Very interesting that Ani (and everyone else) avoided the baseball category until the end and then came up with sabermetrics for $2,000!

Re: Tuesday, April 18, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I got to Periscope indirectly after trying to figure a name for those satellite dish-y things on ships. No familiar objects came to mind (I didn't think about Crow's nest and would have considered Semaphore too obscure) and somehow I tribbled over to Submarines and Periscopes. Once there, no more wavering. This makes up for that damn college city in Georgia that shares the name of the school!
Haven't seen anyone pick up Moliere yet. I thought Jamie was so strong on that category, and I snagged the last clue after whiffing on the first four.
I expected Gehrig's number 4 to be a TS. But for Kimberley to guess the Commerce Comet (our obscure nickname for Mantle hereabouts)? FWIW, it is the appropriate guess for a Yankee icon after Ruth. But the Mick is from my parts and I've played the same ball field where he hit one into the River at about 500 feet. It's hard to imagine when you see the distance.

Coryat: $34,000
45 R/1 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: grog, Pat Summitt, Fort Wayne, San Diego, Grand Junction (DD), Lou Gehrig
The wife got FJ!, but it never came to me. I considered sonar and the crow's nest before settling on the beacon.
Someday I will remember Pere Lachaise.
IN THE NEWS $400: Donald Trump's inaugural address declared, "From this day forward, it's going to be only" this 2-word slogan

I was half expecting something from Trump in there, as we've yet to see a J! clue about his presidency to the best of my knowledge. (I know, my fellow liberals, it's tempting, but no politically-charged barbs in response here.)

For bird under glass, I knew it began with "p", but ended up saying pigeon just to have an answer.
LT: grog, Cleveland, Lou Gehrig (despite not being a baseball fan), Fort Wayne.
Put down semaphore for FJ, felt pretty confident, never considered submarines at all

I suspect the Fort Wayne TS was one of those deals where they had an edit and the other two players were not allowed to ring in for the easy rebound.cthulhu wrote: LT: grog, Cleveland, Lou Gehrig (despite not being a baseball fan), Fort Wayne.
I don't recall Cleveland not being picked up after Ani negged but if so, this could also have been 'one of those deals'.

I'm not sure it's widely known inside CA... Admittedly, I was thinking it pretty hard but I wasn't pulling the trigger that far down.
Untappd caused me to chuckle; I stop by the brewery first and they've added an Untappd ticker to the beer menu (Username drank this!).
For FJ, it was either periscope or conning tower and I know conning towers are still made so...
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Easy FJ. Was I the only one who heard weird laughter when the Con Air clue came up? I was excited to hear the champ's story about a "polar" plunge until he said it was in Chicago. I did one in Antarctica & it was rather cold! I've been to Pere La Chaise and it's a rare cemetery worth visiting.

I knew FJ about halfway through the music, but I could pull the word 'periscope' in time. I wrote down "peerage" on my paper, but I knew that wasn't the right word. Second game in a row where there was a clue for which I knew the answer but didn't actually know the answer.

I heard normal laughter. Maybe you should check your speakers.
I really liked that FJ. I think "mast" actually helped me more than "photonics." It made me think of a long vertical object being raised, which together with "Navy" and "photonics" helped me bring up periscope.

I wish I'd thought that way -- instead, mast made me think of, well, masts. I think if I'd ever thought of a submarine, I might have realized what "photo-" was doing there, but that just didn't happen.seaborgium wrote: ↑Wed Apr 19, 2017 2:28 am I really liked that FJ. If the "p" was in the clue, "ptarmigan" would have been a much funnier wrong answer. Well, "funnier".
For the Sinatra clue, all I knew was that it wasn't My Way.
I got Jimmy Carter almost entirely from Alex's impression. He didn't sound like Dracula or anything!
So... has anyone else been saying "Hello, Newland." every time Jamie is introduced?

A number of negs this game by all three contestants that can simply be described as bad guesses. Also, I understand Jamie felt burned by his first DD, but the second one, on a second-row clue in a typically easier category, called for more.
Luckily for him, the lone solve on FJ was the one player out of reach.
To my utter shock, I swept the baseball category. I don't know anything about baseball!
LT: grog, Pat Summitt, Fort Wayne, Grand Junction, Moliere, Lou Gehrig
FJ: My struggles continue. Went with searchlight, as did the champion. Judging by the name, it obviously had to do with sight. "Periscope" didn't come to mind.

I am so, SO glad that I wasn't the only one here to say crow's nest for FJ...I kept thinking to myself "That seriously can't be it...that is not a 'piece of equipment'...", but nothing else could come to mind in those thirty seconds. At least the actual answer gave me a brilliant idea for the movie to watch later in the evening... (Well, I like it anyway. )
Ran Drinks For Everyone (including the grog LT) and State The City (including the Cleveland, Fort Wayne, and San Diego LT), and almost ran Power Hitters (it's a testament to how much I can't stand Twitter that I couldn't remember their CEO/Jack Dorsey to save my life) and Dug Out (got hungover from Beersheba). Also got the Dwight D. Eisenhower and Oprah DDs.
