Well, that's interesting. Still better than I did last week.
I didn't get the other Lawrence clue. Never been to Iceland.

Monday: Wrote down Langston Hughes just to have something
Tuesday: "Middle East" cinched it instantly. Fool me once...
Wednesday: Portugal was the only tiny colonial power I could think of.
Thursday: As I mentioned in the daily thread, I'd have to give back my MBA if I didn't get this one.
Friday: Wrote down Iceland instantly. Wavered a bit, but not enough to cross out the second letter in my response.
Sprinkles are for winners.

Lost a 5/5 for one word and one letter...
I did not think "small" applied to Iceland...so I rejected it and said Ireland instead.
My first thought Thurs was Pepperdine...then Oral Roberts...not till I focused on the date did BYU come.
I'm pretty good on Maugham but I never heard of Liza of Lambeth.
Slow on Mauritius...did not know the Pike's Peak fact.

Mon: Guessed Whitman just to have something
2/'2 on Lawrence
Wed: Portugal
Thu: Knew because I lived nearby and attended 50th anniversary festivities
Fri: When traveling to/from Europe and watching the progress of the plane on the screen, I was surprised at how close we were to Iceland.

Thank goodness for those last two FJs of the week to keep me from going 0-for-5. BYU, as you can imagine, was a huge instaget, and Iceland just made sense to me.

Played Monday off the thread, and I can't even remember if I even managed a WAG.

Tuesday, I thought of Lawrence, but I went with Rommel because they had used the former so recently in a FJ! clue.

My WAG for Wednesday was Wales. (That sentence was full of accidental alliteration... :P)

I guess my best get of the week was pulling "Lambeth" out of the air, mostly because of a song from a musical:

I just learned of Lambeth this week because of reading The Professor and the Madman, which talks about it in the first chapter. But even if I had been able to retrieve it from my mind (rather than to merely recognize that I'd heard of it before once its name was given), I'm not sure I'd have been confident enough to guess it based on "London district starting with L" (which, absent knowledge of the Maugham title, was all I had to go on).

Second week in a row I've prevented a 5/5 by thinking of a correct response and not going with it. And a genuine 4/5 this time, without any FJs on which I got spoiled and gave myself benefit of the doubt (as I did for the 7/17 game).

Woah, what!? In 1925? How old are you?

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.
