CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: [Getting Dennis's name wrong] David Fipps is a retired Naval medical specialist from San Diego, California. I see you have gray hair. Retired. How many years in the Navy?
Dennis: I was in the Navy for 26 years, Alex.
Alex: Wow. Uh, do you come from a military family?
Dennis: I do. Uh, my mother was in the, uh, British Navy during World War II.
Alex: Hello.
Dennis: My father was in the Army in Korea, as well as being in the Army Reserve and National Guard Naval Reserve. And my brother was a career Army officer.
Alex: Terrific.
Alex: Courtney Cissel from Raleigh, North Carolina. You are passionate about punctuation.
Courtney: I am.
Alex: And is that a punctuation mark of some kind on your arm?
Courtney: It is. I'm so passionate about my favorite mark, the semicolon, which is totally getting ruined by text culture. I have one etched in my flesh because I love semicolons just that much. They're just beautiful punctuations.
Alex: Do people nowadays use enough punctuation? Or do they use too much punctuation?
Courtney: It's usually just the wrong punctuation.
Alex: Wrong.
Courtney: They use lots of commas in the wrong places. In the wrong places. They should use a semicolon instead.
Alex: Okay.
Alex: Vivek Ravishanker is our champion. Like most of our players, he enjoys traveling. He's done a lot of traveling in his time. But he does it with a special point of view. Tell us.
Vivek: Oh, so I love sort of quirky oddities, roadside attractions. You know, "the world's largest" this. The, you know, some grave with the skeleton head.
Alex: Driving the road and seeing a big dinosaur...
Vivek: Exactly.
Alex: ...made out of papier-mâché or whatever. And you're gonna go into that place and check out the shop?
Vivek: Absolutely. I love, uh, some of the strange stuff you can find on Route 66 in California, for example, so...
Alex: Uh-huh. Okay.
Vivek: That is my kind of travel.
Alex: All right, good for you. It's fun.
Vivek: Yeah.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
NEW ORDER $1000: PERSIST:
Do you persist in believing in goblins & faeries, types of these?
(Dennis: What is spirits?)
GUNS N' ROSES $1000: The Remington 700 is an example of a rifle with this manual action to load a cartridge into the chamber
(Dennis: What is the lever action?)
WHAT A BUNCH OF BOLOGNA $1000: As part of the drive toward unification, in 1860 Bologna voted to unite with this Italian island, then a separate kingdom
(Courtney: What is Sicily?)
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Vivek: $6,200
Courtney: $3,800
Dennis: $1,000

Re: Wednesday, November 2, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Kinda surprised this wasn't a triple get.
Re: Wednesday, November 2, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Admirer = married was totally contrived. I missed Pirates at $200 because Alex didn't explain the category. Lach Trash on Sprites.
Bazooka = musical instrument?!
WLT Beatrix Potter at $200? Calaveras County was my only get in Frog.
Got only the first 2 in 80s Music, but would've gotten the bottom two with a hair more time. The Lauper album was the only one I had no hope on.
NHO the Appenines to my knowledge.
0/5 in Anatomical Quotes and the Youth category. Didn't recognize thing in either.
I had the first three D in Science but couldn't pull them in time. Was cycling through all the -oses and dextrose just wasn't there. NHO that flask guy, but got dimorphism.
Forgot the category and couldn't pull Foxtrot, then clammed on Vicente Fox. Also disappointed by the lack of Nick Wilde in that category.
No guess on FJ! Even AT's hint that it was one of the most popular films of all time didn't trigger anything, even though I know Welles = Kane cold. I just had nothing to go on here.

Lach Trash for me on Burma and Vicente Fox.
Also the FJ was wonderful. I love Orson Welles' work, though I immediately thought of him in The Third Man when I came to my answer, even though he didn't direct it.
And of course, cue the Pinky & the Brain references.
Also fun fact! He was used as part of a production logo for a B-movie company that would introduce itself as "A Rainbow Release." Here's what it looks like if anyone is curious:

WLT gold?
I believe that this would have been one time when giving the actor's real name as a response would not have been accepted, even though Fox(x) was not in quotations.

Re: Wednesday, November 2, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Excellent, edge of your seat game. Congrats to Vivek.
I definitely thought of Welles as the FJ clue was being read. If not the top film of all time, Citizen Kane has to be right up there. It's not exactly my favorite film and I never even saw it until my family rented it some time in the 1980s. But I was immediately impressed. The film has its scathing aspects to it, as is duly noted; but there are some more - I'll say understanding - moments in it that give it extra depth.
Welles himself was pretty attuned to civil rights and was critical of racism and segregation.
Then there was the part about his voice paying the bills...I certainly thought of those wine commercials. Some have criticized them; how they'd be received in today's highly commercialized media?

I'd say I was shocked but for all that things related to old movies come up so often, including in FJ, even the simplest clues seem to flummox contestants.econgator wrote:Kinda surprised this wasn't a triple get.

I got FJ, and I think it's because I'm old enough to have seen him in commercials later in his life, and I remember that velvety voice from his interviews on the Tonight Show.
Loved Vivek's reaction when he realized he was right.
I'm glad Courtney had the right guess on her DD about Poland, as opposed to her other DD with no guess at all. If she was like me, she got it because of Alex's pronunciation.

It really helped to know that Orson Welles did a lot of voice-over work in his later years. (His last film role was as the voice of the planet-eating robot Unicron in 1986's The Transformers: The Movie.)

Instaget FJ, and I honestly can't judge the difficulty of the clue, as that's just about the best possible category for me.
LT: Sardinia, Mozart in the Jungle, Vicente Fox
Good game.
A real shame that the Navy officer went with "bimorphism" instead of "dimorphism"; not only did that mean he went into FJ with $7k instead of $11k, but it also would have meant Vivek went into FJ with only $13,000 instead of $15,000. Huge swing based on a single neg.
Didn't matter, as Vivek got FJ to win a fun, competitive game.

37 right.
Bologna (3), Lit (3), "B"rand (3), 80's Music (4), Guns (2), New Order (4)
Youth (4), Quote (2), Fox(x) (5), TV (3), Soldier (3), "D" Science (1)
Lach Trash: sprites, Sardinia, Burma, Vicente Fox
I guessed Hitchcock, but I knew it was Welles after Alex made his comments before the reveal.

Re: Wednesday, November 2, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Before the thread dies I'm sure I will have company with my miss by guessing Hitchcock. (Edited to add - happened in the post above before I finished this.) Welles did not occur to me until Alex's speech between time's up and going to the player responses. I knew I had been pecked to death in the shower at that point as Vivek knew he was a two-time champ.
Missing the clue stings since I'm a long-time subscriber to EW and read the article. Little quotes about the selections were not going to resonate enough to stick with me. During the break I brainstormed 7 guys in the 50 I thought would be likely for a FJ! clue. Welles like Woody Allen was not on the short list, so all my fault.
Just my opinion (coated with sour grapes), but if that was the FJ! clue for every game this season I would not expect it to go 3/3 in more than 5 games and I would bet the under.
Nice repeat win by Vivek. He led going into the FJ! round. He sole solved the clue. He went for the 20001 and no potential tiebreaker.

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
Latest movies (1-10): Everything Everywhere All at Once (10), Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (6), Black Sunday /1960/ (6), Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (7)

I got FJ! after first thinking of Hitchcock.
Am I the first to claim LT for Finland? A trip to Helsinki for a couple of hockey games helped me. I have been to Mannerheim Square where there's a statue of Mannerheim in horseback. The main route through the city is named Mannerheimintie.
