I didn't give myself credit, because the clue specified "military" title...Judges?
Interesting. On the flip side, "Grand" as in "grand marshal" is among the highest military titles. It's more commonly used in Europe, but we are talking about Spain here.

Alex: Be more specific.

Contestant: What is West Virginia?

Alex: Correct!
That would be west Virginia.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

That'll teach me to post before reading. More than one person mentioned Virginia/West Virginia. Jeff6286 did a cool riff on BMS-ing from United Kingdom to Ireland to Northern Ireland. I'll have to think of something more original. How about this?

Alex: This singer and ex-husband of Cher went on to become mayor of Palm Springs

Contestant: Who is Bono? [pronounced BAHN-oh]

Alex: Be more specific.

Contestant: Who is Sunny Bono?

As is "da Vinci" (of Vinci) for Leonardo.

The difference is that purists would say that to treat da Vinci as a surname is just plain wrong. (I don't know if Jeopardy! judges have ever had to rule on the issue.).

Actually I was part of a game where Leonardo da Vinci was the FJ response and one of the contestants only managed to write "Leonardo da V". After a pause where the judges conferred it was decided that as "Leonardo" alone would have been accepted, not completely writing "Da Vinci" did not make the response incorrect (I was out of the running at that point in any case). http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=2197

I misspelled it during my write-up, though I said "Morton" during the episode, junior. Corrected.

DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Jelly Roll Morton, self-sufficient, hasenpfeffer, Fiji, Swiss Guard (DD)

The BMS on Ireland was weird, but I thought it cruel/confusing to refer to Northern Ireland as a "country" in the clue. I understand that that is what the main constituent parts of the UK are called, but we use the terms "country" and "nation" interchangeably. I would have gone with "what is now this UK country" or something similar.

I assume Alex was prepared to accept "What is the United Kingdom".

Hello everyone!

There was a clue about Ireland on this recent episode and I found a clue on Ireland in the J! Archive that left me scratching my head:

Color represented with white & red on the Irish flag

http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=348

Now is it just me or is there no red on the Irish flag, but orange? Can someone chime in on whether this was a mistake? Thanks!

In the future, maybe you should put these in the Reretaken Down thread, which is a catch-all. They are not relevant to this thread.
