Alex: Thank you, Johnny Gilbert, and thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Good to have you with us once again. Our champion, Natalie Lips. Her mother used to be a fan of the original Jeopardy! program in the 60s and 70s when the show was hosted by Art Fleming. And her mom worked with her to prepare her for her appearance on our program. Obviously, she did a good job. Natalie's on a roll. Will Mai and Dylan be able to stop her today? I don't know if you got help from your mom. I hope so. Good luck, though. Here we go. CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Dylan Parson is from Pennsylvania, but he's now a student at Denison University in Ohio, and he has a very interesting research project that he's working on.
Dylan: Yes. Um, I'm a research assistant in the history department, and we're working on something with war correspondence from World War I. German soldiers and Canadian soldiers and not speaking German, I'm working on the Canadian.
Alex: Why Canadian, rather than U.S. soldiers?
Dylan: There actually happens to be a huge database of letters from the University of Vancouver Island, I think. Um, so we're just looking at all the letters from hundreds of soldiers to see what they're talking about, what they're feeling, and kind of see some correlations across the front.
Alex: Okay. Well done.
Alex: Mai Kulkarni, from Macon, Georgia, has an understanding with her sister. It's kind of a good understanding.
Mai: Right. Well, a couple of years ago on my birthday, she won big at a casino, and I got a cut, and so, now we have an understanding that whenever either one of us wins big, the other gets 10 percent. It's the right amount to promote, you know sisterly support and solidarity.
Alex: Absolutely. You've got her in the cheering section, yes.
Alex: Natalie Lips is an office assistant. She is our champion and collects things that have the Superman logo on it. So you're a big fan of Superman?
Natalie: I am. Specifically Dean Cain, 'cause my sisters and I used to watch Lois & Clark when we were younger. Actually, I have a Superman tattoo on my back, and I have cups, socks, boxers --anything really that has Superman on the back, I already have it.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
PORTMANTEAU WORDS $400: In the late 19th century, new technology made possible this method of capital punishment
"B"OOKS $600: The title of this bestseller by Ann Patchett refers to a smooth style of opera singing
A FASHIONABLE CATEGORY $200: This media source abbreviated WWD is often called "the fashion bible"
REMEMBER SEPTEMBER $800: The setting for literature's "Cannery Row", this California city also has a hep September jazz festival
ROCKET MAN $600: This "Rocket" was the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award 7 times
ROCKET MAN $800: This NBA center was "The Dream" leading the Houston Rockets to 1994 & 1995 NBA titles
(Alex: His name is [*]. Hakeem the Dream.)
ROCKET MAN $200: Maurice "Rocket" Richard of this 1950s team's dynasty was the first NHL player to score 500 goals
[End-of-round signal sounds.]

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Daily Double in a flag category? Yes please! (I know if that was me up there I'd Clavin that sumbitch!) Although TPTB didn't have to rub it in for me, first having at least two players so far that auditioned the same week I did, and now having a flag category with a DD in it when they're on. I know I still have 15 months in the pool, but it's going to be a *long* 15 months if they keep teasing me like this ...
Had the right election for Final, but got the wrong year for it (was 4 years early).

Gotta admit, I had no idea that electrocution was a portmanteau.
Instaget FJ. "Last one, no. One before, yes. Done."
Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Lach Trash: "amicable".
I thought "Women's Wear Daily" was extremely undervalued at $200, judging from the stand-and-stare. Can we poll it?
Canadiens also seemed steep for $200 IMO.
"The Bell Jar" was my only get in "B"ooks.
Knowing too much about the subject matter caused me to clam on Marshall Field's. "Well, it could be Field's, but Sears was also based in Chicago. Or maybe Carson's? Goldblatt's?"
I threw up the white flag as soon as White Flag came up. Nothing even remotely recognizable in French Film or Rocket, Man either. My mind went the wrong way on "the thing you're standing on now" and wondered if maybe "platform" or "podium/lectern/whatever the hell those things are" was correct.
Blanking on the second half of "Hayden's Poseidons" (got snagged on "dryad") wasn't enough to cost me the run in Rhyme Time, as I had NHO Benjamin Britten.
Got FJ! with surprising speed given my weakness in the category. Let's see, 2012 was Obama/Romney. Who did Obama run against in 2008? I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't anyone who had previously been president or VP. 2008 it is.

2008 it is.

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
That was a strange TS. It's like they either forgot that re-elections mean that one of them was a president, or in the new champ's case...did he really forget Gore was Clinton's VP (insert political jokes here I guess)?
As is usually the case in FJs like this, I managed to pick the wrong direction to start from, and took a good while to work my way to 2008.

Congratulations to Dylan on his win. I had 37 correct responses including five triple stumpers: Women's Wear Daily, Monterey, Roger Clemens, Montreal Canadiens, and telemetry. I also got the missed DD's of Bambi and NC. Got FJ about ten seconds in.

Ugly game, right down to the TS on a very gettable FJ (I started chronologically at the beginning, but then within a few seconds Obama popped into my head and 2008 was signed, sealed, and delivered). And so much lach trash, although embarrassingly I was like a deer in the headlights on the "Bambi" DD. I had heard a long time ago that Salten was author of the book version, but neither that fact nor the book's subtitle was coming to me. I tend to think of "Bambi" more as a movie, even though it's a multimedia sensation. In my defense, the book was first published in the English language back in 1928. Is it still a thing for parents to buy that book for their kids? BTW, until researching it a few minutes ago, I did not know that the book was originally published in Austria (in 1923).

Now is definitely the time for the Fashion Huns to stand down. This is the hour of the Wagering Viking.
Sigh. Natalie, oh Natalie. Dylan by rights should have had a runaway. But that North Carolina instead of NC gaffe left him with $7000 less than he should have had. This totally put Natalie in contention if only she had known how to wager from second.
On the other hand, with an easy FJ like that, nobody's going to miss it anyway, right?

Sketchy wagering in all four games and concluding with a really bad FJ wager pretty much confirms Natalie had never been to this site prior to taping.
The most Lach Trash so far for me in the new season. Electrocution, Roger Clemens, Hakeem Olajuwon, Canadians and a couple I can't recall at the moment.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

30 right.
Travel (3), "B"ook (2), Fashion (0), Sept (4), Port (2), Rocket (5)
White (5), Logo (3), Film (2), "Cab" (2), Rhyme (1), Rocket, Man (1)
Lach Trash: "Bambi"- DD, "Monterey", "Roger Clemens", "(H)akeem Olajuwon", "Montreal Canadiens", "N-C"
Not an instant FJ, but it took longer because I went from 1952 up instead of the other way.

Only 7 episodes into the season, and already three of my recordings have been ruined. I have a very bad feeling about this.
I hope WIVB does not cancel Daytime Jeopardy! within the next year (or much longer, as I expect they will spoil much more than the two broadcasts they have already spoiled (the other being spoiled through no apparent fault of theirs)).

Yes, backwards was the way to go. I got to 2008 and sat there, blinking fast, thinking, "No... too easy. What qualifier am I overlooking?" Reread the clue and relaxed. Cannot believe none of them got it.

Your avatar is Canadian. (Or, rather, Canadien.). Canuck stuff doesn't fare well on the show, the Ts was somewhat expected. Although TPTB didn't have to rub it in for me, first having at least two players so far that auditioned the same week I did, and now having a flag category with a DD in it when they're on. I know I still have 15 months in the pool, but it's going to be a *long* 15 months if they keep teasing me like this ...
Had the right election for Final, but got the wrong year for it (was 4 years early).
MY AVATAR WAS A TRIPLE STUMPER TODAY.
