Sloane Stephens (unseeded in the tournament, 83rd in the world at the time) wins the US Open after defeating Venus Williams and Madison Keys.
The final featured two African-American women not named "Williams".

Former world middleweight champion boxer Jake La Motta died at the age of 95. La Motta, who fought Sugar Ray Robinson six times (Robinson won five of the six fights) was made famous to younger generations with the release of Raging Bull (1980). Robert Di Niro won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of La Motta in that film.

Of local interest (to me, anyway) is that several of La Motta's most memorable fights took place at iconic Detroit sports venues: Olympia Stadium and Briggs (later Tiger) Stadium.

She came up on Jeopardy on June 19 of this year (Single Jeopardy; Category: "Names You Should Know"; $600). The clue was, From this company Liliane Bettencourt can say, "Because I'm worth it" [$36 billion]". The answer was "What is L’Oreal?"

Nobel season again!
The 2017 prize in physiology or medicine goes to US scientists Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael Young for their work studying the human body's circadian rhythm, i.e., clock.

Nobel week day 2, Physics.
Gravitational waves! (Finally...)
Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish will share the nine million kronor (£831,000) prize.

Interesting side trivia that probably won't be a clue, Kip Thorne was a consultant for Nolan's Interstellar and wrote a book behind the science of it.

Chemistry!
Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson will share the nine million kronor (£831,000) prize.

They developed a technique called cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), which simplifies the process for looking at the machinery of life.

The process makes it possible for life's molecular building blocks to be captured mid-movement and allowed scientists to visualise processes that had never before been seen.
In an interesting bit of synergy:
Cryo-electron microscopy has been used to capture images of ... the molecular structures governing circadian rhythm - the subject of this year's medicine and physiology Nobel.
