CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: I'm a little worried about Bonnie Leih, from Plumas Lake, California. You met your husband in ninth grade. Was he a slow learner or something?
Bonnie: No, we were both in the ninth grade at the time.
Alex: Oh, I see.
Bonnie: Yeah, we were in a ROTC class together. And we liked each other from the beginning, but he dated my best friend first. They're both here, Lilith and Sandy. And after they dated for a while, they just became good friends, and I asked him out to the junior prom.
Alex: You asked him out?
Bonnie: I asked him out. 'Cause neither one of us had the guts before then.
Alex: All right. Well, it worked out well.
Bonnie: Yep. 19 years we just celebrated.
Alex: Good for you. Congratulations.
Alex: Veryl Gambino is a prosecutor from Illinois. And Richard Gere got to see you in action because he was shooting at the time there in Illinois, right?
Veryl: He did, Alex. He was filming Primal Fear, which was set in the fictional Cane County or Kindle County, and he was watching different trials around the building, and he came to my first jury trial. And I didn't know he was in the gallery until I stood up to address the jury, and I saw him out of the corner of my eye. So I was nervous to start with, and I was more nervous when I saw him.
Alex: The expression is, "I was freaked out by seeing Richard Gere."
Veryl: Yes.
Alex: Yeah, I can imagine.
Alex: Austin Rogers is our champion. He's got a lot of energy. And yet, at a rock concert, you fell asleep?
Austin: Yeah. A friend and I--let's call him "Dannifer"--he took me to a--can I say the band?
Alex: Sure.
Austin: Korn/Disturbed concert. And it's pretty much the most tragically boring music on Earth. A guy couple rows back goes, "Yo, your friend is all passed out." And he's like, "No, he just hates this music. He went to sleep to it."
Alex: I see.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Veryl found the Daily Double on the 19th clue. Austin had $3,800, Veryl had $1,800, and Bonnie was at $800. Veryl made it a True Daily Double, wagering $1,800.
TRAVEL & TOURISM $600: This Alabama city's National Voting Rights Museum includes exhibits on Martin Luther King & Jesse Jackson
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
WELCOME BACK, U.S. SUPREME COURT $600: Thank her, the first female dean of Harvard Law, for getting a froyo machine installed in the cafeteria
(Bonnie: Who is Sotomayor?)
IRREGULAR VERBS $400: When summoned, Lurch of "The Addams Family" would use this 2-word phrase including an irregular verb
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Veryl: $6,600
Austin: $5,000
Bonnie: $2,800

Re: Monday, October 2, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I swear theFJguy post is not a joke.
The S34 promo had Alex saying, "I am in awe."
I am with the host. The wager for DD3 was a stunner.
What did not impress me? The TS for Lurch's 2-word phrase. Those three could join all of the LLs that did not know Charlie Brown's rocks.
Really, that FJ! clue went 1/3? I guess it was not as ridiculous for regular play as I thought the instant it was revealed.
Since this game will have 1-day totals up for discussion I link the work by Keith Williams: http://thefinalwager.com/2015/04/02/jeo ... gh-scores/

No kidding. Not just "Iowa artist", but any clue where you hear about an American artist depicting farm life, how is "American Gothic" not the first painting that jumps to mind?MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2017 4:33 pm Really, that FJ! clue went 1/3? How easy was this? If I have the question written down before the music starts, you know it is easy.
A really big win for Austin. Aided, of course by huge wagers and easy DDs.
But definitely points off for missing Lurch's catchphrase.

Re: Monday, October 2, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I was going between Grant Wood and Grandma Moses. The coin toss went the right way, but "farm life" covers a few well known artists. I also considered Thomas Hart Benton - turns out he was born in Missouri. Ironically, the Art Institute of Chicago - where American Gothic hangs - is the reason I considered some other folks because, as one might imagine, Midwestern art is well represented there.zerobandwidth wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2017 4:35 pmNo kidding. I guess it was not as ridiculous for regular play as I thought the instant it was revealed.

I was going back and forth between Grant Wood and Jackson Pollock. I guessed wrong.

Is Spangenberg's total still the record, being set before The Great Doubling?MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2017 5:21 pm 5-day winning totals:

Austin's performance is definitely in rare and storied company.

Both Frank and Jerome's dollar amounts were pre-doubled; the values in this list reflect their actual winnings at the time of their appearances. Austin is 4th on this list when you adjust dollar amounts accordingly.zerobandwidth wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2017 6:53 pmIs Spangenberg's total still the record, being set before The Great Doubling?MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2017 5:21 pm 5-day winning totals:

So far, our man Pasha is the only one who's even had a shot against Austin going into FJ. All the other games were lockouts. But in spite of not needing to get FJ right, Austin has yet to miss one.
Re: Monday, October 2, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Austin's $15,700 DD = balls.
I bit on the "warren" negbait, because of course I did. My only miss in the category, too.
"Oyez" was my only get in Supreme Court. I could've taken 400 guesses and not gotten the top box ever.
My head was miles beneath the "Nominated" category except for Edith Head, whom I know entirely thanks to mbclev.
Could've run musical instruments, but "oboe" eluded me.
That Caldecott clue was a strange playing.
Lach Trash: "You rang?"
No guess on FJ! The key words left my wheels completely motionless. Not even "Midwest" after the fact set anything in motion.
Johnny sounded really weak on the "promotional consideration" tag.

ABC in NY is not showing this episode until early tomorrow due to extended news coverage on Las Vegas. Don't know about other major markets. I saw this on a local CT channel.

This is my third game missed for "sun outage" I first suffered this effect last Monday watching WJLA-7 broadcast. I was highly angrified!
I fired Comcast and have been happily watching free TV over the air all summer then THIS started! Last week it lasted from 7:45 PM until 8PM!
This week started earlier at 7:30 promptly and lasted the entire half hour! Curse of J! Perfectly clear, HD PM news and sappy WOF then Bam! Nothin but freeze-frame.
Fascinating phenomenon which occurs around the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes (i?). At this time of year the sun beams Earth at such an angle as to disrupt satellite transmissions from ground stations. I am precalling it to appear on J! (Probably at a time I cannot receive it!). Supposedly will last a couple weeks... I am biting my J! notebook and cursing Comcast for their lousy customer service, else I had not missed all this J!

Geostationary satellites provide a wide variety of services — including TV and radio broadcasts, telecommunications, and for regional and remote parts of Australia, the internet (through the NBN).
The way a satellite works is that a signal comes from a source (like a television or radio station) to a "gateway station."
The gateway station — often a large antenna — then transmits that signal to a satellite, which relays the signal over an area, allowing you to receive it.
But when the Sun traverses the equator during an equinox, it also passes behind geostationary satellites — which Dr Elias Aboutanios, from the University of New South Wales' school of telecommunications, said disrupts their operation.
"Most geostationary satellite communication works in the microwave [frequency]. And the sun transmits those same frequencies," he said.
"[At the equinox] it's like you have this tiny light bulb, passing in front of a massive projector. You can't see the lightbulb. The background noise — provided by the Sun — blinds you from seeing the satellite, much like with visible light."
The corridors of my mind are plastered with 3M Post-It notes!

Coryat: $22,000
DDs: 2/3 (the two in DJ!)
FJ!: (American artist -> farm life -> American Gothic -> Grant Wood. Had it down before the music.)
Didn't run anything today. A few 4/5's however (Bunnies, What The "L", Musical Instruments).
Surprised Final today was 1/3. Would have figured Wood a practical Pavlov for "farm life American artist".

I wonder if this is the single game record for a contestant who was not winning at the end of the Jeopardy! round.

Hell I wasn't even paying attention to the final DD because I was just stunned he got the words fifteen thousand out of his mouth. Austin gained ~45K off the DD's and FJ in total.. What an incredible performance.
You guys beat me to it as I also went straight to Keith's tables to see where Austin stands on both the 5-day total and single-game winnings. I was not watching the show at the time Roger Craig was on, so to see anyone get this close to Frank's record is simply mind-boggling. Hopefully an amendment to that list is in order at some point to include our new super-champ.
Surprised as well that Final only went 1/3.. Got it in four words. Anyways.. Looking forward to see what champ can do for an encore tomorrow!

Wow, I was going to ask if there were any other major Iowa artists besides Grant Wood. Well done, boardies!
