Is that possible for Aaron Thompson? I didn't think that there was anyone in the 2007 field who was originally supposed to play in 2006. Are you counting Ken Jennings?

Re: Trivia about Trivia: Obscure Record Holders
Hi folks - I skimmed the whole thread but didn't see this; sorry if it's in there. As much as we would like the bragging rights, Dan and I are pretty sure we are *not* the only married pair of Jeopardy! champions, and that another couple completed this feat soon after we did (2010). Can anyone verify who we're thinking of, and if there are more? Thanks.
Edit: Of course, Dan found it several minutes after I posted. We were thinking of Tim Hughes (2-day champ from Season 16) and Laura Hughes (1-day champ from Season 26). Darn them. Any others??

To find that and some other champ/lost spouse combos I used a search term of "husbands." It took a while for the archive to do it since there were many clue hits, but down in the player section there were some helpful results.

Close - the answer I was looking for is they're the four contestants who got to play in a ToC because someone else who'd normally participate didn't for whatever reason. Part 2 is can you name those four people who didn't play in that ToC, and bonus points for why they didn't.

The others are pretty obvious to boardies (and so is this one probably), but I forget, what's Vinita's story?

She had finals in '03 and was held over to '04. Kathy Cassity took her place.

There's also Lisa Osterman:seaborgium wrote:To my knowledge, Robin Woods and J.J. Todor are the only contestants to have won multiple games from a pre-FJ third place. Both did it twice, and Robin did it in consecutive games. (She could have gotten three in a row, but her opponents may have been wary of repeating history and wagered unusually small on what would be a triple stumper.)

That misspelling in her final FJ had to be painful.

Yeah, we established after my post that several other people had done it.
Here's a couple trivial tidbits from the current ToC:

Spoiler
Brennan Bushee, to my knowledge, is only the third person to win from third place in a ToC QF that produced no wild cards.
It isn't as uncommon as the above, but Greg Seroka is the first eliminated quarterfinalist since Andrew Rostan in 2007 to have led entering FJ in his QF.

If you're talking about Mark Japinga, Japinga managed to get a high enough score for a wild card.okstater04 wrote:Wouldn'tahirbhairav wrote:dhkendall wrote:nightreign wrote:Spoiler

I think okskater was talking about the fact that if it weren't for Slowik's "legal issues" Japunga wouldn't be in the ToC in the first place. (The reason they aren't on the original list is that it was asked just three months after Slowik's run and I don't think his arrest had happened yet.

Brennan is actually only the seventh player in 140 QF games (including MDM and BOTD) to win from third, regardless of how the other players fared:
Bob Verini (S04)
Cigus Vanni (S06)
Robert Slaven (S09)
Kurt Bray (S11)
Peter Scott (S14)
Doug Hicton (S24)
Brennan Bushee (S32)
Verini and Bray were also in WC-less games.
I also see just 17 players who failed to qualify for the semis after leading before Final in the QFs. That's incredible.

Re: Trivia about Trivia: Obscure Record Holders
After the conclusion of this last ToC, I thought it would be interesting to list all of the people who ended up defeating eventual ToC champions in the regular games (2nd placers if the eventual ToC champ finished 3rd are not included, only winners)
From season 20 on:
Mike Garabedian (2x)
William Lee (2x)
Eugene Manning
Kristen Walsh
Cyd Musni (2x)
Jelisa Castrodale
Mark Japinga (4x, ToC semifinalist)

Todd Lovell
Spoiler
So far, none of them have made it to five games, and only one of them has also qualified for a ToC

Re: Trivia about Trivia: Obscure Record Holders
Surprised no one's mentioned this, but I seriously remember Carol Schlau actually winning from third place (despite being out of contention for a win assuming normal wagers by the other two contestants) on the 4/5/02 game only because the leader (I think it was Bill) made a foolish FJ wager (only the contestant intros are archived): Can anyone here confirm this?
