I admit, I fail at this far too often, but I think that by far the greater burden belongs on the writer.

Tell us all what you were trying to express. In your own words. I'm not baiting you to prove a point, I'd just like you to walk us through your thought pattern when you typed your post and hit "Submit."

"Laura" as I imagine she would say it, only based upon viewing part of her shows Friday (the 9th) and Monday. I'll admit, I can see where people who don't know me would think it's in a mocking tone, and I guess it technically does fit the definition, but it was more just me being goofy, and I did leave an apology to Laura in this post if she ever reads it.TheSunWillComeOut wrote:Alright, then:

"I guess it technically does fit the definition"
Which is why people interpreted it that way. It may not have been your INTENTION, which is a different matter, but there was no error in the semantics here.

Okay, I just got sent a video that pretty much was totally making fun of her. Had I seen that before, I would have known better. I didn't realize what kind of reaction she was invoking on the interwebs*.

Humorous remarks are always tricky to deliver, our brains have to calculate the context first and ask a bunch of questions to figure out if the joke will work or not, will it come across the way we intended, etc.

In the same post where you apologize and say that you meant no offense, you're sarcastically criticizing another poster for daring to take issue with the words that you wrote. To me, this doesn't show any contrition at all, making your apology look completely disingenuous. Also, I love that phrasing, "If Laura ever happens to read it, I apologize." So as long as she doesn't see it, you're off the hook, and no apology necessary?BobF wrote:Perfect timing! If you really felt bad about it, you could apologize, and leave it at that, but it seems pretty clear that this is not the case.

No. My apology is specific to Laura. IMHO, she is really the only one who genuinely deserves an apology, not a person who goes off on me.jeff6286 wrote:In the same post where you apologize and say that you meant no offense, you're sarcastically criticizing another poster for daring to take issue with the words that you wrote. As far as being "off the hook", what would you have me do, try to find Laura's e-mail address or home phone number and e-mail or call in an apology to her?

If you think my comments to you constitute someone "going off on you", you might just be too delicate for the internet.BobF wrote:No. My apology is specific to Laura. shoes are used in casinos for dealing games which use multiple decks, which include both blackjack and baccarat.
casinos have moved to using shoes in blackjack, and have virtually eliminated single-deck games. this is because single-deck games are targets of card-counters, who have a greater advantage in a game with a smaller universe of available (undealt) cards.

I think BobF's been around long enough that we can give him SOME benefit of the doubt, yeah? I thought his comment somewhat ill-considered. But this response seems way out of proportion to me. (Please don't try to re-explain your positions. I get it. If you think I don't, let's assume I never will and leave it at that.) I think there were less nuclear ways of pursuing this discussion. At this point I'm more worried about losing a valued boardie than about scaring off Laura. If I were Laura, I'd be scared off by this discussion anyway. I'd be a lot less scared by a quick comment to BobF that this might not be the time or the way to express his goofball streak.
