CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Hannah Spector is a stay-at-home mom from Van Nuys, California. Hannah, in order to try and keep my brain alive, I do "crossword puzzles for dummies".

Hannah: Okay. [Laughs]

Alex: Real dummies. But you do the New York Times crossword puzzle.

Hannah: Yes.

Alex: And you've been doing it since you were how old?

Hannah: Um, since I was in high school, so probably about 14.

Alex: Wow. Um--now, it gets more difficult...

Hannah: Yes.

Alex: As it progresses through the week, right?

Hannah: Through Saturday, yeah.

Alex: And on a Monday you knock it off in about 12--

Hannah: 2 minutes.

Alex: Oh.

Hannah: Yeah. Sorry.

Alex: I used to like you.

Hannah: I'm sorry.

[Laughter]

Alex: Sharla Zwirek from Medway, Massachusetts, taught English for three years... where?

Sharla: In Barcelona, Spain.

Alex: Ahh. Was it difficult with the thh... the lisping?

Sharla: The Castilian. Well, you get used to it, just like any accent.

Alex: Uh-huh.

Sharla: You, um--that's the way they speak there, so that's the way you--you learn how to speak. I was still learning how to speak Spanish, so everything was difficult.

Alex: What do Spaniards in Spain find most difficult about learning English?

Sharla: The grammar, the verbs...

Alex: Yeah.

Sharla: The spelling.

Alex: And--and the spelling. Yeah, I was about to say.

Sharla: Mm-hmm.

Alex: All right.

Alex: John Erler. For two days in a row now we've introduced you as a movie mocker. What does that mean? Is it true you go to the movie theater and you sit there with two of your pals and you make fun of whatever's on screen?

John: That is correct, Alex.

Alex: Out loud?

John: We--we're on microphone, Alex. Live, in a movie theater that serves alcohol, uh, and we have a lot of fun.

Alex: Whoa. You have taken it to a whole new level. Alcohol, too, huh?

John: It's there.

Alex: I like your version.

[Laughter]

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Sharla found the Daily Double on the 28th clue. John had $6,600, Sharla had $1,200, and Hannah was at $2,800. Sharla wagered $800.

HORSETORY $800: All breeds of domestic horse are a single species, scientifically this genus caballus

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
E BEFORE I $400: You "take" it to become a nun
(Sharla: What are vows?)

SHIP OUT $200: On February 15, 1898 the USS Maine mysteriously sank in this city's harbor

SHAPE UP! $1000: Regular exercise boosts HDL, high-density this ("good" cholesterol), while decreasing triglycerides

FROM JOCK TO POLITICIAN $1000: Ken Dryden won 6 championships in his 8 seasons with this team & then won election to Canada's Parliament
(Alex: He was the all-star goalie for [*], the Habs)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
John: $6,600
Hannah: $4,800
Sharla: $2,000

Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $8,000

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
John snagged the next Daily Double on the 5th clue. John had $8,200, Sharla had $2,000, and Hannah was at $5,600. John wagered $2,200.

IT'S A NOUN! IT'S A VERB! $1200: A medieval rank just below knight, or a verb meaning "to escort"
(John: What is chaperone?)

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was John who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 12th clue. John had $10,400, Sharla had $2,400, and Hannah was at $6,400. John wagered $2,200.

MARCH-ING $2000: On March 2, 1836 it declared its independence from Mexico
(Alex: The Republic of [*] is right. Ah-ha! Welcome home!)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
IT'S A NOUN! IT'S A VERB! $2000: Dry plant material that encloses grain; as a verb, it means to tease
(Alex: And that word is [*].)

IN THE STATE CAPITAL $1600: The monument to the Battle of Midway
(John: What is Hawaii?)
(Sharla: What is Honolulu?)

CELEBRITIES' FAVORITE BOOKS $1600: (Hi, I'm Isaac Mizrahi.) I loved Colm Toibin's "The Master", a fictionalized study of the interior life of this "Daisy Miller" author
(Alex: Daisy Miller? [*].)

GADGETS GALORE $800: This system helps recover your stolen car & now, with absolute software, can help recover a stolen laptop

(Sharla: What is the Swiss Army? [laughs])
(John: What is the Sharper Image?)

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Hannah: $16,000
John: $14,600
Sharla: $1,200

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
'70s BLOCKBUSTERS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
Hannah: Wager $13,201 to cover John, but no more than $13,599 so as not to fall behind Sharla's doubled score. If you're a fan of shoretegic wagering, you might risk $10,801.
John: Since you're within 4/5ths of Hannah's score, you should wager between $2,801 (venusian) and $11,800 (martian), beating Hannah's maximum safe bet of the difference between your scores.
Sharla: Too bad for you, Sharla, your score is less than Hannah's score minus John's score. Unless they both commit an egregious wagering error, you've no hope of moving into first place. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
A direction in this film: "Start with the tone... up a full tone. Down a major third. Now drop an octave. Up a perfect fifth"

FINAL SCORES
Sharla: $1,200 - $200 = $1,000 (What is Five Easy Pieces?) (3rd place: $1,000)
John: $14,600 + $12,199 = $26,799 (What is Close Encounters of the Third Kind) (2nd place: $2,000)
Hannah: $16,000 + $13,201 = $29,201 (What is Close Encounters of the Third Kind?) (New champion: $29,201)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $10,600

GAME DYNAMICS

I believe something happened today that is pretty rare.
Spoiler
Charla finished DJ in the red and was not going to be back for FJ. However when they returned from the break, she was still there because they had credited her with a correct response from an earlier clue which gave her a positive total. Of course it's common for such corrections to be made between DJ and FJ, but I believe it's pretty rare for it to make a difference between somebody being in the red and not.

Yay Hannah!

Thankfully, FJ was an instaget, so I avoid the 0-fer.

But really, none of you knew Havana?

Is that the one day champ carousel I hear? Too bad, I was hoping we'd get at least one trollface out of him.

6 months ago, I would've missed this FJ, since I'd never seen the movie, and even if I had sounded out the 'direction', it wouldn't have meant anything to me. Now, instaget before Alex finished reading the clue. A decent end to a miserable week FJ-wise.

Yeah, that was a shocker.

I missed the FJ. Haven't seen that movie since 1977. Still, I should have remembered. I agree that Havana was a surprising triple stumper. Sharla seemed like she was in a bad mood. Is movie mocker a paid job? Is the recession that bad?

I'm embarrassed to admit I don't even remember what the clue was for Havana. I'm not watching til later but my parents saw it already and my dad is mighty pissed that I didn't get Victorinox. And that they accepted the non-Coleman tent answers. (That was the first time during taping that day I had no idea why they'd stopped for judges' decision- I couldn't think of what answer they were reviewing, but did really hope it meant Sharla could come back for FJ!.)

It was basically, "The USS Maine was sunk in this city's harbor."

I'm leaving for Italy next Thursday & I did some early packing. One item was a money belt which is from Victorinox. I agree that the tent clue should have stood.

Congrats Hannah! I used to do the ny Times puzzle later in the week; I just do Sundays now.

Went straight to Jaws and didn't second guess myself, but a) I never give myself enough time to think through my answers playing off the boards, and b) I haven't seen Close Encounters (hey, I was born the next year, but it's on my to-watch-someday list...)

Tough break there for John. Had they initially ruled his response of "REI" to be correct, he would have picked up $1600 and taken the lead by $600 with the one $2000 clue remaining. He answered incorrectly on that last clue, but from his tone of voice it seemed to be a guess...and one he very likely would not have made trying to protect his small lead. If it played out like that, his correct response in FJ would have meant a payday of $32001+.

One clue in the ship category asked what world capital the Maine was sunk near. For some reason Manila popped immediately into my head, but I was pretty sure that was about half a world away from wherever the correct answer was going to be. I'm sure I meant to think of Havana...both 6 letters...both end in a...yeah, that's about all I got.

Hopefully your dad realized that the additional $3200 that both John and Sharla were credited for ended up earning you an extra $6,400 at the end of the game, assuming that you would have still bet to shut out John by a dollar had the scores not changed. In fact, had the FJ clue been a triple stumper, you would have won the game, likely because of those reversals, since John bet to make sure he stayed ahead of Sharla on a miss, instead of betting to stay ahead of you (Hannah) if you both missed. Had all three players missed, the scores would have been Hannah $2,799...John $2,401...Sharla $1,000.

I said food processor instead of blender for the Magic Bullet, and from what I can find I'm pretty sure that should have been accepted as well. According to amazon, who sells the Magic Bullet, it replaces a food processor, blender, and coffee grinder! Magic indeed.

I was so happy to see a clue referencing Brigham Young's "This is the Place", after I scoured the Archive to see how many different references had been made in the past to this famous quote after it was used in a clue on the February 22nd game. In that game, the speaker of the quote was asked for, while in this game Salt Lake City was the correct response.

This is starting to get scary. First Patrick made his demonstrative victory celebration the day after discussion on this board about what a ""Black Hat" Jeopardy! champion might be like. Then tonight, John gave quite the unique pronunciation of the final word in Earth, Wind, and Fire, after the discussion of Monday's show had meandered into whether or not fire was a one or two syllable word.

Who declared independence from Mexico for $2,000? Really? That entire March category seemed ridiculously easy, although at least it didn't totally spoil any of the question in my March TD. (Entries still being accepted!!! viewtopic.php?f=1&t=580)

Congratulations to Hannah on an excellent performance, an impressive victory, and a very nice payday as well. It was like seeing someone I knew on the show tonight after seeing your picture in your avatar over the past several days.
