Some weeks when I do poorly I just vote and don't bother posting about it. But maybe the fact that I'm on a computer and not my phone right now makes the difference.

I pulled out "go west" halfway through the reveal of the responses, I didn't remember enough of the Apocalypse Now cast to be able to answer that well, actually thought of Lewis Carroll first and moved past him too quickly to think to consider his actual name, and went straight to the Rat Pack member whose death was closest to 2015 (Joey Bishop).

I blanked on Alleghenies, and jumped Omaha -> Nebraska -> Platte without considering the implication of "showcasing the West."

For the river one, my first thought was the Mississippi, but when the first contestant answered, I thought, "Oh, they're probably right." I still didn't go back to it after both of them were negged, thinking it might be something even more obscure. I wouldn't say it was overvalued, but I would say its placement made me think it was less obvious than it was.

Hod must be better known across the pond; both Spouse and I thought it should have been top-box material, and then I was very surprised to see how many people here weren't familiar with the word. Is there a more commonly-used term for the tool in North America?

First back-to-back 5/5s for FJ!s in a long time, but I've never heard of a "hod" before...

Rereading Monday's clue, I can see why I didn't interpret it as looking for a 2-word phrase--I was thinking of something like "[verb] and [verb]".

Rereading Thursday's clue, I now see that there are two ways to parse it: one way says that he considered anagrams of <....> as possible pen names, and the other groups "anagrams of <.....> for his pen name" together. I had interpreted it the first way (as intended, I guess), but I didn't see "Dodgson" (nor "Carroll", for that matter), so I looked for greener pastures.

I just plain got lucky on Wednesday--thought of him, didn't think of anything better.

Should have gotten Alleghenies after having lived in central PA for four years. Thought of the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Poconos, but none sounded right so I clammed. NHO Hod. Platte on third clue.

NO TOM W/E on Monday's clue. The 'health' bit suggested 'taking the air for TB' so I was headed to the Italian Riviera with Keats and Shelley. Terribly vague clue.
Rest were instagets, including Lewis Carroll, even had "Who's Charles Dodgson?" AT woulda been proud...

HOD was a new word; missed Alleghenies; trans-Mississippi was instant, at least. Foggy week for goats TBVH!
