CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Welcome back. Ashley Wilson is from Alexandria, Virginia. She is an organization development consultant. Now, Ashley, we're in the middle of a very exciting presidential election campaign year. You were involved in a political campaign many, many years ago. How old were you?
Ashley: Many. I was 8 years old. My mom ran for state delegate in Virginia, where I'm from.
Alex: Did she win?
Ashley: She did not. She lost by a very, very thin margin.
Alex: Okay, good for you.
Alex: Sandro Marchegiani from Windber, Pennsylvania. Originally from the U.K., living in the United States now for about 20 years or so.
Sandro: That's correct.
Alex: And, uh, you spent some years teaching in Africa, South Africa. Where?
Sandro: I actually taught in the country called Botswana. It's a little bit above South Africa. That's how I met my wife. She is an American. And she was teaching there in the Peace Corps. I was teaching also. And, uh, that's how we met.
Alex: Have you had many opportunities to go back to that part of the world?
Sandro: Uh, no. I'm afraid not.
Alex: No?
Sandro: It's a little too far, a little too expensive, so no.
Alex: And in some ways dangerous, too, on occasion.
Sandro: Uh, that country, actually, is quite a nice, peaceful country, so we really enjoyed our time there.
Alex: Yeah. All right, good.
Alex: Johnny, you are our champion on the program today. And you were valedictorian at the same high school that had somebody else in your family as valedictorian.
Johnny: Yes, my mother.
Alex: Oh, gosh. How many years before you--
Johnny: My mother also--actually, two of my sisters were also valedictorian at the same school.
Alex: But are they brighter than you?
Johnny: They're pretty smart.
Alex: Yeah? Okay. Non-committal.
[Laughter]
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
ALSO PART OF A BOOK $800: A ceremony celebrating the opening of a building
ALSO PART OF A BOOK $1000: A youth being trained to become a knight
THE LEGAL SYSTEM AT WORK $200: In 1998 a woman sued Universal Studios Orlando for $15k, claiming this alliterative attraction was too scary
STATUE-ESQUE WOMEN $400: Last name of Edith, who stands still at a facility in Rochester, Minn. where she was the first nurse anesthetist
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Ashley: $6,400
Johnny: $3,200
Sandro: $2,600

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
AFRICAN ANIMALS
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Ashley: Wager $1,001 to cover Sandro, but no more than $1,399 so as not to fall behind Johnny's doubled score.
Sandro: You have the hope of surpassing Ashley if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $9,801 to force Ashley to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Johnny.
Johnny: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE

Re: Thursday, December 31, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Precalled gnu and didn't see any reason to switch away from it based on the sound clue. A little disappointed I didn't also come up with wildebeest, but we only needed one...
A slightly bigger DD bet on the super easy New Zealand question and the game would have been a lockout, but it ended up not mattering.
Gangs of New York is apparently more obscure than I thought...

Dik-dik fits approximately 2/3 of the clue, but I can find no alternate name describing its looks and from the Afrikaans, so it's a no go.
Also didn't realize a gnu was an antelope. I thought it was a bovine of some sort.

Re: Thursday, December 31, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
The word "gnu" being derived from the sound of the wildebeest is something true only in the sense that you can find sites on the Internet making the claim. The Oxford dictionary qualifies it with "perhaps."
This article seems to debunk the "guh-nuh" theory while giving more plausible alternatives to explain why there is a silent "g": http://veneryterms.blogspot.com/2014/04 ... -gnus.html

That was my problem. Best I could do was springbok.MinnesotaMyron wrote:Also didn't realize a gnu was an antelope. I thought it was a bovine of some sort.
And that Universal Studios clue was stupid. You don't associate it with a haunted house.

I thought it was called the Haunted Mansion, so I was stumped.
No chance for me on FJ.
Happy New Year, everyone.

Ashley got a second chance and won this time, so congrats to her. I had 38 correct responses including four triple stumpers: dedication, page, Hittite Empire, and Byzantine Empire. I got FJ with wildebeest.

The only time there's a haunted house at Universal is during Halloween Horror Nights.

32 R / 5 W / $23,200. Lach Trash: Mayo, Byzantine Empire.
On legal system for $400, I initially credited "zodiac" as correct, but after a bit of review, I'm calling it a neg instead.
Couldn't come up with anything for final.
Congratulations to Ashley on taking advantage of her second chance!

Re: Thursday, December 31, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Tough miss for buddy who lived in Botswana. Piece of cake for me as I actually bothered to do some precalling. Wildebeest sounds about as afrikaans as it gets.
Johnny cracked me up. Every time he answered it was like "Oh, it's my turn? Heck! Ummmm, Lake of the Woods? Okay!" But it did get a little bit grating considering the time he took to pick clues.
I was kind of rooting against Ashley in her first game because I thought it was pretty bogus of Alex to point out her cheering section before the game started (that's not on her, but still), but now I'm anxious to see how much she can rake in after the fluke FJ! incident.
Second mention of Lake of the Woods this year. Still never been though.
Happy new year board buddies.
Johnny cracked me up. Every time he answered it was like "Oh, it's my turn? Heck! Ummmm, Lake of the Woods? Okay!" But it did get a little bit grating considering the time he took to pick clues.

Weird game. Gangs of New York, a TS. Byzantine a TS, when spotted a map, and Justinian...
Almost talked myself out of an instaget FJ, because wildebeest (animal name + Afrikaans) seemed too easy, and gnu didn't seem to fit as an onomatopoeia, but, whatever.
Congrats to Ashley for making the most of her second chance.

Never thought of a gnu as an antelope, so I went with ibex. I bet gnash gnew the correct response.
I had $24,400 and 34 right. If "I'm a Barbie Girl" is too much information for the clue, then I'll have to deduct $1600. A quick search of the archive shows no other hits for that controversial dance hit, which is amazing considering how old that song is.

Good, glad I'm not the only one who thought ibex might be the correct response. (I ended up with gnu)sarisson wrote:Never thought of a gnu as an antelope, so I went with ibex.
Johnny picked the wrong night to wager zero.
