I just saw a Braque painting today in a short rabbit hole, so he was fresh on my mind as a Cubist!

Cubism is a small enough field that I was willing to take an educated guess. The French name meant that Max Ernst was unlikely to be the culprit, and I took a chance that Picasso wasn't 15-point material. That left me with Braque.

Braque... dang. I can never remember that name for some reason. I always want to say "Jacques Brel," who I know was a singer, not a painter. Sigh.

Oh man, I wanted to say Raphael so badly, but I just couldn't pull the trigger.
On the other hand, I came up with Art Shell for the Browns owner, and nearly used it. But my other self was screaming that he was a coach - could even easily picture him if that was the case. In the end I listened to the inner voices, and I'm glad that I did.

First of all, I want to thank Carmen Sandiego for teaching me Port Moresby.
I'm not certain, but I think Monday represented my first daily perfect score in a ToC. (The ToC has always been my SHC kryptonite.) And then I open up Tuesday and there's a film category! Sadly, the questions in this category were a bit too easy, and so I gained no real advantage there. *sigh*

I think day 2 was my first-ever daily perfect score in a TOC play-along thread. Why couldn't more of my wheelhouse categories like world capitals have come up during the regular season?cinemaniax7 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 14, 2017 10:48 pm First of all, I want to thank Carmen Sandiego for teaching me Port Moresby.

Man...that anagrams category. I spent so much time thinking about it.

Ditto. I was so pleased with myself for getting the paean/apnea pair (went down a bad path at first with hymn) but that 15-pointer? Congrats on getting it. I was stuck thinking of spotted as in dappled and getting nowhere fast.

Esne (and it was either that or serf) was a very popular crossword answer in the Weng and Maleska days. Shortz seems to have banished it.

Re: Summer Hiatus Challenge 2017--TOC instant replay thread (SPOILERS)
I too was stuck with some kind of dappled/pied/dotted dead end, but "Anglo-Saxon laborer" is crossword gospel for esne, so I tried again from that end and finally my brain clicked over to the correct definition of spotted. A very well-written clue for a 15-pointer, IMO.
The tools seemed mostly pretty easy, except for figuring out the 4-pointer. I kept picturing some kind of caulk gun that would mix the three different substances like an epoxy or something. I can't begin to understand how or why my brain got to level, but when it did, the tube thing finally made perfect sense.

I just realized I put Allen key instead of Allen wrench, so now I get to wait nervously to see if that will earn me credit.

That one got the best of me. In all the years of using them, I've only ever heard them referred to as (spirit) levels, never as torpedo levels. Live and learn...nlw44 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 15, 2017 1:22 pm

Re: Summer Hiatus Challenge 2017--TOC instant replay thread (SPOILERS)
One of my summer jobs in high school was in a deli/grocery store. One day we were doing some maintenance work on a cooler, and the boss told me to go across the street to the hardware store and get an Allen wrench set. I said I didn't know what an Allen wrench was, so he sent someone else. The other guy comes back from the store with a hex key set, and I said to the boss "well, why didn't you say so?" Until that day I had only ever heard them called hex keys.

For those of us of a certain age, naming the original three Charlie's Angels was a gift at 15.
