Patricia Franco, a library assistant from Arlington, Massachusetts (whose 1-day cash winnings total $16,401)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny Gilbert. Hi, folks. Welcome to one of the last three shows of this year, 2015. We're going to have a lot of fun, I feel, in this half hour, because one of contestants--I believe it's Ashley--has her own little cheering section in our audience today.
[Cheers from audience]
They have a sign, and they've come to encourage her to do well against Camille and our returning champion, Patricia. Here comes Jeopardy! for you. And the categories are as follows...

(Camille: What's a cantata?)
(Alex: No, it's a [*]. Each response must begin with the letter M.)

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Ashley: $1,600
Patricia: $1,000
Camille: $200

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: It has been a long, long time since we've had an accountant as a contestant on the program, but that changes today with Camille Hooper, who is an accountant, and didn't just fall into that by accident. Deliberately wanted to be an accountant. Why?

Camille: Well, um, I always heard the phrase, "The last one to go is the accountant," so I figured that would--that would be a pretty secure choice.

[Laughter]

Alex: And have you found the work to be as enjoyable as you thought it might be?

Camille: Thankfully, yes. Very much so.

Alex: That's good. That's important.

Alex: Ashley Wilson, next to you, is from Alexandria, Virginia. She is an organization development consultant. I don't know what that means, and I'm in good company, I understand.

Ashley: You are in good company. Recently, my mom also asked me the same question. She wanted--she wanted me to send her a blurb of a--a paragraph explaining, so she could tell people what it is that I did. But it's really just about making organizations better, helping people work better together, team-building, those sorts of things.

Alex: So you're kind of a cheerleader.

Ashley: A little bit, yeah.

Alex: With talent.

Ashley: As the cheerleader, or--

Alex: Yeah.

Ashley: With the talent as the--I'm not a talented cheerleader, I'll tell you that.

Alex: Oh, all right. Nice admission to make.

Alex: Patricia Franco is a library assistant from Massachusetts who's done some traveling, and did some in Hungary, a beautiful country, where you suddenly became a picky eater for some reason. Why?

Patricia: Yes, uh, I was lucky enough to go to Budapest when I was a teenager, but I did not have a fully developed palate at that time, and all I wanted was a grilled cheese sandwich. Which, you know, pretty hard to come by. But we finally did find a restaurant that listed grilled cheese on the menu. I immediately ordered it, and they brought me out a slab of cheese that had been grilled. No bread.

[Laughter]

Alex: Hungarian food is fantastic. I'm sure you discovered that while you were there. All right, let's get back into the game. Ashley's in command. She's making the next selection as we go on.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
"M"USIC $1000: This elegant dance for couples dominated aristocratic European ballrooms from about 1650 to 1750

TV SETTINGS $400: "The Americans" & "Murphy Brown": this city
(Camille: What is Boston?)

TV SETTINGS $200: "Good Times" & "The Good Wife": very different parts of this city

4-LETTER VERBS $1000: To ward off blows, or to take care of oneself

HOW NOW, ON THE DOW? $400: It's last alphabetically on the Dow & first numerically on the Fortune 500

HOW NOW, ON THE DOW? $600: This Dow Jones-listed company offered its own version of a Daily Double, as well as "world famous fries"
(Alex: Bet you had one recently-- [*]. Less than a minute to go now, Patricia.)

FIGHTIN' WORDS $800: The USS Mitscher & USS Preble are this type of fast, maneuverable warship; sadly, there's no USS Conan
(Camille: What's a barbarian?)

FIGHTIN' WORDS $1000: In WWI & again in WWII, the Allies countered U-boat threats by sailing in these groups, from a word meaning "escort"
[End-of-round signal sounds.]

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Ashley: $4,200
Patricia: $3,000
Camille: -$600

Final Jeopardy! Round

Post by theFJguy »

Famous Last Names

The first woman space shuttle pilot shares this surname with a man on the 1st manned lunar landing 26 years earlier.
Spoiler
What is Collins? Ashley had Aldrin; Camille had Armstrong.
Patricia Franko: $2,600+$0=$2,600

Ashley Wilson: $9,400-$9,400=$0

Camille Hooper: $10,800-$8,001=now a 1-day champion with $2,799

Spoiler for post-production clip during credits:
Spoiler
Alex: Our bad, folks. Today's final Jeopardy! should have referred to the entire Apollo 11 mission rather than to just the lunar landing part of it. We feel that Ashley might have been disadvantaged, and so we have invited her to return to play again later this week.

It really doesn't seem worth it to do some quick math in your head and wager correctly, does it?

For some reason I thought the question excluded Collins because he didn't go down onto the moon, so I went with Aldrin. Knowing the female pilot would have helped, of course. I feel extra bad about missing this one since I just submitted my astronaut candidate application.

What did Alex say at the end? I turned the sound off after the game and then back on when I saw him talking into the camera and he finished with "later this week."

I once struggled with a crossword clue for "Astronaut Collins" when Michael didn't fit. That's when I learned about Eileen.

Spoiler
jeopardy.com lists Ashley as a challenger again on Thursday, so I guess they're bringing her back for a second chance for some reason? Assuming she didn't win today, that is. Otherwise, I have no idea.

This also addresses cosmos's question. Apparently, TPTB decided in retrospect that the wording made it sound as if the last name referred to someone who actually walked on the moon (apparently OSXpert and I were not the only two who were misled) so they're letting Ashley play again later in the week. I'm glad cosmos commented because I hadn't watched that far on the tape--I went back to watch it just now.

(Despite the wording, I really should have gotten a response about an astronaut named Eileen. My excuse is that I ruled out Collins before I got that far.)

Editing to add: started composing this before Opus's post.

All they had to do was change "lunar landing" to "lunar mission".

And why would you bet nothing?

Instaget, even though I knew Collins continued to orbit.

A talented cheerleader....OK Alex.

When the Zimbabwe category popped up, my friend and I had a few side wagers on whether they'd ask for the capital, the value of the clue, and if they'd get it right (I guessed yes, $400, and no. 1/3 ain't bad  )

Patricia...what were you thinking!? You had it! A single get + a 2nd place suicide wager was your only shot! :sigh:

For FJ, I didn't remember Eileen Collins' name, unfortunately, but I figured it wasn't Aldrin, and guessed that it wasn't Armstrong. I'll take it.

Good news, friend. Did you see Alex's message at the end? I think you can count yourself right here.

Congrats to Camille on her win. I had 35 correct responses including these triple stumpers: minuet, Washington DC, Chicago, fend, Walmart, McDonald's, convoys, Cossacks, Sweden, and platinum. I also got the DD of "madrigal" that was missed by a contestant. I guessed Armstrong for FJ.

It's his spreadsheet but if the producers agree that the clue was confusing, I'd either count myself right or throw it out entirely. I got it right anyway so whatever!

Lach Trash: "fend", McDonald's, Scrat, Frank Capra, platinum.

When was the last Audio Daily Double?

I thought Chicago and South Africa were tough for the top box.

"M"usic was tough. I thought "minuet" was easier than Madrigal or Mendelsohn.

NHO "mull" unless we're talking about Martin.

I thought the Walmart clue could've used a stronger TOM, since I was going for XYZ companies and getting nowhere.

Another clue using Daily Double as the TOM for McDonald's (although to be fair, they also hinted with "fries", which IMO should've been enough for it not to be a stand and stare). I'm 100% sure that the Daily Double is only sold in certain markets, mine included. And I must admit for McDonald's, they're not bad. (Two meat patties, mayonnaise, slivered onions, lettuce, tomato, cheese).

"Wait, it can't be Good Friday, that's 3 days before Easter!" Derp.

Yes, I ran Animated Movie Characters. I needed only "Hi, I'm Josh Gad" to get Olaf.

Somehow I recognize Armstrong and Aldrin, but have NHO Michael Collins to my knowledge. I had no guess and couldn't even pull the two I did know in 30 seconds.

I'm glad they corrected their mistake. It's really frustrating when a question is clearly badly worded or written.

My FJ final question was also flawed. We brought it up a week after the taping and when the show aired, the question was edited to fit the correct response.

I'd like to see how this one is handled on the weekly poll.

I didn't know the name of the shuttle pilot and thought it might be Collins, since Armstrong or Aldrin would have resulted in more publicity. However, I specifically excluded Collins based on the wording of the clue and went with Armstrong.

awww shucks. This clue-writing screwup is gonna distract attention away from how horrible those two wagers were.
