Man...this game took a rough start for Susan and Alyssa. Rich himself didn't fare as well as expected. Normally, in situations where the first round ends, a player usually should have more than $5,000 in total by the end. By the time the interview break was finished, all of them went down more on their score.

-$1,200 - 2,000 = -$3,200
$600 - 1,000 = -$400
$3,400 - 1,200 = $2,200

Did Alex really have to go with the "It helps a lot if you start at the top of the category" cliche? We heard something like that two years ago...with the Nikki/Damien/Julie game. The "You might want to start at the top, the easier clues." cliche.

It blows my mind that the current champ who dethroned 5-time champ Jon Eisenman got really far in the red. $3,600 in negs in the first round?! My big question is...how did she even become champ when she did this bad in the first round?! Does this situation seem familiar? The Erin/Sophie/David game 5 years ago? Erin was just like that, where she had $3,600 in negs in the first round as well. Worse than that, Erin had dug her hole much deeper at -$4,600. It's pretty impeccable that she even got out of the hole to stay around for FJ!, like what Category 13 said, this game was all futile for Susan.

All I can say is...SO MANY BAD NEGS!!! X_X
Jeopardy! is like History. It's a mixed bag of categories that try to test your knowledge to see if you know or can recall answers that seem familiar to the viewer.

This was a train wreck, but not as bad as Barbara's game a few weeks ago. To be fair, there were some clues in the first round that had me standing and staring, but then I got my groove back

Rich knows a lot, but there's a lot Rich doesn't know. Discuss

MDD: Cleveland, Dylan Thomas and LT: serpentine, Gosling/Stone (really??), Sam Smith, Tagalog (though I horribly mispronounced it)

'shadow' or 'dark' acceptable for word on Belize flag "umbra"?

I wrote a recent TD on the Academy Awards, had a question on Oscar winning songs, but missed "Raindrops" tonight and "It's hard out here for a pimp" a few weeks ago, and both were in my quiz :/

Rich towered over the other two - I thought the platforms were raised to equalize contestant height?

I thought I had a rare sports get with Green Bay Packers --> Aaron Rodgers but NO!!! FML :(

Loved Rich's pocket square game! So many points in that fold!

I think it's fair to say if they're missing as many as they were in this game.

It also helps if you've seen the shows mentioned in the clues.

The 1-2 punch of What is who are you? then what is who's that girl was awesome? I wanted rich to follow with what is who am I?

My memory may be fading...but at the commercial break, I said out loud "I don''t think I've ever seen a returning champion that far in the red." I had forgotten the game you mentioned.

The reason they were missing the clues wasn't because they didn't know what the categories were looking for.

This kind of clue should be great for a Kids Week challenge. Sure, some ToC-challenged and easy clues are fine, but I wanna see a tough challenge for the players.
I think you're overestimating the skill of the average viewer. J! is entertainment first, trivia second.

IIRC, the clue mentioned 'Greek for hidden', which is something like kryptos. Hence cryptic, cryptography ("hidden writing"), and also the element krypton.
And by something like, it basically is 'Kryptos'. I KNOW I've mentioned this before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kryptos

Umbra better count for shadow; the motto does explicitly say it translates to 'shade' but umbra itself is 'shadow' as best as I can tell.
Dark I wouldn't count on being accepted.

I think the transcriber can safely assume that in the quetzal clue, it ended with "Q"" (as opposed to CUE"), especially given the quail neg.

Instaget FJ.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I was laughing at not knowing that "Welsh" and "poet" equals Dylan Thomas, but then I had no idea on final jeopardy. Kudos to the champ.

"You pays your money"? What???
My English teacher in 11th grade used this phrase a lot, but I could never quite figure out what it meant. She was a sweet lady and a good teacher, but a little strange.

As poorly as they were playing, he absolutely did.

I thought malleable was an acceptable response. Do they enforce a tougher acceptance criteria for bottom row clues?

I missed B. J. Thomas and Dylan Thomas but I've learned both of those before.

I'm curious to see how Rich does tomorrow. He got a lot right but missed some relatively easy ones too. If he had first day jitters and gets over them he could be a strong contender.

Malleable was not acceptable. Malleability and ductility do tend to come together but they refer to different properties. Something ductile can be drawn into wires, whereas something malleable can be hammered into thin sheets.

Anyone else thought it was odd for a forensic person to not know about cryptic word? Maybe she is not the kind of forensic that I'm thinking about.

Alex had to stop the game and lecture about how to play? That's bad.

Lots of NHO.. that Oscar category was tough for me.

I didn't pay much attention at FJ..looked at zygo.. something and thought of cheek bones. Not good.

I confess I don't quite grasp the metaphorical implications of 'In the shade I flourish." Translated the other way, "In the shadow I flourish" seems sinister...

I saw the last part of the Home Run Derby tonight. A couple of players made 58% of their swings go over the fence. Then I watched this episode and I saw more misses than I did in the HRD!

Instaget FJ, I can't think of a possible alternative answer the way the FJ clue was written -although someone posted "freckles" as an option. This from the same writers that threw Pat Nixon into a clue lately? The only common terminology I can think of now is "lantern jaw", which might also be an asset?.

I like saying "you gots to pay your money", but I finish it with "and then you takes your chances". I didn't know it was supposed to be "takes your choice", but there may be two expressions.

Susan got a little payday and she had some fun and seems like a nice lady. Good for her. I thought Rich bet the DD's sensibly, he couldn't risk a big loss against these two players to let them back in the game.

Someone who pays rates, but that's not important right now.

I see the term often in news articles involving public utilities; California, for one, has a government department called the Office of Ratepayer Advocates.

I was getting irritated that they were avoiding that category and with the slow play, we might not see all the clues (same with the Presidential category in the first round). It turned out to be a dissapointment for me, with all the post 2000 clues. I was expecting a clue about Sissy Spacek or Jennifer Warnes, though not sure if these examples actually won the Oscar. I suspect the only reason they selected B.J. Thomas from nearly 50 years ago was because Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head was a huge number 1 hit back then.

29 right.

Presidential (3), Adjectives (2), Sense (1), Greens (3), Learning (1), "Pay" (2)
Women (2), America (3), Song (3), Fascism (4), "L" (1), Welsh (4)

Lach Trash: Tagalog, Samantha Who?, Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone; Daily Double: Grover Cleveland, Dylan Thomas

I saw "attractive" and immediately thought of high cheekbones; I also thought of dimples but didn't change my answer.
