Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Hi, folks. Our returning champion, Lisa, up to the task yesterday in her first defense, making the game a runaway. An impressive 2-day total, as you just heard. Ben and Doug, you've got your work cut out for you, but good luck to all three. Here we go! Let's have fun with these categories in the first round of play...

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: There is perhaps more pressure on this man, Doug Baker, as a contestant on Jeopardy! today, because he is married to a seven-time Jeopardy! champion. And her name?

Doug: Stephanie Jass.

Alex: Now you met and kind of impressed her when you almost beat her in a game that requires a certain amount of knowledge.

Doug: Yes, we played Trivial Pursuit on our first date, and I was winning. I was so winning, and then she said something along the lines of, "Let's hurry up so we can make out."

[Laughter]

Doug: Let's just say I lost every point thereafter rapidly and she ended up winning.

Alex: That was the smartest thing you did that day, believe me.

Doug: Yeah, absolutely.

Alex: Ben Smolen from Los Angeles. He's a writer, and when you were 16, you were in an independent film where you performed.

Ben: I was in The Squid and the Whale, and I was--in that movie, there's a talent show scene, where Jesse Eisenberg plays the guitar.

Alex: Right.

Ben: Obviously, they couldn't cut to that directly, so I was the young boy covered in puppets.

Alex: Ah.

Ben: Before that scene began.

Alex: Sounds like fun. All right.

Alex: Now to our champion, Lisa Schlitt, a microbiologist from Pennsylvania, who went on a New York subway with a frog.

Lisa: Yeah. So I lived downstate around New York City, and my college was in upstate New York. And I actually happened to win a frog at the end of high school. Little guy just kept on living, despite coming in a ketchup cup. So I get to take him back and forth, and I'd have him in a little container while I'd catch the A train uptown, go to Port Authority, and take a long bus ride back, and the little guy made it for 8 years.

Alex: Good. You're in command of the board right now, young lady.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Lisa found the Daily Double on the 26th clue. Lisa had $1,600, Ben had $1,600, and Doug was at $2,000. Lisa wagered $1,000.

(Lisa: What is a one-way curtain?)

THEATER GLOSSARY $1000: It's the 4-letter word for an upright piece of painted scenery mounted on a frame

COOL RHYMES $400: Directive to treat others the way you'd like them to treat you

SYSTEMS PRIMED $800: Musicians Daron Malakian, John Dolmayan, Serj Tankian, Shavo Odadjian

(Alex: No.)
(Lisa: Oh!)

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Doug: $12,000
Lisa: $10,600
Ben: $7,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
ACTRESSES

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
First and a half equals second plus third.
Doug: Wager $9,200--wagering any more risks falling behind Ben's wager of $4,600.
Lisa: You have a choice of wagering $0 (to win on a Triple Stumper), between $4,201 and $7,799 (to win if Doug is wrong and you are right while still winning on a Triple Stumper if Ben wagers as recommended or higher), or going all-in with a wager of $10,600 for the win or tie if you give the correct response (and provided Doug is wrong or doesn't wager to cover or wagers less for some obscure reason). Since winning on a Triple Stumper is probably the likeliest of these outcomes, a wager in the $4,201-$7,799 range is best.
Ben: Wagering $4,600 ties Doug's $0 wager and beats Doug's standard shutout bet of $9,201 by $1 on the Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
From 1959 to 1968, she made only 4 films but received Oscar nominations for Best Actress for all 4

FINAL SCORES
Ben: $7,400 + $3,199 = $10,599 (Who is Katherine Hepburn) (2nd place)
Lisa: $10,600 + $10,600 = $21,200 (Who is Katharine Hepburn?) (43001-day champion: $21,200)
Doug: $12,000 - $9,201 = $2,799 (Who is Audrey Hepburn) (3rd place)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $13,200

At least Dr. J gets to retain family bragging rights, Sorry it didn't work out for you, Doug. I wonder if they'd have taken just "Hepburn".

FJ was an instaget because she was the only actress I could think of who would've been nominated for multiple Oscars in the 1960s. For future reference, the films for which KATHARINE was nominated are: "Suddenly Last Summer" ('59); "Long Day's Journey Into Night ('62); "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner ('67 won); and "Lion In Winter" ('68 - won).

I knew The Compleat Angler is a frequent J! clue subject, but couldnt come up with Izaak Walton. Rive Gauche neg for Lisa was probably an instance of knowing too much. I've never heard of the one she said.

The Sports category seemed very YEKIOYD.

"Buddy system" is a SCUBA thing?!

Lach Trash: System of a Down, "for whom the bell tolls".

Precalled Henley/Eagles in "The Drummer Sings".

"I" Land should've had precalls out the ass after I realized the category wasn't "Island", but I just couldn't think of any "I" lands. Just like when they had "States ending in 'Ia'" and I went 0/5 because I just couldn't think of any.

I didn't see anything leading to "Transportation" in 14 for $400.

I know there is someone named Katharine Hepburn, but I could tell you literally nothing about her.

So none of them precalled For Whom the Bell Tolls, or recognized the passage? OK then.

Instaget FJ. Oscars trivia pays off again...not that it will help in the current TD, I'm sure.

I had FJ on mute, but is there some reason that you misspelled Ms. Hepburn's name? Because it's Katharine.

And I can't imagine that they would have accepted Hepburn per Kirk's information from the other day about what contestants are told about giving complete Final Jeopardy responses. That said, I had no idea that Audrey Hepburn had three nominations in the 60s, plus another in 1955. So, this was an instaget but it's just as well that I was oblivious to Audrey's nominations. (I knew she won for Roman Holiday but also knew it was in the early 50s).

Not to sound too much like TPH, but I'm missing something apparently. I have no idea how this was almost a triple get. I couldn't figure it out any closer than "name a famous actress from the 60s" and took a very random stab at Elizabeth Taylor, aware that my chances of being right were minimal.

That is why you watch the interview segment.

Another Audrey Hepburn miss here. I did not know that particular Oscar nugget and took a guess for someone who may have fit the requirements.

Looks like it's 3/7 so far, so I'll take the under 50% for the weekly poll even though Katharine Hepburn seems guessable for someone to pull out a name to have a response.

Lisa is 3/3 on FJ! clues and her opponents are 1/6, so well done by her being correct on three that were no cinch for other J! players.

Did anyone else do what I did, and write down "Hepburn" first, before deciding whether to write K or A in front?

Luckily for me, I picked the right one (I had a dim memory that 1968 might have been one of the years that K. Hepburn was not just nominated, but also won).

Katharine was nominated 12 times; she won Best Actresd in back-to-back years in 1968 and 1969. If you know that bit of movie trivia, it's an educated guess.

I'm assuming that my guess of "charm school" for the finishing school clue in Cool Rhymes would be acceptable.

I thought of Liz Taylor but went with Katharine Hepburn because (1) she has the most acting nominations after Streep and (2) she only made 4 films in that time span, presumably because she was getting on, and Liz was in her prime in the 60s.

TS: drop (curtain), golden rule, Ireland, rive gauche, extemporaneous and DD: James I

I'm assuming "The Origin of Species" would have been accepted

"For whom the bell tolls" would have taken a minute or so to come to me

ghoul was difficult - didn't know the origin or the second meaning as someone who takes pleasure in tragedy

"I"slands - I get they were going for a link with the Donne / No Man categories, but "I"slands having nothing to do with Islands, well that's just confusing and I hesitated BIGLY on India

It's a miracle I got 3/5 in Drummer Sings. 0/5 sports but shoulda got tennis

This was a tough get agonized over it. Quickly excluded Hayworth too early, Monroe too dead, Grace Kelly gone to Monaco. Thinking about Taylor and the two (unrelated) Hepburns, and "The Lion In Winter" pops into me cranium. So, a WAG; I knew she had been ill around the filming of it so it seemed to fit. I haven't memorized the nominees of every Academy Awards, LOL!

41r; LT: Bali; Golden Rule (!really?!); Wicklow > Ireland; Rive GAUCHE; Never send for "whom the bell tolls" for it tolls for thee. Ran astronomy cat, great clues, such fun!
VY Canis Majoris now asked twice... ! :o Get on MDD; Paine: The American CRISIS. Grats on third win to Lisa, well played by all! :)

Just the same reason so many people misspell Barbra Streisand's first name: it's an atypical spelling. Post corrected.

Interesting factoid: KH (Lion In Winter) and BS (Funny Girl) tied for best actress for 1968. I've never heard of that happening before or since.

I remember sometime back Dr.J mentioning about her husband's audition. Pleasantly surprised to see Doug on the show. Although it didn't work out for him.
Instaget on FJ. My limited knowledge helped here... I read the clue hinting as - who won most best actresses.

Audrey Hepburn was my first instinct from the time period, but then I considered Katharine, thinking that it may have been someone who was near the end of their career. I ended up picking the wrong Hepburn.
