I learned french in high school, but have picked up a bit of spanish along the way. Initially, I thought nombre was spanish for number, but then I remembered that last week I called a company for technical support, and the recording said "prima numero dos,"

Did anybody guess Rio Bravo?
I don't speak Spanish but got about as far as "What is the name of the thing, in Spanish, bordering Mexico on the North."
The Spanish name part made me think of the Rio Bravo and Rio Grande distinction. I later realized that "pais" is obviously not the Spanish word for river.

Ah, the beauty of a 6(4)-5(4) victory. Much obliged to my opponent giving me 3 for Liszt.

I'd like to thank last week's Brain of Britain for getting me Mrs. Dalloway's first name.

I also gave 3 to someone who was 9/106 in classical music. Well, now he's 10/107. I got it right for 2, but wasn't certain. I gave him 1 on C&L, since he had a good TV score and he misses it.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 1:46 am Ah, the beauty of a 6(4)-5(4) victory. Wound up with a 5(4)-5(3) tie. Damn defense.

Hungarian piano virtuoso? I thought that that was Pavlovian for Liszt. Gave my opponent a 1 on it, but he missed it. I had bad negs on MAOI and Clarissa (I said Clarisse). Ouch!

I know Liszt is Hungarian, but for some reason the only "Hungarian" musician I could think of yesterday was Dvorak. Forget the fact that Dvorak is actually Czech.

Whatever the hockey equivalent of a hail Mary in hockey may be, I completed one yesterday with my guess of penalties. (Unfortunately, it was only for 1 point.) I was more tickled with that than earning 3 for Liszt.

I was so proud of myself on my WAG for the hockey question; the only one of the players listed I had ever heard of was McSorley (and I may be confusing him with the setting for the "Murder, She Wrote" episode called "A Killing In Vegas", which was set in the fictional McSorley Casino) and since I don't follow hockey and didn't have a clue, I guessed something really bizarre, which ended up being correct. Unfortunately, it was not enough to pull out a win, and I suffered a 1(2)-5(3) loss, dropping me to 2-3-2 on the season.

I've never read a letter of Woolf, but since I knew Mrs. Dalloway's first name, I figured it must be relatively common knowledge. Guess not. My usually spot-on DE instincts are way, way off this season.

Re: Learned League 73 - Official Thread
I thought that there were some very easy questions on Monday's game. I even wondered if there was a guest writer. Too easy as it turned out--I lost 6(4)-7(5) to a previously winless player. Missed the science and math questions. I actually guessed on Island Records. I knew that it had been U-2's label when they did "The Joshua Tree" 30 years ago and it seemed a logical answer to the clue.
Yesterday, I was back to my winning ways. I had a shutout (I am in D League after all), so the fact that I got a 3 for Liszt (on an educated guess) was more personally satisfying than dispositive. Stupidly answered "MOI" instead of "MAOI" though, missing a chance at an uncommon correct answer on a science question for me. Fortunately it did not matter.

No clue on Clarissa. Said Becky (for Becky Thatcher from Vanity Fair) but it turns out that novel is from the 1840s, not 1740s (and probably wasn't epistolary nor overly long, but I had nothin).
Today I face my nemesis: 5 losses and 1 win against... Plus he has a silly addendum to his LLama name. I beat him last time with a 6-pack, let's see if that can continue.
It turns out almost everyone in our rundle faces Me then PrussC in sequence. This is the second season this has happened. I almost feel like we should be inviting them over to stay in the guest bedroom at our house.

McSorley was involved in an in-game incident in 2000 where he whacked opposing enforcer Donald Brashear in the head with his stick and was convicted of assault with a weapon for it. The trial got a lot of coverage in sports media at the time.SBurrus wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 10:33 am I was so proud of myself on my WAG for the hockey question; the only one of the players listed I had ever heard of was McSorley (and I may be confusing him with the setting for the "Murder, She Wrote" episode called "A Killing In Vegas", which was set in the fictional McSorley Casino) and since I don't follow hockey and didn't have a clue, I guessed something really bizarre, which ended up being correct. I played a lot of fantasy hockey in college, and I always tried to pick up Tie Domi because you knew he was usually good for some PIMs.

The other part of that question actually threw me off a little. I'd never heard of another novel called Clarissa, but I was sure enough that Mrs. Dalloway's first name was Clarissa that I stuck with it.
...and I feel like there's some joke here using "Clarissa explains it all," but I can't think of one at the moment.

There has never been an easier LL question for me. I could sort those goons by PIMs acquired. McSorley is human garbage. Tiger Williams used to be our small town's floor hockey league sponsor, and he'd come up to Haida Gwaii once a year to play a game with us when he was still active with the Vancouver Canucks alumni. He'd set us each up for a tap in goal and then do his stick riding thing (pretending it was a horse and riding it to centre 'ice') before he left. One thing that consistently amazes me about borderline NHLers (Tiger wouldn't sniff the NHL today) is how much better they are than the average person at hockey. It's incredible.teapot37 wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 11:23 amMcSorley was involved in an in-game incident in 2000 where he whacked opposing enforcer Donald Brashear in the head with his stick and was convicted of assault with a weapon for it. The only thing that made me pause for a second and a half on the hockey question was that Dave Schultz wasn't one of the players listed.

You had company on that one. It probably would have helped to know Spanish better. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 11:54 am Yesterday was my day to overthink the questions. I thought the Spanish one was asking for the number of U.S. states so I answered "cinquante."
I had lunch next to Lake Trasimene a few weeks ago (shown below with the lovely Mrs. Alietr), which is where one of Hannibal's greatest victories occurred. I read up on the battle and Hannibal as a result, so that made this one easy.
Yeah, that name is annoying as hell.

As someone else pointed out to me "cinquante" is French for 50, not Spanish, so I was doubly wrong.alietr wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2017 3:05 pmYou had company on that one.
