CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Natasha Gainey is an artist from Georgia. And, Natasha, as you know, this week, we've had some wonderful father/daughter stories to talk about on this program. You have one that has to do with travel in Mexico, I understand.
Natasha: That's right. Um, when I was a child, my sister and I were taken to Mexico by my father uh, for a vacation. And we left the hotel, and there was some mariachi players there who were looking for some, uh, tourist business. And, uh, my father talked to them and he basically hired them to follow us around for that afternoon.
Alex: What a thrill.
Natasha: And so my sister and I got to lead a mariachi parade through Mexico City while we--we were tourists.
Alex: Good for you. Great memory.
Alex: Therese Jones, originally from State College, Pennsylvania. We introduced you as a space policy analyst. What do you do?
Therese: Uh, so I study the regulation of commercial human space flight. So I'm looking at what's going to happen when companies like SpaceX and Virgin Galactic, uh, start regular launches into space.
Alex: With people...
Therese: With people.
Alex: ...onboard.
Therese: Yeah, so people onboard, and what sort of safety regulations might be needed, because right now it's effectively the Wild West.
Alex: [Laughs] Good. Uh, work at it real hard because we don't want to be taken advantage of.
Alex: Rachel Zoch from Deer Park, Texas, writer and editor, who, when she travels, I understand, a lot of people come up to you and ask for directions. And it doesn't matter where you are. Why is that, do you think?
Rachel: I--I must just have a face that looks like I know where I'm going.
Alex: Okay. All right.

Natasha: Wager $1,801 to cover Therese, but no more than $8,599 so as not to fall behind Rachel's doubled score.
Therese: You have the hope of surpassing Natasha if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $7,201 to force Natasha to wager to win; but if you're intent on holding on to second place, wager no more than $1,399 to protect your second place position from being usurped by Rachel.
Rachel: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

Re: Friday, March 4, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Too bad Rachel lost. After her one sentence story of people asking her for directions in strange cities, I'd have loved to hear what else she had in her past to reveal.
With $2,400 left on the board and trailing by $4,800, Therese bets to get within $2,800 on a DD.
FJ was an instaget when Alex said the winner would roar. Without that hint, I was lost. My guess was "I Will Survive". Of course, Gloria Gaynor is as Australian as John Mellancamp. The year was too early for Olivia Newton-John and the only other Aussie singers I could think of were groups and the clue indicated an individual. At least Rachel was in the right country, but I guess Alex is not a big AC/DC fan.
Congrats to Natasha on her win. Loved her story. Having a mariachi band follow you around sounds like something from a movie or a TV show.

Re: Friday, March 4, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Pop culture from the 1970's is one of my wheelhouse categories so this was an instaget for me. I actually have a 45 rpm record of the song somewhere.
I enjoyed this game. I liked both challengers, and I liked Rachel except for her wagering.

Correctly guessed the singer but I couldn't remember what any of her songs were called.

Re: Friday, March 4, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
30 seconds in - at first glance, I'm not hopeful for a well-played game.
But Natasha did make it a true DD early on!
Why did Alex just give away the last clue in the yes/no category? What a crock. If you have a clue you've got an edge, but he just gave any clueless players the info.
But then the non-thinking $2k DD, sigh. And an even more non-thinking $2k at the end. Just wow.
There were two gift clues for Therese with space shuttle and Titan's discoverer, and a whole category for Natasha the artist. Since the champ lost I'm sure the FB morons will all be screaming foul.
Both Rachel and Therese butchered the FJ wagers. No real surprise. So much of the time you can just look at a contestant and determine whether or not they know any strategy.

Did something get edited out? That's the shortest inerview I've seen in a while. Guess she was out of ideas.Bamaman wrote:Too bad Rachel lost. After her one sentence story of people asking her for directions in strange cities, I'd have loved to hear what else she had in her past to reveal.
Same here. The irony of three women missing it. Wow.FJ was an instaget when Alex said the winner would roar. Without that hint, I was lost.
I almost choked when Alex said he'd never heard of 'Back in Black'.

Same here. Had no clue Helen Reddy was an Aussie. Guessed ONJ.Bamaman wrote:FJ was an instaget when Alex said the winner would roar. Without that hint, I was lost. My guess was "I Will Survive". Of course, Gloria Gaynor is as Australian as John Mellancamp. The year was too early for Olivia Newton-John and the only other Aussie singers I could think of were groups and the clue indicated an individual.

Congrats to Natasha on her win. I had 39 correct responses including these triple stumpers: tattoo, championship, nuclear submarine, "Yesterday", Calvin, and Rosa Parks. I also got the missed Daily Doubles of daredevil and Bethesda. I got FJ before Alex finished reading the clue.

Put me down for "Ooh… I guess that was before your time." in Final.
It seemed like Natasha and Rachel were actively avoiding the DDs toward the end there. And then Therese found the last one and made about as bad a wager as she could.

Had no idea on Final.
I think I managed to miss all of the Triple Stumpers this time. 36/60 here. Rough week for me. Only got the Robespierre DD.
I think I only hit one Final this week (Virginia yesterday).

Could there be a better FJ question for a Rift Outchange game? I was giggling the whole time the clue was up. Sad that it was a triple stumper.

Vaguely know Helen Redddy is Aussie. No way I was getting that FJ.
I'm not very good at pop culture and even I know back in black, jack and Diane. Alex must have read back in black at least 10 times as part of his clue reading duties.

A search of "Back in Black" showed quite a few hits for the song, one as recent as November 24, 2015. I couldn't get an accurate count with clues for the color mixed in made it more trouble than its worth, but the song and group seem to be popular with the answer writers. A search for AC/DC got me five hits that mentioned that particular song.doihavetoreally wrote:Vaguely know Helen Redddy is Aussie. No way I was getting that FJ.

Actually, the year was fine. If Not For You came out in 1971. But the clue stated Australian born, which disqualifies ONJ.Bamaman wrote:The year was too early for Olivia Newton-John
I had no idea Helen Reddy was Australian.
