CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Marjika Howarth is from South Jordan, Utah.
Marjika: Yes.
Alex: And I understand you're a little hard on your kids.
Marjika: Yeah.
Alex: You told them, all four of them, they had to learn to play...?
Marjika: The piano. Yes. All four of my children can play the piano. And when they started, when my oldest started 16 years ago probably, I said, "I've got to, you know, walk the walk, talk the talk", and so I started taking lessons, as well, and I still am all these years later. They all play better than I do because they are just more used to performing. You know, as an adult player, you don't perform as much.
Alex: So by now they don't resent it anymore. They're into it.
Marjika: No. Oh, they like--they're glad they know how to play, yes.
Alex: Good. It's a lovely--
Marjika: Yes.
Alex: --lovely skill to have.
Alex: Will Gilbert is a retail manager from St. Louis, Missouri, and he makes themed T-shirts. What kind of T-shirts are we talking about?
Will: I make T-shirts that are themed about the city of St. Louis, so just--
Alex: Would that include the Cardinals?
Will: Every once awhile. We just can't get into the copywritten logos.
Alex: Ah.
Will: But we do have some Cardinals themed T-shirts. In general, it's just t-shirts that celebrate how awesome I think the city is.
Alex: Okay.
Alex: Laurie MacDougall is our champion. We keep introducing you as a cancer registrar. Now, what exactly do you do?
Laurie: Well, it's a job not many people have heard of. It's ground-level cancer surveillance. We collect data on people who are diagnosed with or treated for cancer at our facility, and the data we collect are then used for statistics, epidemiologic research, and environmental studies.
Alex: Okay, good.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
LITERARY NICKNAMES $600: This American was "The Children's Poet" & "The Poet of the Commonplace"
LITERARY NICKNAMES $1000: Much to his displeasure, a friend called this "Vicar of Wakefield" author "Goldy"
GET TOGETHER $1000: Specific verb meaning to mix or alloy a metal with mercury
(Marjika: What is smelt?)
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Will: $8,200
Laurie: $2,800
Marjika: $400

Re: Thursday, June 23, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
An instaget FJ for me, which means I am shocked it went 1/3 on the show.
I was glad she won so the whiners on Facebook can whine some more about her voice.
Just Plumb should have been negged.

Instaget FJ. 1949 Oscar trivia? Not a chance. 2006? Easy money.

Congrats to Laurie on her third win. I had 46 correct responses including these triple stumpers: Longfellow, Goldsmith, amalgamate, Latvia, Louis XIV, and Capitol Building. I also got the missed DD of Swift, and I got FJ.

Tight game, one full category left, one DD left, and the champ picks the only clue guaranteed NOT to hold the coveted DD. Then upon luckboxing into it makes a useless wager. Finally makes a horrible wager in FJ. And yet all this gosh awful play leads to a win. OK then.

Coryat: $34,000
44 R/2 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Jonathan Swift (DD), Match, Louis XIV
My FJ! streak stops at 14. I need to have Oscar stuff down cold when and if I ever get The Call. Mirren was who I was thinking of, but the best I could come up with for "older, distinguished British actress" was Judi Dench.

Exactly. The fact that one contestant screwed up by adding incorrect information doesn't change the rule that last names only are generally acceptable.Robert K S wrote:Why? Is there more than one actress Plumb?Bamaman wrote:Just Plumb should have been negged.

I agree with you. Under the current rules, the contestant was correct. It's no different from any other case where one contestant's wrong/late response tipped off a second contestant to the correct one.Robert K S wrote:Why? That said, I wouldn't object to a special rule for this case. Viz., if a previous contestant gave a wrong first name, subsequent responses must contain the correct first name. Unless that's spelled out ahead of time, it's not fair to penalize players just because it seems obvious or whatever.

I am sure I have seen times where they made the second player give the full name when the first player got the first name wrong.opusthepenguin wrote:I agree with you. That first Daily Double about "Presto" was just way too familiar. I guess nine years is a respectable amount of time to wait before recycling a clue, though.

Re: Thursday, June 23, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Imagine the panic in the writers' room if they announced even a 5-year minimum requirement for recycling.DHicton wrote:That first Daily Double about "Presto" was just way too familiar. I guess nine years is a respectable amount of time to wait before recycling a clue, though.
Last time they made this factoid into an FJ clue. But even with 26 seconds to think, the contestants couldn't get there. To be fair, the clue was marginally more difficult in its 2007 version. The category was ENGLISH LANGUAGE WRITERS. The text of the clue gave no hint as to nationality beyond what can be divined from "1710 to 1713" and a basic knowledge of history. Today's clue specified "Anglo-Irish" (if I recall). That would have ruled out all three guesses from 2007--Samuel Peeps, Daniel Defoe, and Bejamin Franklin.
Still, the 2007 clue seems eminently gettable for an FJ. And today's clue struck me as a textbook DD. Not something you're prepared to buzz in on immediately. But with a few seconds and no competition, a contestant should be able to get there. I think Laurie made her guess too quickly. She might have benefited from taking a moment.

I also said Cate Blanchett because I recalled her playing Elizabeth, but Helen Mirren and Judi Dench definitely crossed my mind. I crossed off Judi Dench since I remembered that Shakespeare in Love was in 1998.
I felt like the last response of "tweets" was overvalued.
I bet the correlation of "Albert Hall" and the "Helter Skelter" FJ would be pretty high.

Re: Thursday, June 23, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
NHO "swan of Avon". I only knew "Bard of Avon" for Shakespeare + "____ of Avon".
WLT Caroline Kennedy at $200?
I never would've guessed "passwords" on Apps for $200.
Fuse = wick?
All but Albert Hall in Adele, surprisingly.
WLT Argentina, liver, Scotland, Louis XIV, or Capitol Building at $400?
Early photographer? Oh, it's some guy with some generic name I can't ever remember. Mathew Brady just will never stick.
2006 actually led me away from tweets since I didn't think they went that far back.
No guess on FJ! NHO Helen Mirren.
