I had two thoughts in mind for FJ and I picked the wrong one.

I said Dali. But halfway through the music, my mom said "that guy who splatter painted stuff" and I knew she was right (I also knew the guy's name; just mentioning that). I'm counting it as a neg.
I don't think it was a stupid answer, but maybe you shouldn't take that from someone with an unholy FJ! losing streak.

No! In fact AT said; "Good guess! But sorry, it's wrong." The clues are so darn vague lately it's not a test of knowledge so much as interpretative skill and luck.JayK33 wrote:I had two thoughts in mind for FJ and I picked the wrong one.

Alex said it wasn't a bad guess. And since he wasn't commenting on a wager, I'd say that carries some weight.JayK33 wrote:I had two thoughts in mind for FJ and I picked the wrong one.

Chalk me up as a Dali responder, although only after my girlfriend had already said "Pollack", which I had a suspicion was correct.

I knew neither Dali nor Picasso would be correct since, although abstract, they usually were "of" something. So I figured it had to be Pollack, since he would have been a painter with enough standing to get reviewed and be well enough known to be a FJ clue. 42 right.

I believe "Rub al Khali" would be acceptable if you preceded it with "The." That's all the category required, and if we say "The Sahara" we can say "The Rub al Khali." If it adds anything to the discussion, Wikipedia defines the Arabic name as "Empty Quarter" without "the," so the two answers seem equally correct, as long as the contestant responding includes "the."

This is why J! should be played at home under the show circumstances, write down your answer. I'm surprised to hear several boardies mention family members uncouthly call out their FJ guess. If that happened at my house, that could very well be their last words.nightreign wrote:I said Dali. Coryat: $24,600

DD: 3/3

LT: won ton
My FJ! response made perfect sense...except that M.C. Escher wasn't a painter. Dang. First four-game slump of the season. No es bueno.
Add me to the list of people who found Raf irritating. Speaking of irritating, can we talk about that $400 clue they accidentally slotted into the DD spot in British History? It makes it hard to gauge wagers when the other four clues are fairly difficult and the ostensibly $1600-value DD is "this alcoholic beverage famously comes from Jamaica."

Yeah, that's a pretty good guess; notwithstanding that I'm not sure Escher spoke English (and the quote didn't seem like a translation), I probably would have said Escher too if I had thought of him.earendel wrote:"No beginning and no ending" led me to M.C. Escher.

I think the fact that the category said painters should disqualify Escher because as far as I know most of his pieces were sketches and woodcuts. The quote does seem to fit with the content of his art, I will agree.Robert K S wrote:Yeah, that's a pretty good guess; notwithstanding that I'm not sure Escher spoke English (and the quote didn't seem like a translation), I probably would have said Escher too if I had thought of him.earendel wrote:"No beginning and no ending" led me to M.C. I have to stop mixing up Draco with Hydra...they're not even in the same universe...
"He didn't mean it as a compliment" was what got me to Pollack. His splatters are basically the definition of polarizing: either you like it or you don't, and there's no middle ground. It's less likely a critic would respond in kind to Picasso's or Dali's oeuvre. (Specific pieces, sure, but not the whole thing.)

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

They literally showed you an Arabic character. That should be relatively easy to recognize.TenPoundHammer wrote:But seriously, WLT Arabic, and why should I know that Algeria is predominantly Islamic?
Northern Africa in general is overwhelmingly Muslim. You may have seen Egypt and Libya in the news over the past few years...
