard creation wreaks havoc in Cimmeria & is also called "the Cimmerian"

FIRST LADY FIRST NAMES $1000: Frances

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Andrew: $12,200
Louis: $4,400
Mary: $800

WHAT AN INVENTION (4/5, including 1 missed Daily Double)
"B"ILLBOARD HITS (3/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS

Mary: 8 R, 3 W
Andrew: 3 R (including 1 rebound), 0 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 4
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $4,400

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Louis snagged the next Daily Double on the 8th clue. Andrew had $12,200, Mary had $3,200, and Louis was at $6,000. Louis wagered $5,000.

A. MILLER'S TALES $1600: Arthur Miller thought 1690s Salem was relevant to 1950s America when he wrote this play
[Louis does another power snap upon getting the correct response.]

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Louis who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 22nd clue. Andrew had $13,400, Mary had $6,800, and Louis was at $19,400. Louis wagered $5,000.

WHAT AN INVENTION $1600: Intel's Ajay Bhatt came up with this 3-letter data transfer method
(Louis: What is LAN?)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
"B"ILLBOARD HITS $2000: Flamenco guitars are featured on this Enrique Iglesias hit whose title is Spanish for "dancing"
(Louis: What is "Bailamos"?)

"B"ILLBOARD HITS $400: Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj teamed up for this song with a double-talk name

A. MILLER'S TALES $800: "My Three Sons" was a TV show; Arthur Miller's first major play had this similar title
(Alex: You knew that, Louis, but you--it didn't come to you in time.)

LET'S HAVE LEFTOVERS $1200: The tail of this primate is about the length of its body--10 to 16 inches; reminds me of the rodent in its name
(Mary: What is a rat-tailed monkey?)

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Louis: $16,000
Andrew: $15,400
Mary: $10,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
HISTORIC SITES

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place.
Louis: Wager $14,801 to cover Andrew.
Andrew: You have to wager $4,601 to cover Mary's doubled score, but certainly no more than $5,399, so as to force Mary to be right to have a chance at winning.
Mary: Consider risking between $5,401 and $8,799. This will top a $0 wager by Andrew while still beating Louis on the Triple Stumper (should Louis wager to cover Andrew's doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
On August 15, 1941 convicted Nazi spy Josef Jakobs became the last person to be put to death here

FINAL SCORES
Mary: $10,000 - $9,500 = $500 (What is the Ba) (3rd place)
Andrew: $15,400 + $15,400 = $30,800 (What is the Tower of London?) (8800-day champion: $30,800)
Louis: $16,000 - $14,801 = $1,199 (What is Auschwicz?) (2nd place)
(Alex: [To Louis] Many more people killed at Auschwitz later in the war, of course.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $6,800

GAME DYNAMICS

A well played game until FJ. I thought it was fairly simple but one had no guess and another had a really bad guess. And the one who got it right had the worst bet.

I went 5/5 this week but this is the only one I felt really confident about before the reveal.

What a hot game! After the J! round, it looked like it would be another runaway for Andrew. Then Louis and Mary each got hot in DJ. Louis's pair of $5000 DDs might have left him far in the lead, but only one of them panned out. I was cheering for Andrew to repeat, so I was happy that he and I each figured out FJ.

Not a clue, even though I've been to the Tower and probably have read a plaque about this fact. Oh well.

The Crucible as a DD in an Arthur Miller category, when spotted "Salem"!??!? Mongols for 2k when spotted...pretty much every word in the clue!??! Yikes.

Near instaget FJ. The date narrowed down the list of countries considerably.

Oh well, back to the all-in wager from second. With a special guest appearance from the 'no chance to win a TS' wager from 3rd! The wagers made more sense than Louis' guess...

Bailar is the infinitive, bailando is the gerund, and while "Bailamos" means "we dance", it's a different song. (Five years of Spanish, through AP.)

WAG'd FJ, was pleasantly surprised to be right.

This was a great game! I really enjoyed watching Lewis; he was really into the game, seemed to know strategy, and had a good knowledge base. I am sorry that he couldn't pull it out, but congrats to Andrew for prevailing on the single get FJ!

I also fell for "Bailamos."

I totally blanked on FJ. I seem to remember a FJ clue on the Tower of London from a few years back that asked for it from the last person who was held there; it might have helped to have remembered that one during the Think Music.

I disagree even though I in fact got it wrong. I never even considered a non-American location and guessed Sing Sing Prison. But the pre-December-7 date should have been a hint that we were talking about Britain, not the U.S., and the Tower is the most famous historic execution site in Britain.

I disagree. I had never heard of that guy. But a German caught spying prior to us entering the war narrowed down the possibilities of who was doing the executing. Paris was under German control so England was the only place it could have been and the Tower has been home to a number of famous people losing their head, although the spy was shot.

Disagree. I didn't know the answer, but I thought "what's a place famous for executions having occurred there in the past where it would make sense for a Nazi spy to have been executed?" and was able to come up with a correct guess.

The NASCAR category was fun. Once again the sports category is saved for last.

Got FJ. :D I thought about famous places that had executions and when I couldn't think of anything in the U.S. that fit, I went across the Atlantic.

A fast-moving game that looked like a lock and then turned into a tight one indeed.

My inner SF/Fantasy geek groaned when nobody got the Robert E. Howard and Conan clue. Paired with the miss of the Robert Heinlein clue earlier this week, it hasn't been a good week for the imaginative arts.

Being a WWII buff, FJ was pretty much an Instaget. But the answer of... Auschwitz? The only reason my jaw didn't hit the basement was the first floor was in the way. :o
